Johnny Logan’s 1980s Eurovision Winner Gets a Synth-Pop Makeover by Keelan X

Keelan X is the project of transient Irish artist, Keelan Cunningham. Having cut his teeth as a musician in bands during the indie music height of the 90s, Keelan has transformed his creative output by tapping into his fascination of synth, electro and pop music.

2022 saw Keelan X at his most prolific with the release of singles ‘These Days’, ‘Fever’ and ‘The Other Side’. His love of classic 80s synth soundscapes ranging from Moroder to Tears For Fears, combined with a growing admiration for a modern take on the genre developed by the likes of The Weeknd, is laid bare in the woozy sonics Keelan X produces.

His latest single, What’s Another Year, perfectly combines these two influences into one expertly crafted synth-pop song. Profoundly affected by fellow countryman Johnny Logan’s 1980 Eurovision Song Contest winning entry, Keelan X was inspired to recreate the track in his own image. Commenting on the single Keelan says:

“This is a bit of a departure for me; adapting a Eurovision winning ballad into a slightly more up-tempo, modern pop track. I always loved the song (by Shay Healy) and thought it would be interesting to give it a synth-pop makeover. It’s my favourite song ever put forward by Ireland to the Eurovision. It’s very musical and I just love the wistful melody line and vocal delivery by Johnny as well as the instrumental sections, beautifully crafted by Bill Whelan (of Riverdance fame).”

Working with London-based pop producer Imad Salhi, Keelan X has honoured the original incarnation of the song, whilst injecting a hazy, shimmering electro-pop veneer. The track is accompanied by a sumptuous cyber-punk/anime inspired animated video charting the journey of a young lad travelling back in time to The Hague, 1980 to meet Johnny Logan just prior to his iconic Eurovision performance.

The single will kickstart Keelan X’s 2023, which will see him release further singles throughout the year. With a multitude of press support including RTE 2Amazing RadioToday FMThe Vinyl DistrictSynthpoplover, Hot PressSunday Times, Side-Line Magazine and Electricity Club, Keelan is aiming to continue his rise at both home and abroad.

What’s Another Year is out on 10th March 2023 on all your usual streaming platforms.

Enchanting cinematic music video from CARRON for new track ‘Right Time’

CARRON are setting the stage for their immersive new single, ‘Right Time’, a gorgeous new release accompanied by a cinematic video filmed at Lough Tay, Co. Wicklow.

This enchanting new single is an attempt to sooth and reassure during a period of turmoil caused by deep loss. Emotive and wonderfully cathartic, ‘Right Time’ is part of the healing process, giving a voice to the struggle that follows a heartbreaking moment. Steeped in haunting, ethereal vocals and sweeping instrumental tones, ‘Right Time’ is a somber yet triumphant track that showcases the power of Méabh and Mella’s vocals, giving depth to the music and channeling heartbreak and sorrow into a devastating musical piece.

This song is raw and honest in an attempt to heal the heart and soul. We use music as a powerful tool to help us cope and we write to help heal the wounds we have acquired. Producer Richey McCourt brought this song to life and it’s a bigger sound than our usual offerings, which it had to be to convey the trauma. Like ‘Lights Up’ it’s a nod towards our background performing in musicals as children.

A gorgeous release that perfectly builds on CARRON’s evocative style, ‘Right Time’ delivers a raw, honest sound that is soulful, organic, and lyrically intense.

About the band:

Sisters and multi-instrumentalists Méabh and Mella Carron formed their namesake band as a healing project during a period of extensive hospital treatment. Alongside guitarist, violinist, and co-writer Darragh McGrath, the trio have established themselves with a string of impressive releases, extensive Irish airplay, and sold-out shows at music venues across Ireland.

IMRO Live Music Venue Awards 2023 Performer Announcement

The 2023 edition of the IMRO Live Music Venue Awards takes place on Tuesday, 14th March in The Sugar Club, Dublin.

IMRO is delighted to announce live performances on the night from Negro Impacto, Bricknasty, Skinner & DJ Mona Lxsa.

The annual awards celebrate the dedication and passion of those who work in Ireland’s live music venues, providing the public with an exceptional live music experience on a weekly basis.

We have a limited number of guest list places available for this event – please email events@nullimro.ie if you would like to attend.

Negro Impacto

Issey Goold

Negro Impacto are a Dundalk duo comprising of vocalist-songwriter Chi Chi and producer, multi-instrumentalist Laurence (aka StrangeLove). The pair quickly gained attention in the Irish music scene thanks to their unique neo-soul sound, groovy sets and youthful energy. Named as part of the ‘2FM Rising’ class of 2023 and ones to watch across many outlets, the duo are in for an incredible year.

The sound of Negro Impacto is alternative neo-soul with elements of RnB, rock and funk – as heard in their self titled debut E.P. Their music has been compared to the likes of The Internet and Steve Lacy and you can hear elements of inspiration from Erykah Badu and WILLOW in Chi Chi’s dreamy vocals. In terms of production, multi-instrumentalist Laurence quotes DJ Harrison and Arthur Verocai as a definite influence on his style.

Negro Impacto’s live set is an eclectic mix of incredible musicianship, inventive live arrangements by Laurence and of course, infectious vocals and interactions by Chi Chi. 2022 saw the band’s first festival season, where they wowed audiences across stages at Electric Picnic, Forbidden Fruit, All Together Now, Another Love Story and more. Negro Impacto were also selected for Ireland Music Week 2022 and have played at showcases with District Magazine, Nialler9, Mo Cultivation, Artists Against Homelessness (curated by Kojaque) and opened for a range of artists such as Denise Chaila, Aby Coulibaly and The Mary Wallopers.

Bricknasty

Rapidly becoming one of the most talked about live acts in Ireland, Bricknasty emerged from Ballymun at the beginning of 2020 as a lockdown studio project that has developed into a band taking in members from across the country – singer and guitarist Fatboy, drummer Korey Thomas, sax / keys player Louis Younge and bassist Dara Abdurahman. Featured in District Magazine’s Future of Irish music 2021 feature and described by BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders as his favourite type of jazz mixed with every other genre under the sun, they draw influence from Neo-Soul while putting their boisterous and eclectic nature on full display. From infectious energy and soulful chords to its soft, woozy vocals, the band combine R&B, hip-hop and an anarchic musical approach that stems from singer Fatboy’s roots in the Balbutcher Lane flats and exposure to a range of cultures, from traditional ballads to hip-hop, rave and 90s garage. In tandem with producer Skidmark and paired with a tight knit group of musical peers – Tebi Rex, Khakikid, Tomike, Ahmed With Love and DeCarteret – they are set on bringing their brand of sardonic, neo-soul to a broader, younger Irish audience while staying true to the classic artists that have informed their music. 2022 saw the band split their time between the studio and a series of gigs around the country, including hosting their own Bricknasty Sessions residency at the Sugar Club with a series of special guests, gigs in London and Dublin with Maverick Sabre, support on Cordae’s Irish tour and slots at Ireland Music Week, Other Voices and Cork Jazz Festival. The release of the track ‘Ina Crueler’ in September brought them to a wider audience via major Spotify playlists and media support. 2023 began with a packed show at Eurosonic festival and they will release new music via the FAMM label (home to Jorja Smith, Maverick Sabre and Enny).

Skinner

Niamh Barry

Skinner is a DIY slouch rock musician based in Dublin who writes, records and produces songs about growing up and overcoming a dirt-flecked 21st century existence.

The DNA of no wave and post-punk acts like The B52s, James Chance and the Contortions and ESG through to alt-rock touchstones Pixies and Morphine combined with a talent for grunge-nodding self-production and pockets of elevated instrumentation is oozing from Skinner’s music.

DJ Mona Lxsa

First Music Contact and Theatre Forum launch Pay and Conditions Survey of the Music and Performing Arts Industries

Collecting the evidence to advocate for positive change.

Today, 23 February 2023, First Music Contact (FMC) and Theatre Forum launch a national Pay and Conditions Survey of the Music and Performing Arts Industries. The survey will ensure an evidence-based overview of pay and conditions within these areas of the arts sector, documenting the lived experience of musicians, artists, arts workers, makers, and creative professionals. Living in a data driven society, it is fundamental to demonstrate research and analysis to ensure advocacy with impact for the sector.

“First Music Contact encourage all musicians, labels, publishers, independent promoters, all professionals working in the music industry and music sector, to have their voices heard through this survey. It is fully anonymised and is vital to the gathering of up-to-date information. We are a sector which has gone unmeasured for too long and this baseline will allow us and our colleagues and peers to make the case for increased support for our sector. The time is also ripe to feed into the Basic Income for the Arts pilot scheme and work to make sure it becomes a reality for our entire sector after the pilot concludes.” Angela Dorgan, CEO, First Music Contact

FMC and Theatre Forum, along with the AIST and other resource organisations within the sector, are working collaboratively to campaign for sustainable careers for those who work in arts and culture. If artists, musicians, and workers are to continue to make and present the art that nourishes individuals and communities across the nation, and showcase Ireland on the world stage, then fair and just conditions must be cultivated to enable professionals to make a living and support themselves and their families through their artistic work.

If artists are to have the opportunity to make the art that enriches our lives, then we must systematically collect the evidence, present the case, and take responsibility for cultivating the conditions that allow artists, musicians, and creative practitioners to support themselves through their art. Evidence from the sector is vital to support the strategic priority of investment in the arts set out in the National Development Plan 2018–2027, make the case for the roll-out of the Basic Income for the Arts pilot scheme, and maintain and increase Arts Council and Local Authority funding to enrich life in all our communities.” Anna Walsh, Director, Theatre Forum

Financial, social, and structural barriers remain an impediment for the sector in terms of the development of sustainable careers, the retention of talent, skills and experience, in particular post pandemic, and to the future of the sector, in terms of attracting high calibre entrants. Both FMC and Theatre Forum firmly believe that a general overhaul of pay and conditions is urgently required, to ensure that minimum acceptable standards, such as the national living wage, are implemented. At the very least, such improvements would form the foundations of a viable working life for musicians, music professionals, performing artists and workers, as well as the wider arts sector.

This Pay and Conditions Survey is being carried out to ensure that up to date, empirical evidence is gathered, which will then shape solutions-based advocacy. The data will be used to make the case for re-developing the sector’s employment frameworks, addressing precarity in work and lack of parity in pay.

The Pay and Conditions Survey is now open and will run until Thursday March 16. All are encouraged to have their say.

Music Industry Surveys at https://www.firstmusiccontact.com/pay-conditions-survey

Performing Arts Surveys at www.theatreforum.ie

Once the anonymised survey results have been collated and analysed, findings will be widely shared and discussed with all arts and culture sector stakeholders who wish to engage, to advocate for positive change.

Dublin Sound Lab Presents Music Current 2023 Contemporary Music Festival

Music Current offers a visual treat for all music lovers as the annual four-day festival of new music returns this April:

Dublin Sound Lab’s Music Current festival returns with a visually stunning and technically outstanding four-day festival programme showcasing some of the most fearless innovators in contemporary music. The festival will host four new concerts, a chamber opera, workshops and discussions that explore the cutting edge of new music, as it takes over Project Arts Centre from April 12 – 15.

Music Current platforms some of the most adventurous musical and visual artists including celebrated Irish artist Jaki Irvine whose new work, Re_sett_ing_s, for ensemble and VJ, will be a major draw to this year’s event. This year the festival welcomes the innovative international new music artists and ensembles Nadar Ensemble, Schallfeld Ensemble, and Natacha Diels – all of whom are performing Ireland for the first time.

Festival Director, Fergal Dowling commenting on this year’s programme says:

Music Current Festival has always focused on the experience of live music, and this year we have put together a programme that is rich in multimedia, video, interactive electronics and new performance practices. Music creation is also always central to the festival and this year we have three new works written especially for Dublin Sound Lab, three workshops focusing on music creation, and every piece in every programme is an Irish premiere. So this really is music that has to be experienced, not just heard.

Dublin Sound Lab open this year’s concert festival with their own curated programme on Wednesday (12 April). With many Irish and world premieres, including three new works written especially for this performance by Francis Heery (Ireland), Jaki Irvine (Ireland) and Alessandro Massobrio’s (Italy) new Music Current Festival commission. This seemingly eclectic programme shows the results of extended collaborations combined with video and virtuosic interaction. Three modern multimedia and electronic music “classics” for soloists form the skeleton of the programme: Simon Steen-Anderson’s (Denmark) hypnotic Study for String Instrument #3, and Johannes Kreidler’s Bow – both of which are visually witty commentaries on the concept of multimedia composition and interaction – and Martin Matalon’s (Argentina) masterfully sonorous Traces V for clarinet and computer.

Natacha Diels presents Somewhere Beautiful, her one-person show, and her very first performance in Ireland (on Thursday 13 April), staging her unique vision of musical performance as multimedia theatre. The performance is like a journey into a strange landscape occupied by sounds and images that are at once both familiar and strange, reassuring and unsettling. Diels’ work combines choreographed movement, video animation, instrumental practice, and cynical play to create worlds of curiosity and unease.

Shallfeld Ensemble (Austria) are regular guests at major international music festivals worldwide (Wien Modern, Implus, Darmstadt, Poznan, EMA). They bring their trademark innovative repertoire and performance style to Dublin and Music Current Festival for the first time with their concert Chemical Etudes (Thursday 13 April). Here they present a programme of works by long-time collaborator Marko Ciciliani, overtly referencing game culture, and integrating competitive and interactive elements from computer games into compositions and concert settings.

Cold Sweat (Kalter Schweis) – a 30-minute “micro opera” – is the first in Michael Maierhof’s (Germany) series of “home operas”. The work is intended to be performed in domestic spaces, living rooms or public places – at Music Current Festival Cold Sweat will be performed at the Library of the Contemporary Music Centre, Dublin (Friday 14 April). Currently there are four completed works in the series, each based on a movie of a different genre. Cold Sweat is based on the 1970 gangster movie of the same name directed by Terrance Young and starring Charles Bronson, James Mason and Liv Ullmann. The opera focuses on a single scene showing James Mason being shot, threatening the villain with a gun, and protecting Bronson’s wife.

Nadar Ensemble (Belgium) presents a multi-layered musical and visual discourse, with avatars as main characters set into their Doppelgänger concert. The piece by Jessie Marino sets a magic and confusing atmosphere, Michael Beil and Pierre Jodlowski create a more gloomy wonderland, full of Lynchian alienation. The programme also features the famous “mirror scene” from the Marx Brothers’s film Duck Soup The scene presents us with the most dramatic moment of selfidentification in the 1933 film. Finally, Stefan Prins leads us to the dark side of the wondrous technology.

The festival also includes three participation workshops for audiences, musicians and composers on ‘composing with synthesizers’, ‘composing with video’, and ‘composing in real-time’. A panel discussion titled ‘Beyond Pitch: Perspectives on New Music Composition Methods’ features composers from Germany, Japan, Ireland and the USA.

The discussion will consider how music making is affected by technology, social changes and the political environment. Technologists are a very important part of this community, and conversations about changing how composers think about music or how they think about the world are key to the festival too.

Music Current has a reputation for presenting music that is both fun and visionary, and this year the programme is entirely made up of Irish and world premieres, with a strong focus on video and live electronics and the experience of live music. The festival is a showcase of the “newest of the new” music from Ireland and worldwide.

A central feature of Music Current Festival is the creative collaboration of composers and performers with the presentation of new works, and Music Current regularly commissions new compositions and creates opportunities for collaborative development.

“Dublin Sound Lab is doing an important job for those in Ireland who remain passionate about music in the post-war avant-garde lineage and who rarely get the opportunity to hear such ‘difficult’ music performed… …flying the flag in Ireland over the past decade for European modernism. [Liam Cagney, Journal of Music]

Each year at Music Current Festival music audiences and the wider public are invited to engage in debates and discussions concerning how music making is affected by technology, social changes and the political environment.

In the current New Media and post-digital environment composers are increasingly using new techniques and strategies to organise sound. Here, six composers and musicians share insights into their personal working methods, compositional techniques, rationale, and the strategies they use to approach compositional problems.

This event is hosted in collaboration with the Contemporary Music Centre, Ireland’s archive and resource centre for new music. It will be moderated by CMC Director, Ferguson, which will also be recorded for the ‘amplify’ podcast.
