Other Voices is delighted to announce its return to Cork this September for another extraordinary night of live music in collaboration with University College Cork.

Taking place on Thursday 28 September, and hosted by MayKay, Other Voices and UCC will continue to celebrate the phenomenal breadth and diversity of Irish music right now. A limited number of golden tickets for the recording of the performances will be available via the Other Voices at UCC public lottery, with additional tickets also being made available through competitions in the coming weeks.

Beyond the livestreamed performances, local talent will take centre stage with the ‘Other Voices of UCC’ warm up concert taking place in The Hub from 1pm – 3pm.

Continuing its mission of celebrating what’s about to happen, the ‘UCC Amplified’ initiative will give one lucky act the opportunity to play at ‘Other Voices of UCC’ and follow in the footsteps of Dermot Kennedy, Fontaines D.C., Pillow Queens and more by performing on the Dingle Distillery Music Trail later this year at Other Voices Dingle. Foot Squeaker return with brand new single ‘Silhouette’

Springing from the ever growing market town of Gorey, Co. Wexford, Foot Squeaker began their alternative rock wayfaring in 2018. Proposing only vigorous and fervent performances, this is what audiences have been getting from day dot. Having released three singles in 2020 and then sucked into the pandemic years, they rise in 2023 with the incoming new single, ‘Silhouette’, out 01.09.23.

“Silhouette is a song about disappearing into yourself after a traumatic event, spinning in a personality vacuum with the only way out being the love and support of your special someone. Don’t become a silhouette of yourself, find out who you really are and try to overcome.” – Diarmuid Comerford

The song was recorded in Diarmuid’s studio, mixed by Daniel Fox (Gilla Band) with the mastering by Darragh Nolan aka Astakalapa.

’Silhouette’ sees Foot Squeaker finding their sound with a chorus that has already had audiences singing along at shows. “Stay in your heart” echoed through a recent hometown show in The Loch Garman Arms alongside Peer Pleasure and indie rockers Drying Weather. This song connects to a place where people can find their solace and hope.

The band have shook the walls of Fibber Magees in Dublin twice this year along with a blistering set at The Gorey Market House Festival.

Foot Squeaker plan to play across Ireland this Autumn in support of the single and head straight in to record new music in November.

Grace Day releases new EP ‘Woe Is Me!’

Grace Day grew up in Donegal and began her music career in Galway Ireland, where she attended college and played in college bands, Grace Day decided to move to Nashville on a whim, not knowing a single soul in the city. Her spontaneity pervades her music through her eccentric, often humorous lyrics, and unique indie pop sound. Her dreamy heartbreak ballad ‘Never Lonely With You’ made its way onto rotation on many radio stations across Ireland, including RTE 1 and BBC. Grace is a big fan of collaboration and when she’s not working on her own music, she’s writing with other Nashville Artists/writers.

In the lead single of her debut EP ‘Woe is me!’ Grace captures the universal struggle of parting ways while learning the art of embracing life’s transitions. Polly Barrett releases new single ‘Sapling Be’

West Cork based songwriter Polly Barrett releases her second single of 2023, the uplifting and evocative ‘Sapling Be’ and reveals details of her upcoming album. ‘Sapling Be’ is set for release August 25, 2023.

Ethereal and rhythmic, ‘Sapling Be’ is the title track and second release from Polly Barrett’s upcoming third album out October 6, 2023. ‘Sapling Be’ continues the discussion of her journey through motherhood. Inspired by both her son and her love of nature Polly says “The song is like a wish for my son that he grows strong and tall like a great oak tree, and with his roots firmly in the ground. That he never forgets his connection to nature.”

Struggling with writer’s block Polly had the idea of a song based on the sapling analogy for many years. It was following a meditative sensory forest therapy course in her local Glengarriff Nature Reserve that she found her creativity start to flow again. This meditative and spiritual release is captured thoroughly with Polly’s use of steel tongue drum and loop pedal to create a hypnotic other-worldly sound as the basis for ‘Sapling Be’ that continually brings her back to a place of pure creativity. On top of this dreamy base Polly layers looped vocals, bodhrán, cello and bass guitar. ‘Sapling Be’ was mixed by grammy-nominated producer Chris O’Brien (Clannad, Aslan, and Emma Langford) and mastered by Richard Dowling at WAV Mastering, Limerick.

‘Sapling Be’ follows up the success of recent single ‘Huge Mistake’ that saw Polly earn support from RTE Radio 1’s Louise Duffy, Today FM/98FM’s Claire Beck, Lyric FM’s Marty Whelan and Newstalk’s Sean Moncrieff. ‘Huge Mistake’ is an ode to finding beauty and one’s peace in an unexpected place. Infused with Polly’s own very personal experiences of motherhood, love, and loss ‘Huge Mistake’ offers an intimate look inside the life of the Cork singer and a glimpse of what to expect from her upcoming album Sapling Be out October 6.

Polly Barrett is a well-known name on the Irish folk scene. After releasing 2 albums, 2011’s Mr Bookshop and Probably Me in 2014 she took a break from music to focus on family. However, the experience of motherhood, surrounded by the beauty of living in the wilds of West Cork continued to inspire her. During the Covid-19 pandemic Polly quietly recorded and released “Dark Garden”, an EP of four new songs, one of which, ‘Thinking About You’ was chosen for a Discover Ireland Campaign for West Cork. Since then, Polly has been fervently writing songs and experimenting with new musical sounds instilled by her own experiences and magic of the natural world. Using a loop pedal, bodhrán, guitar, tongue drum and low whistle, Polly has developed an exciting new sound which is as compelling to see being created on stage as it is to listen to. Polly performed an Official Showcase at Folk Alliance in the US in 2022 and has just returned from performing at Milkwaukee Irish Fest in the US alongside the Coronas, Wallis Bird and a host of other Irish acts. She has also played alongside Jack O’Rourke, Caoimhín O’Raghallaigh and recently wowed at Tradfest.

These musical powerhouses offer a vivid glimpse into their personal journeys of love and life, beautifully capturing their distinct experiences of romance and intimacy.

Alicia and Becky are on a mission to take Irish music to a global level. As part of the roll out for the project, the duo is travelling to New York, a city known for its creative pulse, to cultivate new fandoms, forge strategic alliances, and breathe life into their project through visually stunning music videos. RTÉ announces new Irish-language music series Seisiún

Four iconic live music venues synonymous with Traditional and Folk music are opening their doors to musician Muireann Nic Amlaoibh showcasing the best and brightest of bands, musicians and singers who have proud associations with these much cherished family run venues. The Saw Doctors, Mick Flannery, Stockton’s Wing, Lisa Canny and The 4 of Us join us to celebrate the rich musical heritage of Campbell’s Tavern in Galway, The Cobblestone in Dublin, Connollys of Leap in West Cork and McGrory’s of Culdaff, Donegal.

Trailblazing new talent such as Clare Sands, Inni-K, Strung, Matthew Berrill, The Friel Sisters and Cormac McCarthy are just some of the names who cut their musical teeth performing live in these special spaces and they join in this unique celebration.

At the heart of each venue are the driving forces who have kept the stage doors open in good times and in bad. Whether that’s hearing from Tom Mulligan in the Cobblestone about the iconic role this venue has played in showcasing new music talent or Willie Campbell recalling the famous names who started on the stage in Campbells of Headford. Sam McNicholl in Connolly’s of Leap and John Reynolds of McGrorys in Culdaff highlight the significance and importance of these isolated rural venues as cultural linchpins and social spaces that contribute so much to local communities and to regional music culture.

While retaining that local and relaxed character, family run venues such as McGrory’s, Connolly’s, Campbells and the Cobblestone have earned reputations for hosting live music that dwarf those of far larger, more prestigious and better resourced concert halls and theatres. And they do so independent of State supports and resources. Seisiún seeks to amplify and enhance a sense of belonging and pride of place rooted in these venues, their unique locations and their struggle for survival.

Join us for a celebration of the unsung heroes of Irish music, the venues that have stood the test of time and nurtured the country’s most gifted artists. A feast of music awaits on Seisiún!

Seisiún is brought to you by the production team behind Cúltír (TG4) and the new series of Geantraí (TG4). The series will begin on Friday, 1 September, 2023 at 8.30p.m. on RTÉ 1 and programmes 2, 3 and 4 will air Friday, 8, 15 and 22 September at 8.30p.m.

Danny Carroll announces tour + new single coming Sept 8th

Part of the Dublin music scene for years, Danny is co-curator of A Litany Of Failures compilation series showcasing independent artists from across Ireland.  Having gigged in various projects, he’s opened for kindred spirits such as Jeffrey Lewis and Pavement guitarist Spiral Stairs, before the time came to work on his debut solo album.  Enlisting the help of Belfast based producer Chris W. Ryan (New Dad, Just Mustard, Robocobra Quartet), the two developed songs with a playful, anything goes approach.  Incorporating classical guitar, lapsteel, and melodica, Carroll’s songs have been likened to softer touchstones of indie rock – Wilco, Jonathan Richman, and Lee Hazelwood.

In January 2023, he released his debut solo single ‘Affection’. Hailed as “a compelling re-introduction” (The Last Mixed Tape) and an “idiosyncratic first outing” (Headstuff) the track went on to receive coverage on RTÉ Radio 1 and Hot Press among others.

New single ‘Cheesemonger’, coming out September 8th, sees Carroll wrestling with self-deprecation and sincerity.  A love song of sorts, the track sits somewhere between the knowing croon of The Divine Comedy and Father John Misty, before fully committing to unapologetic bombast. The track will be accompanied by a striking, macabre video made by Iarla McKeon (KhakiKid, Big Sleep), and is one of 20 tracks to feature on the recently releases A Litany Of Failures: Volume IV.  To celebrate the release, Danny is embarking on an Irish tour, with like-minded counterpart Laurie Shaw. See them perform at Casey’s Wexford (Sept 22nd), Whelan’s Dublin (Sept 23rd), Prim’s Kinsale (Sept 28th), Levis’ Ballydehob (Sept 29th), and Plug’d Cork (Sept 30th).
