New Single From Michael MacLennan ‘For Christmas’

While born in the Scottish Highlands, near Inverness, Michael has been a very welcome adopted son of Dublin city for the last ten years. Together with his wife Edel, he is looking forward to his first Christmas as a parent; the couple became first time parents in August to their now three-month old son, Tom.

The song is reflective, acknowledging and positive also, at its core. Remembering life as a child growing up in snow filled winters in Scotland, Michael allowing himself to consider a visit this winter; seeing family and friends again after so long.  Acknowledging the difficulties of the last almost twenty months of lockdown and “licking wounds”.  “Looking at and experiencing this reality and still being able to be thankful for having our memories, thankful for having life and for us; thankful for having our beautiful baby son, this Christmas, for Christmas.”

As the song says; “We never thought we’d see a year like this one, but then you made it better by painting life a lighter shade of blue…” Michael says; “It seems so right to have this song now, for Tom’s first Christmas, his presence has gifted us our positive perspective.”

Michael MacLennan relocated to Ireland shortly after releasing his critically acclaimed debut album WOLVES in 2012. A gifted pianist, singer and songwriter he has performed at many of the UK and Ireland’s most established venues as both an artist and a playing alongside industry colleagues and friends; he is one of Dublin’s most in-demand musicians performing on stage with Gavin James, Paul BradyDeclan O’RourkeMundyWallis BirdLisa Hannigan and Gavin Glass amongst many others.  Indeed, Michael has been praised by producer Gavin Glass as “one of the greatest writers and musicians I’ve worked with.”

In 2015 Michael achieved another ambition, opening his music school; The Musical Institute. Michael says, After many years of teaching people from all walks of life, I set up The Music Institute.”  He continued, “My aim was simple; to encourage a love of music through exposing students to music they might not normally gravitate towards as opposed to the more traditional approach of forcing grades and exams on everyone! I’m really passionate about this and to hopefully unlock music for students of all ages.”

During one of our Covid lockdown period’s Michael’s school came to the attention of Vodafone.  Michael explains; “The advert came about as a direct link to the school – they contacted me asking if I along with some of our students would be interested in doing an advert with them, we were delighted to accept!”  Ultimately for Michael the key was the purity of the work and the landscape in which it the advert was created; “The important element was that it was all students of the school (not actors) and the music was performed and sung by the students. It was a massive boost to them during a tough year for everyone.”

The advert was released in May of this year and has already reached almost 1,000,000 views!
You can watch it here:

His love of writing and performing his own music is hugely important to Michael and his love of the process lives through in his new single, For Christmas.

Likewise, with his most recent second album, DREAMERSDREAMERS is a self-produced, Paul Buchanan inspired (The Blue Nile) confessional long-play reflecting on life and love in modern times and features some of Ireland’s most prominent musicians including Jake Curran (Julia Michaels, Niall Horan, Dermot Kennedy), Aongus Ralston (The Waterboys) and Shane Fitzsimons (Damien Rice, Lisa Hannigan).

This and all of Michael’s work can be accessed on all digital platforms including Spotify;

Martin Leahy Releases Christmas Single ‘Goin’ Back’

This is the latest release from Cork musician Martin Leahy. It is a cover of the Carole King/Gerry Goffin classic ‘Goin’ Back’.

The version recorded by Dusty Springfield was used in Ireland in an ESB advert first transmitted in 1988 and as a result of that, coupled with its nostalgic lyrics, the song has a strong association with the Christmas season. Martin’s emotional and evocative interpretation of the track features soaring strings by Aine O Gorman and some beautiful clarinet by Tom Jordan.

This release also celebrates an amazing year for Martin as a singer/songwriter. He released his debut single, Song For Kirsty MacColl, just one year ago.

During that year he released another two singles, The Wolves In The Valley and Brian, which both received great airplay locally, and also making the RTE Radio One Recommends List resulting in lots of national airplay. He was selected as a finalist in the USA International Songwriting Competition reaching the final 16 in the lyrics category out of an overall number of 26,000 entries. He also played his first solo gigs and released a three-track EP for SomeRiseSomeFall in aid of the charity ‘A Lust For Life’

Martin is a musician from Cork and has been playing on the Irish music scene for about 20 years. Along with his recent successes as a singer/songwriter he has worked extensively with some of Irelands greatest songwriters and musicians including John Spillane, Christy Moore (on his No.1 selling album ‘Listen’), Cormac O Caoimh, Ger Wolfe, Jimmy McCarthy, Greenshine, Noel Brazil, Declan Sinnott among many others. An accomplished multi-instrumentalist, he has produced many albums including the most recent very successful album by Cormac O Caoimh called ‘Swim Crawl Walk Run’ which was awarded album of the week by many radio stations including RTE Radio One, RTE Lyric and BBC Radio Ulster. He also produced Ger Wolfe’s well-received album ‘I Have Been Loved’. Other productions include Leah Sohotra and John Neville.

As a member of the traditional Irish group North Cregg he has toured the World playing many major festivals including Glastonbury, Cambridge and Milwaukee. As a songwriter he has collaborated with a number of writers including John Neville, Mary Greene, and more recently with Cormac O Caoimh on his successful single ‘Building My Ark’ which received substantial airplay around the country reaching 870,000 listeners nationwide!

Hot on the tails of its Dingle event, Other Voices travels to the capital for their only Dublin show this year. For twenty years, Other Voices has developed an unrivalled reputation for nurturing and supporting Irish musicians, making them audible and visible to the world. This partnership event with the Guinness Storehouse will bring a very special curation of Ireland’s premier musical talent to an intimate crowd for a truly memorable concert.

This exclusive live event will showcase the cultural richness of Ireland and, crucially, provide a global platform for performers whose livelihoods have been severely impacted in recent times. The event will also stream live on the night at Othervoices.ie, bringing the soundtrack of home to those who remain abroad this Christmas season.

Other Voices: Home at the Guinness Storehouse will feature BellX1Maverick SabrePillow QueensJohn Francis FlynnRyan McMullen and the Theodora Byrne Ensemble. The evening event will be hosted by Loah, the singer songwriter and actor of Sierra Leonean / Irish origin, who will also perform on the night in a special collaboration. While studying at Trinity College Dublin, Loah has collaborated with Little Green Cars, Slow Skies, and I Have A Tribe, amongst others. Speaking of her excitement to get back to the Guinness Storehouse Loah said “Its a wonderful gift to be back in the Guinness Storehouse for another celebration of everything Other Voices Home means. While we are perhaps not where we hoped we would be in the world at this time, there is still much cause for celebration of everything weve been through, our nearest and dearest, and great music. I am honoured to host this years show.“

Speaking about the production Philip King, Other Voices said: “At Christmas time, home is at the heart of everything. As we all know, that journey home was not possible for so many last year. Therefore, we aimed to collapse distance and light a pathway home and connect all of those separated from the ones they love, from friends, from family, from each other. Togetherness has never been more important. This evening will connect, entertain and inspire and send a message of hope, love and courage this Christmas. I am delighted that we can again work at this remarkable location, with the Guinness Storehouse team.”

On his upcoming performance at the Guinness Storehouse Ryan McMullan said: “I look forward to singing some songs on the Other Voices stage, with a pint of my favourite stout, right at the source of which it is made, both to a live audience and to everyone tuning in at home. What an incredible way to end the year!

Francie Conway to Release ‘Christmas Night’

Christmas Night is released today, the 8th of December, John Lennon’s anniversary.

The seeds for this Christmas song were sown when Francie was with RCA Records, London.

It was customary at that time for rock artists to record a Christmas song and as Francie knew Noddy Holder from Slade and Chris Rea at this time, who both wrote Christmas songs, it was always at the back of his mind to try it sometime…

Time to remember, time to reflect

Days snowed in, we never forget

Memories, stories told

Family and love ones all around

It’s a time to evaluate

What really matters in our world today

Human kindness, It’s not too late

The gift of love is all we need

“A feel good song and video filmed in Ireland & Sweden”

Ruby Moss releases her 5th single of the year, ‘Christmas with My Friends’, and what a sensation it is!

‘Christmas with My Friends’ is beautiful original song that clearly demonstrates Ruby’s musical and lyrical skills.

We hear the influence of her days with St Patrick’s Cathedral Choir School in her beautiful voice and obvious talent for melody and arrangement throughout this short song.

This song, like her others, was written and recorded when she was just 13.  Ruby wrote, arranged, performed, and co-produced all her tracks.

What a year it has been for 14-year-old Ruby Moss.  Five great singles that have achieved the status of #1 in the iTunes singer songwriter charts, amassed nearly 1000 subscribers on YouTube and over 50000 views.

Selected to participate in the National Concert Hall Creative Lab, Ruby is currently writing music to be performed at the New Music Festival in April.

George Murphy Announces Nationwide Tour For 2022

Following up the success of his 2019 tour George Murphy and his band The Rising Sons are back on the road and have just announced a 11 date nationwide tour for 2022.

Tickets go on sale Thursday, December 9, at 9AM.

The Dubliner made his mark on the Irish music scene after a memorable appearance on the RTE Television show “You’re a Star” where his rendition of classic songs by Luke Kelly wowed the nation.

George has released four solo studio albums including Dreamed A Dream(Sony), So The Story Goes, The Ballad of Archie Thompson, and 2016’s Shadowman: The Stable Sessions. George also toured extensively with The High Kings filling the vacancy left by the departure of Martin Furey.

In 2018 when George decided to tour his solo show he was told to find 2 or 3 session musicians, work on a set and take the show on the road. What initially started off as musicians at a session progressed to a collective of musicians.

Mixing electric rock guitar and bass with whistles and bodhrans gives the band its unique sound.

Now a collective of 8 musicians George says, “I enjoyed too much the vibe of these sessions, the honesty and authenticity behind our newly formed sound and where it might take us so I wanted to take this on the road.”

They have since released the live album The New Beginnings Tour and singles ‘Darndale to the States’ a true story of two young Dublin lads who, in 1985, managed to avoid authorities at train stations, ferry ports and airports to go on one hell of a journey from the streets of Dublin all the way to New York and ‘Dublin Inspires’ written to lift spirits during lockdown which went to #2 in the charts with the video reaching 200K views.

George says, “As a Dublin balladeer for many years I wanted a Dublin ballad of my own. This is it. A tip of the hat to our nation’s capital and all the history, culture, tradition and characters it’s thrown up over the years”. These two singles will appear of their upcoming studio album due out 2022.

ABBACAXI Reschedules His Debut Irish Headline Show

Irish multi-instrumentalist Abbacaxi has rescheduled his show live at The Workman’s Club Cellar on 10th December ‘21 to 25th February ‘22.

Tickets will remain valid for the new show date, limited tickets remain available from www.singularartists.ie

Abbacaxi was crowned Nialler9 ‘Best New Irish Artists of 2021’ earlier this month.

He draws on his love of jazz, funk and proper songwriting, harks back to a time when dance music was made by real musicians, but comes with very modern dynamics.

Playing instruments was one of the few things that a young, Dublin-based Thomas Garnett was interested in outside of school. He started on drums, and soon joined all sorts of teenage bands. The energy of rock rhythms captivated him at first, but it was the beauty of melody that eventually turned his ear.

Now performing on his own, an Abbacaxi live show takes you on a trip with plenty of emotional peaks and troughs. Playing instruments and synths, looping from a library of his own sounds and singing, he goes from trip-hop to house.

There are floaty-light summer grooves with airy drumming and heavenly vocals. Bubbling deep house rhythms are stuffed with organic sounds, and funky bass riffs make for steamy late-night grooves. They are songs rather than tracks, and are all infused with love, warmth and balmy synths. The subtle but seductive vocals add to the classy good-time feelings.
