IMRO First Cuts at Abner Brown’s with Maria Kelly, A Great Quiet and Molly Sterling

Maria Kelly, A Great Quiet and Molly Sterling have just been announced to perform at the next IMRO First Cuts Showcase at Abner Brown’s. The November edition of the monthly showcase, will take place on Wednesday 15^th November at 8.00pm. IMRO First Cuts Showcases at Abner Brown’s feature the best up and coming as well as established Irish acts. In the intimate setting performers are given the opportunity to debut new tracks along with their current material. Performance highlights and interviews with all acts who perform are later streamed online at www.IMRO.ie and across IMRO’s social media channels. To date, showcases have featured appearances from the likes of Marc O’Reilly, Gavin James, Craig Gallagher, Ailbhe Reddy, Mark Geary, Farah Elle, Bronagh Gallagher, Chasing Abbey, Wild Youth and Orla Gartland.

Growing up in Mayo, Ireland, Maria spent many years crafting and developing her sound into a combination of atmospheric-indie-folk. First taking influence from the story-telling elements of Irish-trad, as well as artists like Regina Spektor and Lisa Hannigan, her music aims to share deeply personal, humanising and heartbreaking experiences. Maria arrived in 2015 with the delicate ‘Before It Has Begun’ (Veta Records) before playing the Other Voices Music Trail. ‘Stitches’ (Veta Records) followed, praised by the 405 and quickly named one of ‘The 50 Best Tracks of 2016’ in The Irish Times. In 2017, Maria was named one of ’50 People to Watch’ in The Irish Times, which was followed by the release of her debut EP, ‘The Things I Should’. The four track EP, produced by Matt Harris (HAWK), is Maria’s most personal release to date, detailing her struggles with honest self-expression. ‘The Things I Should’ has received praise from various online publications including Wonderland, Mahogany and The Line of Best Fit. Live, Maria has toured extensively across the UK and Ireland supporting the likes of KT Tunstall, James Vincent McMorrow and Wyvern Lingo. Most recently, she has finished up a co-headline Irish tour alongside Dublin musician Ailbhe Reddy, including a stop at The Great Escape Festival in Brighton.

A Great Quiet is made up of Will O’Donnell and Aran Cardiff, both from Athy in Kildare. Formed just a few months ago, they launched their debut single ‘Open Spaces’ on 2FM’s Eoghan MC Dermott show – “if this is a statement of intent then by gosh you will hear a lot more of these boys” Eoghan McDermott. They have recently played the Cosby Stage at Electric Picnic after winning 2FM’s Play The Picnic competition and are releasing their debut EP early in 2018 having recorded in Herbert Studios.

Molly Sterling is a young Dublin-based singer-songwriter, whose music takes on a dark and deep direction, reflecting an artist maturing and a songwriting style which gives a clearer sense of who Sterling is. She possesses a sonorous vocal influenced by and reminiscent of the likes of Lana Del Ray and London Grammar’s Hannah Reid. Along with her new band that now includes a rhythmic section of cello, drums and guitar, Sterling’s latest single ‘Plain Static’ is just the first hint of what this artist can do. With appearances at Hard Working Class Heroes festival 2017, Culture Night Belfast, Canalphonic under her belt, this single is well and truly the announcement of her arrival on the Irish music scene proper and will affirm her as an artist worth keeping a very close eye on. Molly’s music is rare, raw and overflowing with exposed emotion that delivers every note and syllable with precise detail, giving the listener the feeling that it has been honed from somewhere deep and unfathomable.

Abner Brown’s is not only the coolest barbershop in town, it’s also one of Dublin’s most unique venues. The unlikely Rathmines venue has already seen performances from hundreds of acts such as Ash, Gavin Glass, Duke Special, David Geraghty (of Bell X1 fame), The Young Folk, Molly Sterling, Mundy, The Hot Sprockets and many more. REM’s Michael Stipe has even paid a visit.

IMRO is a national organisation that administers the performing right in copyright music in Ireland on behalf of its members (songwriters, composers and music publishers) and on behalf of members of the international overseas societies that are affiliated to it. Music users such as broadcasters, venues and businesses must pay for their use of copyright music by way of a blanket licence fee.
