The Burma Share Live at Windmill Lane Session

In April 2020 The Burma released ‘Sugar Moonlight’, a 5-track EP which garnered high praise from the likes of Rolling Stone and Clash Magazine.

Amidst the uncertainty of lockdown the Cork Indie outfit kept themselves busy with their own YouTube series. “The Live and Lonely Sessions” was a homemade series that saw the band release weekly performances of both their own material and some classic cover songs all from the isolation of their own homes.

As restrictions eased, The Burma took a trip to Ringsend in Dublin to visit their friend and sound engineer Cian Synnott in the famous Windmill Lane Studios. Joined by a small film crew of Ciara O’Toole and Derv Maclean the band recorded a slick live studio session.

Opening with their own powerful version of ‘Da Funk’ by Daft Punk The Burma pay homage to a Cork cult anthem by slipping in a verse from Bony’s 2008 remix of the house classic. From this they seamlessly run into 2019 single ‘Phoney Personality’ followed by two more tracks from April’s ‘Sugar Moonlight’ EP.

The Burma are due to start recording on their debut album in October with producer Christian Best (Mick Flannery, O Emperor, Jack O’Rourke, Marlene Enright).

Wild Youth return with New Single ‘Next To You’

Wild Youth – one of the hottest Irish bands to emerge in recent times – reveal ‘Next To You’, a bold step towards global domination after making major strides in the Irish pop scene over the last few years.

A euphoric 80s-steeped soundscape, packed with glittering hooks and inspired by the all-too-universal idea of immediate romance, ‘Next To You’ is the latest in a string of hugely popular ‘sad bangers’ which have seen the four-piece light up the Irish charts and cultivate a fiercely loyal fanbase.

‘Next To You’ is further complemented by a vibrant, kaleidoscopic video conceived by the band and The Tenth Man, marked by the four member’s hypnotic and irresistibly catchy dances – a further spectacle of the Dublin outfit’s distinctive hip-shaking moves and peppy vigour which has had them selling out shows in iconic venues like Dublin’s legendary Olympia Theatre.

Speaking on the track, Wild Youth shared: “‘Next To You’ is about an immediate connection with somebody; that overwhelming feeling of meeting “the one”, and wanting to spend every single minute by their side. Regardless of whatever that involves, you’ll literally do anything.”

Already making a major impact across streaming services with pop gems like ‘Can’t Move On’ and ‘Making Me Dance’ racking up millions of plays, the band’s blood-pounding choruses, heart-stompingly gorgeous melodies, and deft lyricism have seen them share the stage with the likes of Mumford and Sons, Niall Horan, The Script, Kodaline and Zara Larsson on arena-sized shows.

Homegrown, humble fun is the main preoccupation of the Irish quartet – comprised of lead vocalist David Whelan, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Conor O’Donohoe, lead guitarist Ed Porter and drummer Callum McAdam – whose collective self-assured swagger has caught eyes and ears everywhere.

Leading a scene of exciting new acts, like all the greats, Wild Youth’s penchant for sonic risk-taking means they are constantly evolving, and 2020 is set to be a huge year for the band.

Soda Blonde Announce new Single ‘Love Me World’

Soda Blonde have announced their newest single ‘Love Me World’ to be released across streaming platforms on September 24th alongside the band’s first live-streamed launch show. “‘Love Me World’ is a song about acknowledging the darker moments of wanting to be loved by everyone. The idea of bending to fit the zeitgeist in the pursuit of acceptance and love.” – Faye O’Rourke (Lead singer). In celebration of the single release, the band will perform an exclusive launch show to be streamed from a secret location in Ireland’s capital on September 23rd. Tickets for the show are available now here.

The single follows the band’s second EP ‘isolation content’ released in May this year. The EP saw support from BBC Radio One’s Huw Stephens, Janice Long of BBC Radio Wales and Ireland’s biggest stations RTÉ Radio 1, Today FM and 2FM as well as piquing the interest of The Sunday Times.

Soda Blonde emerged from the ashes of internationally acclaimed band Little Green Cars; whose debut album saw them sky rocket to number one in the Irish album charts. Fronted by singer-songstress Faye O’Rourke, Adam O’Regan (keys and guitar), Donagh Seaver O’Leary (bass) and Dylan Lynch (drums), the transformation is led by a distinctive new sound which seamlessly weaves together influences from Fleetwood Mac, Little Dragon and Kate Bush without compromising the integrity and unique charm that Little Green Cars were known for. The result…enticing, dreamy alternative-pop music. With two immaculate EPs under their belt, a new single and new found approach to their craft, plus their debut album almost finished, the world is ready to love Soda Blonde

Minister Martin announces establishment of Arts and Culture Recovery Taskforce

Catherine Martin T.D., Minister for Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht has announced the establishment of a new Taskforce for the recovery of the Arts and Culture sector under the Chair of Clare Duignan.

The Programme for Government: Our Shared Future, includes a commitment to “establish a cross-departmental taskforce to develop a clear approach, informed by the views of all stakeholders, to protect and sustain the arts and culture sector through the COVID-19 recovery and beyond. This will be fed into the National Economic Plan.”  While the restrictions put in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus have had an unprecedented effect on society and on the economy, the impact on the arts and culture sector has been more detrimental and will undoubtedly last longer than that of any other sector.

Terms of Reference

The Taskforce will prepare a report for the Minister for Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht including a set of recommendations on how best the arts and culture sector can adapt and recover from the unprecedented damage arising from the Covid-19 pandemic.  The sector includes culture, the arts, the audiovisual industry and the live entertainment industry.  Taking as its starting point, the research and evidence of the devastating impact of the pandemic on the sector compiled by the Department, the Arts Council and other stakeholders, the Taskforce will:-

  • adopt a solution-focused approach;
  • seek sector-specific expert input and consult with stakeholders inviting proposals for its consideration;
  • invite additional individuals or expertise to attend meetings on an ad hoc basis, as it deems necessary;
  • focus on providing intelligence and recommendations for an expected on-going and varying impact of COVID-19 restrictions;
  • identify immediate and medium term goals for recovery and sustainability in the sector;
  • identify possible policy initiatives or impediments to a robust sustainable recovery in the sector;
  • recommend whole of Government policy initiatives and actions to support the sector;
  • report to the Minister for Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht by the 31 October 2020 in order to provide the Government with an action-plan for the sector.

Composition of Taskforce

The commitment in the Programme for Government speaks to a cross-departmental taskforce and members will be drawn from across Government departments and state bodies, including the Minister’s Department, the Department of Health and Department of Social Protection.  Departmental representation is supplemented by the Arts Council and representatives of culture and the arts including theatre and live music, including the commercial sector.  Full membership will be announced shortly.

Speaking today, Minister Martin said: “The performing arts and live entertainment sector shut down early and it will be among the last sector to re-open fully.  The negative impact on the arts, culture and live entertainment has been well established and quantified over the past five months in research undertaken by the Arts Council and by my Department.  Given that the financial and overall detrimental impact of the crisis on the sector is well established, the Taskforce will propose a suite of solutions and actions to ensure the long term sustainability and health of the sector.  I am delighted that Clare Duignan has agreed to Chair the Taskforce, bringing as she does breadth and depth of knowledge and experience to the role.”

Speaking of her appointment, Ms Duignan said: “It is crucial that these important sectors are not left behind as we rebuild Ireland through the Covid-19 recovery and beyond.  I hope to lead and work with the Taskforce to deliver effective recommendations that will sustain and protect the arts, to help find a way back for artists, performers and live events workers to the audiences and communities they need, and to restore to Irish citizens the creativity and sustenance that the arts and entertainment sectors give us.”

Clare Duignan held key leadership roles at RTÉ for over 20 years, including Head of Independent Productions, Director of Programmes TV, and Managing Director Radio and Performing Groups.  She is currently a board member with IMRO, The Irish Times DAC, The Chester Beatty, Fáilte Ireland, Business to Arts, and Ireland Reaching Out.  She has previously served on the board of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, The Dublin International Film Festival, The Arts Council, and the Abbey Theatre Council, and was Chair of the Advisory Board of ShinAwil Film and Television.  She is a Board Performance Assessor with the Institute of Directors, and a Lead Entrepreneur with Acorns, supporting early stage female entrepreneurs in rural Ireland.

New Music from Pete Kavanagh

Pete Kavanagh releases his single ‘To Hold The Red Rose’ today.

‘To Hold The Red Rose’ has something of the rough and rowdy Dylan and a little of early Tom Waits, but as influences only, this is no imitation, this is something new. Mixing traditional folk forms with the sweetness of a classic chorus and mercurial organ, Pete’s vocal has a passion that gives the song a timeless air, managing the great pop trick of letting the hint of euphoria shine through the stately melancholy and melody.

In May 2019, singer-songwriter Pete Kavanagh wandered through a bookshop in the days following his father’s death.  He was lost in grief. He found himself upstairs in the rare books section and a green hardback book with no dust cover, showing a woman in a regal robe holding aloft a red rose caught his eye. Something about the image stirred his soul. For the Red Rose it was called, a novel by Eliza F Pollard with illustrations by James Durden.  Pete bought this book, sat down in the bookshop café and wrote a poem on the flyleaf.  The ink flowed but not with words of grief; they were words of love, gratitude and survival.  And so, out of the depths of despair a love song took life – ‘To Hold The Red Rose’.

As it happened, at that very time Pete was in the advanced stages of recording an album, but the life-changing impact of losing his father gave him a new perspective.  He abandoned some of the previously recorded songs and ‘To Hold The Red Rose’ was the first of a new batch of songs Pete would write and record for what is his debut album ‘Join Up The Dots’.

The recording came to a sudden halt in March 2020 after the Covid-19 lockdown put everything on ice, but now Pete is proud to present his debut single. ‘To Hold The Red Rose’ is set for release on Thursday, September 10th, 2020.

Serendipity was also at play when it came to marrying a video to the song.  MN Dance Company had produced the dance piece called “DE-SET” and had made it available under a Creative Commons license during lockdown. Pete’s wife Pamela, a graphic designer, loved the performance and edited the dance to suit Pete’s song. She sent the edit to Michal and Nastja of MN Dance Company for their blessing. Michal and Nastja, who are partners in life as well as creative and business partners, replied to say they loved the song and edit and gave Pete and Pam their seal of approval.

If the dance style looks familiar, MN Dance Company’s performance was what made the video for Black Swan by K-Pop band BTS so compelling.

The single ‘To Hold The Red Rose’ is released Thursday, September 10th, 2020. Pete’s album, ‘Join Up The Dots’ is available from November 18th, 2020.

Pete Kavanagh is a singer-songwriter, musician and storyteller from Co. Kildare, Ireland. His style is best described as Indie-Folk. His sound invokes the vintage quality of musical influences such as Bob Dylan, Nick Cave, Johnny Cash, David Bowie and Leonard Cohen, but a contemporary feel that is unique to him, surges through the music.

On ‘To Hold The Red Rose’, Pete’s deep, sonorous voice lends a blues quality to the track and an energetic mandolin solo bounces the song into more traditional folk waters, which flow through his heritage.

Aural Air and Patrick Mc Eleney to Release Single in Aid of The Alzheimer Society of Ireland

Two Irish-based singer-songwriters Aural Air aka Laura Rai and Patrick Mc Eleney will release a standalone musical collaboration ‘Memory’ a song on Tuesday, September 22nd that looks at an experience of living with dementia to raise much-needed funds for The Alzheimer Society of Ireland (The ASI) during World Alzheimer’s Month 2020.

The song, which was written and recorded at Attica Audio in Co. Donegal last summer as part of the Earagail Arts Festival recording studio residency, inhabits a dark, romantic, atmospheric soundscape with rising piano, guitar and cello sweeping into a dramatic crescendo akin to the swirling Atlantic waves where it was written.

The duo were tasked with writing a song together at the residency last year, and when they were thinking of what to write their lyrics about the topic of dementia and ageing were on both of their minds. Laura had just seen a beautiful clip on Twitter by Nick Harvey of his Dad playing the piano here and that was a particular inspiration.

‘Memory’ will be released on Tuesday, 22nd September and will be available on Spotify, Apple Music and Bandcamp with all proceeds from sales or streams of Memory will be donated to The ASI which will be used to support the vital dementia-specific supports and services.

The single is accompanied by a stunning video, directed by Gareth Stack, which depicts a woman who is lost in familiar places with the lush backdrop of leafy gardens versus populated city streets giving rise to a series of fragmented autobiographical memories captured in the video.

The cover artwork is by collage artist Tom Doig, from his ‘Tlön Series’. The project has been kindly supported by Dr. Richard Roche (Maynooth University) and the Neurological Alliance of Ireland.

September is World Alzheimer’s Month which is the international campaign every September to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds dementia. September 2020 will mark the ninth World Alzheimer’s Month. The campaign was launched in 2012: World Alzheimer’s Day is on 21st September each year. The theme for this year is Let’s Talk About Dementia.

Aural Air, aka Laura Rai, originally from Co. Sligo and currently living in Maynooth, Co. Kildare, is a singer-songwriter, musician, and PhD candidate at Trinity College Dublin. Laura’s research focuses on the cognitive basis of decision-making in dementia and addiction, and is supported by the Irish Research Council. Patrick is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Co. Donegal and is currently living in Co. Wicklow.

Singer-Songwriter Aural Air said: “Over the past couple of years I have been researching the neuropsychology of dementia with the aim of developing early indicators of this syndrome. Although risk factors have been identified, there is still so much we have yet to learn about the causes of dementia and how to prevent it. I wanted to do a fundraiser for The Alzheimer Society of Ireland as dementia affects so many people in Ireland. This year has been especially difficult for many of those living with these conditions and their carers and I hope through this fundraiser that we can raise awareness of their experiences and support them in some way.”

Singer-Songwriter Patrick McEleney said: “The song was written about the experience of living with dementia and it only felt right that any proceeds from it would go towards helping those who live with the condition – particularly in these difficult times we find ourselves in. The support from everyone involved has been amazing and it would also be great to give something back.”

Live Performance and Music Industry Support Packages of €6 million announced by Minister Martin

The Minister for Culture, Arts, Media, Tourism, Sport and the Gaeltacht, Catherine Martin T.D., has launched a number of new music and performance support schemes to aid employment in the creative industries given the unprecedented nature of the challenge facing the music and live performance sectors owing to Covid-19 restrictions.

An allocation of €5 million is being made available under the “Live Performance Support Scheme” which aims to assist commercial venues, producers and promoters of live performances and provide employment to workers in the creative industries.  The scheme will help to de-risk the costs of preparing for new productions which may subsequently have to be postponed, cancelled or curtailed due to restrictions to safeguard public health. The main objective of the scheme is to provide employment opportunities in the ticketed performance sector and allow commercial organisers of live performances to commence preparations immediately and productions to go ahead in the near future while also complying with public health protection measures. This scheme has been developed following consultation with the sector and will be managed directly by the Department.

A further support package, the “Music Stimulus Package”, involves three funding schemes designed to help sustain the popular and commercial music sector across all music genres, including rock, pop, hip hop, indie, jazz, country and western and traditional and folk.  Under this package, a fund of €1,000,000 is being put in place to stimulate areas of work which artists would usually fund with income from own sources including live event fees.

The music support schemes are targeted at professional musicians and their teams and will support song writing camps, recording and album releases.  The aim is to ensure that Irish musicians, engineers, PR, media, agents, labels and publishers can continue to develop and share their work in the context of COVID restrictions. The Music Stimulus Package schemes will be managed on behalf of the Department by First Music Contact and will be subject to peer panel assessment.

Announcing the new measure of support Minister Catherine Martin said:

“I am conscious of the unprecedented nature of the challenge facing live performance promoters and producers, not least from a financial point of view and accordingly am pleased to announce this funding response that will assist established commercial venues and promoters to employ performers, artists, technicians, creative and performance support staff up to the end of 2020 in anticipation of the return of audiences to live performance.  Further, to help ensure the survival and revival of the music industry in Ireland, I am announcing the introduction of a number of schemes which have been designed to provide incentives for creating new work, the recording of new music from all music genres and the promotion and release of work, which might not otherwise happen in 2020.  These schemes will also support the music professionals who work with artists and facilitate music performance, recording and album release.”

Key features of the these Support Schemes include-

  • Support the creation of employment opportunities in the culture, creative and music industries.
  • Address the large gap left by the absence of income from live performances
  • Support performances/work that will commence on or before 31 December 2020.
  • Support commercial venues, producers and promoters in the culture sector (e.g. music, entertainment and theatre).
  • Support the music professionals and aim to ensure that Irish musicians, engineers, PR, media, agents, labels and publishers can continue to develop and share their work in the context of COVID restrictions.

Applications can be made immediately.
