Galway Native Me Auld Flower To Release Single ‘Get Out Of California’

Galway native Me Auld Flower releases single ‘Get Out Of California’ with an accompanying video on 24th July 2020.The single coincides with a limited edition CD release of album ‘The Vaults Of Consciousness’, available on Bandcamp.

Me Auld Flower wrote the song after coming home to Ireland from the US, having lived there on and off for a number of years.

I’d met a lot of dodgy characters, got myself into some strange situations, and my life had begun to spiral a little bit,” he says.

My relationship at the time had exploded spectacularly and I ended up holed up in a country house in Connemara for my own good with a stray cat I’d just met. Each of us minding the other.

I wrote the song on a long summer’s evening, sitting in the upstairs window looking out on the back garden and adjoining churchyard. The sun was setting, the trees were full of birdsong, and the cat, who usually turned tail whenever I picked up the guitar, sat quietly on the windowsill in a kind of unspoken solidarity

It was a really productive and beautiful time in my life during which I wrote most of the album – a potent remedy to what had passed.

‘Get Out Of California’ is released on 24th July across all digital platforms.

Soulful Pop Singer Clodagh Releases Video for ‘You Got Me’

Today, Thursday 9th July, soulful pop singer Clodagh releases the video for her single, ‘You Got Me’ – a song released in June that saw the Cork singer-songwriter enter the Irish Breakers Radio Chart and amass over 125,000 impacts on Irish radio.

The singer, who is from Macroom in Co. Cork, has received a lot of praise for her vocal style. In addition to studying at BIMM Dublin, Clodagh has trained under renowned vocal coaches Gemma Sugrue (RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Chic, Billy Ocean, Jerry Fish, Lee Fields) and Chris Johnson (The Naked Vocalist). She herself teaches as a vocal coach when she’s not studying for her final year of college.

“I love theory and was trying to play with more advanced concepts like modes in a context where it didn’t stand out as a modal song,” Clodagh says. You Got Me is about growing as a person and the struggle that can present when you have to let people go in life, that feeling of people being infatuated by a person that you shouldn’t and resisting temptations.”

Born in Rhode Island in the States, Clodagh moved back to Ireland with her father when she was very young. A big fan of Lianne La Havas, Tom Odell and Jessie Ware, Clodagh’s love for layered harmonies has already seen her compared to the likes of Lisa Hannigan and Wyvern Lingo.

Last year, she was selected to do a residency at Attica Audio, as part of Donegal Arts Festival, with producers Tommy McLaughlin (Villagers, Soak, In Their Thousands, Ailbhe Reddy) and Rocky O’Reilly (Gary Lightbody, And So I Watch You From Afar, The Wood Burning Savages). She was also chosen for a specialist jazz course in Izola, Slovenia, where she worked with Emilia Martensson, her sister Marina Martensson (from the band Laibach) and Femi Temowo (guitarist for Amy Winehouse).

‘You Got Me’ was be independently released on Friday 5th June 2020 on all usual platforms. Stream and download link: https://s.disco.ac/ydzbjyrzgzkc

This performance will take place on Tuesday the 14th of July and will be made available worldwide, free of charge, thanks to the support of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, RTÉ and IMRO. Courage series one is currently being shown on RTÉ 2 Thursdays at 23:30

Speaking of the project Minister Madigan said: “Building on the phenomenal success of the original Courage programme with a reach of over 2.7m, I am delighted to support this new initiative of live streamed performances from some of our best known heritage sites. The outpouring of wellbeing created by the first series of performances will no doubt be carried through Courage 2 and reminds us that culture lifts us up beyond circumstance and challenges and is vital to the core of our collective humanity.”

IMRO Chief Executive Victor Finn said “In times of crisis we often turn to music creators and artists for their unique ability to interpret and reflect on the world in which we live. Music is a collective experience which can overcome physical distance and is the perfect antidote to the growing sense of alienation and isolation we have all felt in recent times – even more so, now we are being asked to actively practise social distancing.  The Other Voices’ Courage series brings some of our finest Irish music creators to the world stage from a number of unique locations around Ireland in what we hope will be inspiring and unforgettable performances.”

Other Voices founder and director Philip King said “We are delighted to present this second season of Other Voices Courage as part of the Government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic. This is about bringing people together through music, and recognising the essential and powerful contribution that artists continue to make to our lives. We are inspired by the response here in Ireland and globally to the first season of Other Voices Courage, and our artists and crews have helped to bring beauty, solace, strength and a sense of belonging to people at this time of national and global crisis – is ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine. The Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht has played a leading and imaginative role in making it possible for our artists and crews to work together to create and present Other Voices Courage.”

Latest Swimmers Jackson Single Out Friday

‘Birthday Girl’ – an unsentimental love letter to the big sound of the indie pop punk axis of the 90s – will be released on Friday, 17th July by Swimmers Jackson.

The song is the third single from ‘Murmuration’, Niall Jackson’s first full length album using his ‘Swimmers Jackson’ alias, which was released in early May of this year.

Niall says of the song: “It was borne out of a little frustration on my part that a) Nothing seemed to be moving for me, and b) I was really missing my bandmates so wanted to see if I could do this kind of song on my own.”

Playing solo around the UK and Ireland in between touring with his other bands Bouts and Sweat Threats, Swimmers Jackson was named as one of State Magazine’s ‘Faces of’ as well as one of ‘50 Things to Look forward to for 2020’ by The Point of Everything

Formerly a three-piece, Jackson released two EPs under the name ‘Swimmers’, (‘Swimmer’s Year’ 2013, ‘This Burning Circus’ 2015). After moving to London with no bandmates, he was left reconfiguring Swimmers songs back into solo versions. This new found confidence led to the recording of nine new songs between 2017-2019. Singles creeping out as seen fit, before the debut album ‘Murmuration’ finally sees the light of day this May 2020.

His influences include Elliott Smith, early Weezer (emphasis on early), Andy Shauf, Stephen Malkmus, David Berman, Cat Power, Villagers, So Cow, Pixies and R.E.M.

Jackson’s other acts BoutsSweat Threats continue to enjoy success, touring the UK, Europe, and North America, opening for the likes of Johnny Marr, Cloud Nothings, Yuck and P.U.S.A. In January 2019 he recently released a new album ‘Flow’, with Bouts.

Róisín O Releases Stunning Acoustic Version of ‘Lose You To Love Me’

Róisín O releases her stunning  acoustic cover of Selena Gomez’ ‘Lose You To Love Me’ on Friday 10th July. Like so many artists, lockdown presented the opportunity to create and play around with songs, old and new.

“Lockdown has given me the opportunity to produce covers in new ways. I loved the sense of this Selena Gomez song, it reflected how lockdown made us look at ourselves again, even find ourselves in the things we’ve lost.”

While at home during lockdown in Dublin, Róisín shared a video of this cover from her home studio with her online followers. The reaction was huge and fans in their thousands requested for the track to be released.

Róisín is part of Irish Women in Harmony who’ve just had a No. 1 hit with their cover of ‘Dreams’ by The Cranberries. The song was playlisted on New Music Friday UK, Acoustic Covers and many more and was shared by acts like Picture This, Hozier and Laura Whitmore.

Second Single from BRIARS ‘Even Keel’ Out Now

BRIARS’ second single, ‘Even Keel’, released on July 1st, 2020 (on Unemployable Records) was recorded in Monique Studios, Cork, IE. The track, with it’s haunting hook hitting from the very top, is a strong follow up to the release of their debut single ‘There There’, which achieved airplay support from Cork’s 96FM, RedFM, Beat102-103 and RTE 2XM, Brighter than their inaugural release, ‘Even Keel’ is a nod to the follies of relationships and the impact that they leave.

BRIARS are a brand new Irish alternative folk act that sound like nobody else in the Irish scene. Their sound ranges from fragile subtlety, to raucous energy, visiting every stop along the way, always underlined with a signature twist that shows the real personality of the group.

At their core, BRIARS consists of two main writers, (Michael Grace & Paul O’Shea), but are joined in studio (as well as in a live setting) by some of Ireland’s finest musicians, often from contrasting backgrounds and styles. Drums, bass and keys/organ lay the foundation of the sound, sitting underneath an acoustic guitar, which is sometimes switched out for bouzouki or mandolin, taking a step in the direction of the accompanying melody instruments, such as fiddle, flute and whistle. All of this sits closely beneath up to three part vocal harmony, resulting in a refreshing contemporary sound, intertwined with traditional elements.
