The Coronas Release New Single ‘Light Me Up’

The Coronas’ thirteen-year journey has definitely been unique. With a handful of multi-platinum selling albums and a huge home fan-base, they were just about to embark on a six-month world tour when a certain unfortunately-named virus tried to spoil the party. Thankfully, the band are back with a new single, new album, rescheduled dates, and a point to prove.

‘Light Me Up’ is the new single from the forthcoming album True Love Waits co-written with True Tides frontman Cian McSweeney. The song is a celebration of enduring love, through the good times and bad. It flips from atmospheric to anthemic and builds to a boisterous, gospel finish featuring Cian on backing vocals. Lead singer Danny explains, “‘Light Me Up’ is about being grateful to have someone in your life who believes in you when you’re struggling with self-doubt. I suppose post-lockdown it’s become even more topical – how lucky we are to have loved ones to lean on when the world seems to be turning upside down!”

‘Light Me Up’ precedes the band’s highly anticipated album True Love Waits which is out on 31st July. True Love Waits marks the start of what is now more than a new chapter in the career of one of Ireland’s biggest, best-loved bands, it’s more like a whole new book.

A quartet for thirteen years, last summer The Coronas became a trio when guitarist Dave McPhillips unexpectedly left. Briefly they questioned whether to continue but instead of being defeated, the band grew to see it as an opportunity. ‘When we accepted that we weren’t going to be the same band without him, it was easier to let the songs lead us in ways we wouldn’t have thought of before,’ Danny explains.

‘Rather than replace Dave, we actually contemplated ditching guitars entirely. But instead we opened ourselves up to working with loads of our talented friends, mainly because the songs warranted it, and we had an amazing young producer George Murphy who knew exactly the kind of album we wanted to make.’

‘For the first time we used real brass, there are extra guest backing vocalists, guest guitar players and our first featured duet. From early on, the guys encouraged me to use my voice differently, pushing me to try something that I wouldn’t have done previously.’

Two songs had already been recorded in Los Angeles last February, with Hozier and PJ Harvey producer Rob Kirwan, when Danny, bassist Graham Knox, and drummer Conor Egan pressed reset. But the album only really began to take shape once a raft of new songs arrived. Key to the process was Danny’s coterie of new co-writers.

‘I co-wrote a little on the last two albums and loved it,’ says Danny. ‘This time I was up for anything. I took snippets of ideas to several musician mates, mostly around Dublin and Kerry, to see what we came up with and that’s how we hit on some of the new sounds and different song structures. When you’re five albums in, it can be difficult to write differently on your own – you instinctively return to the same patterns. With fresh input, you’re forced down new paths, and it’s

also great sharing that excitement in a room when you both know that there’s something special in the idea you’ve just created together.’

The title track ‘True Love Waits’ was also written with Cian MacSweeney, frontman of Cork-formed, Dublin-based trio True Tides, one of The Coronas’ favourite bands and their recent support act. Acoustic guitar and bright synths blend to create an atmosphere of dreamy optimism, while the lyrics – ‘fuck that, take a chance’ – could as easily apply to The Coronas’ new outlook as a new relationship. Much of the song is the band’s original demo, recorded DIY in Dublin, before being completed in London with producer George Murphy.

‘We’ve never kept so much of our demos before,’ says Danny, ‘but what’s great about George is he can see the magic in a moment. There’s a spontaneity to that song which we’d have lost by re-recording it. George engineered our last two albums, so he knows us very well. He’d hone in on the vibe of what we brought him. A lot of the songs had odd arrangements and he understood straight away what we were trying to do.’

The unorthodox arrangements helped push The Coronas out of their comfort zone. The release last year of hypnotic first single ‘Find The Water’ was a shock to some, but its success told the band they were on the right path. Beginning with just piano and vocals, then breaking into an intense chant, ‘Find The Water’ soars skywards on trumpets and percussion and has Danny singing so high by the end that he’s all but unrecognisable.

Previous single ‘Cold’ may rival it for surprises. Opening on its stark, prayer-like chorus, it’s a majestic spine-chiller that shapeshifts on piano, percussion and synths. Written by Danny as a pick-me-up late one night alone in Dingle, it’s about decision-making and self-doubt.”How do you know you’ve made the right choice, about anything,” says Danny. “In the midst of so much change, you can question every decision, but what’s the point? It’s our ‘don’t get down’ song. Have confidence and move on.

Lyrically, ‘True Love Waits’ addresses everything from a new love in Danny’s life, to looking back at past achievements with pride, to dealing with Dave’s departure.

‘Haunted’, one of two songs written with producer Cormac Butler, is a toast to a partnership – with the phrase “haunted” being Dingle-speak for “lucky”. ‘Lost In The Thick Of It’ is one of the album’s highlights, a gorgeous duet with Gabrielle Aplin, written in Brighton with Gabrielle and her partner Alfie Hudson-Taylor. On the celebratory ‘Brave’, The Coronas work in a waltz. The euphoric ‘Heat of The Moment’ they describe as their Richard Curtis love song. By the end of ‘I Think We Jinxed It’, the guitars and synths soar just much as Danny’s vocals.

We never thought we’d make six albums, or be as excited about music as we are now. It’s great that we’re not trying to compete with anyone else. We’d rather just outdo ourselves.”

Dublin Band Lavelle Announce Release of New Single

Dublin-based indie rock band Lavelle are this week announcing the release of their latest single ‘Moving To The Sea’ on all digital platforms.

The new release off their forthcoming album, ‘Moving To The Sea’ opens with measured grunge guitar layered on top of prominent piano chords and driven by rim shots on the drums, with the track ultimately exploding into a melodic and memorable chorus.

Together since 2014, three-piece Lavelle have spent the past two years in and out of Dublin’s Camden Recording Studios working on their debut album ‘Stem The Flow’ (scheduled for release in the autumn) with veteran Irish producer and sound engineer Conor Brady.

The band’s four-track EP ‘Feel Like I Do’ was released in April 2017, followed last year by ‘Something New’ – their first single off the album. Most recently they released the fast-paced summer song ‘Save Yourself’ and the mellow harmonic track ‘In The Light’.

Commenting on the theme of their latest release, Lavelle’s lead singer and songwriter John Ryan said: ‘The idea for the song came about while thinking of solitude and where it would be possible to completely switch off and be on your own.

‘Moving To The Sea’ is available on all digital platforms from 17th July.

SAIGE’s Post-Breakup Anthem ‘Late Nights’ is a Refreshing Classic

Wexford-born singer/songwriter SAIGE will be releasing her newest single, ‘Late Nights’ on July 17th. Saige’s unique brand of alternative-pop features a fine blend of dreamy sonance and introspective songwriting. ‘Late Nights’ explores themes of doubt and vulnerability, juxtaposed by a buoyant and infectious beat.

Discussing the release, Saige explains: “’Late Nights’ is about that initial thrill of a rebound to quash self-doubt after a breakup. You might regret it in the morning but that’s tomorrow’s problem, the ‘love comes down’.”

‘Late Nights’ follows the release of Saige’s two debut singles, ‘Soothe Me’ and ‘Ultraviolence’, both released earlier this year. Despite having just three tracks under her belt, Saige has already established herself as a force to be reckoned with within the industry.

Saige’s baroque pop sound is reminiscent of an artistic maturity far beyond her years. Combining rich, textural harmonies and a dreamy palette of synthesisers, Saige succeeds in capturing a vibrant and nostalgic sound in her work creating something that feels both modern and classic.

Saige is Ireland’s newest singer/songwriter launching onto the Irish music scene. Hailing from Wexford, the singer/songwriter studied vocals in BIMM and cut her teeth gigging Dublin’s music circuit while developing her unique sound. She describes her music as ‘the moodiness of the Alt-Pop I loved as a teen combined with my musical loves as an adult such as Hozier, Lykke Li, London Grammar and The XX.’ Saige’s bandmates include friends she grew up with, both at home and during college. All tracks are written and produced by Saige.

‘Late Nights’ is available on all online platforms from July 17th.

NEALO to Release ‘You Can’t Go Home Again’ feat Uly

On Friday 17th July, NEALO will release ‘You Can’t Go Home Again’ (featuring Uly) on Diffusion Lab.

‘You Can’t Go Home Again’ is the first single this year to be taken from NEALO’s much-anticipated debut album, due for release this autumn, and it signposts some key themes: emigration, transformation and friendship – all delivered in the Dubliner’s reflective, biographical style.

NEALO once again teams up with long-time collaborators and good friends Uly and Adam Garrett on this laid-back nostalgia trip, infused with the signature jazzy, lo-fi hip-hop style he has become known for.

NEALO says: “’You Can’t Go Home Again’ is about leaving. It’s a song about missing both a person that you love, and a city that you love. No one stands untouched by emigration. We have all left cities and friends behind, or have had friends leave in search of a better life, an adventure, or a future for themselves. This one is an ode to the people and cities that I had to leave behind, and that each time I left, I never felt like I was the same person after. Everything changes with the miles and years.”

‘You Can’t Go Home Again’ follows on from May’s single, ‘Heart Food For Hard Times’, which has amassed some 1 million radio impacts and received widespread critical praise with Earmilk remarking that “Nealo’s pen game is at a whole new level,” and District Magazine commenting that the lyrical content of the song “digs up past pain, with rolling commentary on the increasing erosion of culture in the capital.

The artwork images for ‘You Can’t Go Home Again’ were taken by photographer and film director Bobby Zithelo (Director of the wonderful film, ‘This Land’). Bobby is also directing the music video for ‘You Can’t Go Home Again’, to be released in the weeks following the single release. More on that later.

You Can’t Go Home Again is out on Friday 17th July 2020.

God Knows to Release First Track from ‘Who’s Asking? EP Vol. II’

This Friday 17th July, God Knows will release ‘We Move The Needle’ feat. MuRli and Bony.

The single is the first to be taken from the upcoming ‘Who’s Asking? EP Vol. II’, which will be released in August on Fly High Society.

The single, and accompanying video, featuring long-time collaborator MuRli as well as Cork MC Bony, will be available for download via Bandcamp only

God Knows says: “’We Move The Needle’ is a song I wrote in real time in response to everything that was going on in the world. I felt like I had to just step away and write some sick lyrics with some sick MCs – MuRli and Bony. What came to my heart was everything I was feeling in my spirit at the time and I let it go from there. The title for ‘We Move The Needle’ came about because, for so long, we have let other people lead the conversation in terms of music when it’s us – the MC, the DJ – we’re the ones who are supposed to lead the way. When it’s out of our hands, we’re just doing what other people ask us to do. We move the needle; nobody else does. We don’t have to go by anyone’s rules; we make our own rules.

The video for the track was filmed by Steve Hall in Cork just last week. It will be available exclusively on Bandcamp to people who purchase ‘We Move The Needle’.

“I wanted to give the people who love and support my music a little bit more,” says God Knows. “The essence of hip-hop was there with ‘We Move The Needle’ as a result of the art made by the lads in Cork as a response to what’s going on in the world. They made art and I happened to be in Cork that day with my people and we did the video – so everything with this record is in real-time. We don’t react. We move in real time.”

‘We Move The Needle’ heralds the release of ‘Who’s Asking? EP Vol. II’ – the follow-up to the first volume released on Liverpool-based label Fly High Society in February.

‘Who’s Asking? EP Vol. I’ was a groundbreaking project that saw God Knows bring together some of Ireland’s most exciting, influential and progressive hip hop artists including MuRli, Denise Chaila, Hazey Haze, Citrus Fresh, Gavin DaVinci and Strange Boy Nature.

The Quietus said of the project, “The Irish powerhouse invites an all-star cast of producers and guest MCs into the party for what proves to be his most assertive work to date.”

‘We Move The Needle’ will be available on Friday 17th July on Fly High Society via Bandcamp:  https://flyhighsociety.bandcamp.com/

IMRO Chief Executive Victor Finn said “In times of crisis we often turn to music creators and artists for their unique ability to interpret and reflect on the world in which we live. Klara McDonnell Announces New Single Release

Klara McDonnell, a face already well-known on the Irish independent music scene, found a wider audience earlier this year when she decided to let her social media following in on a very personal matter.

The Dublin-born singer and actress, shocked followers when she revealed she had been diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer, but instead of a pity party, Klara put the social back in media, and took to rapidly-growing social app Tik Tok to share her journey – from diagnosis through chemotherapy and surgery, which she finally completed last week.

She treated her hospital visits like social events, digging into her expansive wardrobe and selecting only the most dazzling outfits – and wigs! – and like any good night out, shared pictures and candid clips, resulting in a sort of ‘behind the scenes’ on steroids.

Her 8,000- strong TikTok following – as well as a considerable helping of followers on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram – lapped up the content, engaging with Klara’s infectiously upbeat personality. A notable percentage of those followers are women who’d also been diagnosed with the disease, and Klara has found herself an unlikely inspiration to those who felt less fierce in their battle.

2019 had been a busy year for Klara – she released three singles produced by Beardfire Music, including the original version of ‘Dusty Glitter’. The new remix, more effervescent and ambient than the Americana-tinged original, was produced by rising EDM artist Skynem GT from Peru. The pair met online through a mutual friend, Irish singer/songwriter Robert O’Connor and worked on the remix during lockdown.

The result is akin to something you might hear in a cocktail bar – sitting comfortably between the chillout and tropical EDM genres often favoured by the likes of Kygo. It’s new territory for Klara, though she’s not departing her hallmark sound, and is readying completely new material for future release.

I only shimmer, like dusty glitter,” Klara sings on the self-written track, but in truth, she dazzled when it really counted, and her new-found audience has seen nothing yet!

‘Dusty Glitter’ (Skynem GT Remix) is released on July 31 together with an animated music video by artist Trea Ivory.

New Video from Swimmers Jackson Ahead of Single Release

‘Birthday Girl’ – an unsentimental love letter to the big sound of the indie pop punk axis of the 90s – will be released this Friday, 17th July by Swimmers Jackson.

The video for the track, directed by Ryan Phillips, premiered on HotPress.com.

The song is the third single from ‘Murmuration’, Niall Jackson’s first full length album using his ‘Swimmers Jackson’ alias, which was released in early May of this year to critical acclaim, with The Irish Times commenting that it “strikes an easy balance between laidback and spirited while maintaining a sense of authenticity at every turn.”

‘Murmuration’ was chosen as ‘Album of the Week’ by RTÉ Radio 1 and PlayIrish Radio upon its release.

Niall says of this single, ‘Birthday Girl’: “The song was borne out of a little frustration on my part that a) nothing seemed to be moving for me, and b) I was really missing my bandmates – so I wanted to see if I could do this kind of song on my own.”

Playing solo around the UK and Ireland in between touring with his other bands Bouts and Sweat Threats, Swimmers Jackson was named as one of State Magazine’s ‘Faces of’ as well as one of ‘50 Things to Look forward to for 2020’ by The Point of Everything
