Bob Gallagher and Lankum win Best Irish Music Video at Irish Film Festival London

Irish filmmaker and visual artist Bob Gallagher has won the Best Irish Music Video Award for his work directing ‘The Young People‘ for the band Lankum, at the 2019 Irish Film Festival London. The video was originally premiered with a feature on the American music website Billboard. ‘The Young People’ explores body language, characterisation and how micro narratives can be gleaned from focusing on just people’s feet. Using a mix of documentary footage captured around Dublin City and a performance by the band, the video touches delicately on the theme of suicide, contrasted with the ephemeral movement of bodies through the city over the course of an autumn morning.

The award ceremony was hosted last week at the Irish Embassy in London. Bob also received a second nomination for his work with Junior Brother on the video for ‘Full of Wine‘. This is Bob’s second time winning the award at the London Irish Film Festival. In 2018 he received the Best Irish Music Video award for his work with Pillow Queens on the video for ‘Favourite‘. He was also nominated in 2018 for Villagers ‘Fool‘.

Bob was recently featured in the October edition of Totally Dublin Magazine as one of five leading Irish filmmakers working in the medium of music video. The article, which describes Bob as ‘One of the nation’s premiere creative forces in the visual arts‘ can be viewed here.

Gallagher has crafted award winning music videos collaborating with acts such as Girl Band, Villagers, SOAK, Lisa Hannigan, Pillow Queens, Junior Brother, Myles Manley and James Vincent McMorrow.  His recent video for ‘The Young People’ by Lankum is one of a series of videos he has been commissioned to make by renowned London label Rough Trade Records, which this year also included a collaboration with contemporary dancer Oona Doherty for Girl Band’s ‘Shoulderblades‘.

In 2017 Bob was hand picked to attend a ten day practical workshop in Cuba with Werner Herzog, after which he was declared by Herzog to be a ‘Good Soldier of Cinema’. The workshop resulted in two short documentary films currently on the festival circuit, ‘Salon’ and ‘The Impossible Flight of the Stone’.

Bob was invited earlier this year by Dublin City Council to stage a retrospective of his music video work titled ‘Under My Garage‘ at the Music Town Festival in Dublin. Taking the form of a fictional late night talk show, Under My Garage combined live music, visuals, and on-stage interviews centred around Bob’s music video work. The performance included appearances from Villagers’ Conor O’Brien, Girl Band, Pillow Queens, Ena Brennan, Participant, Cal Folger Day and Myles Manley. This year also saw Bob stage his first solo photography exhibition ‘Forced Perspectives‘ as part of an artist residency at The Darkroom, Dublin. which went on to feature in the Photo Ireland Festival. Bob was also invited to participate in the inaugural Fermanagh-Omagh District Council International Artist’s Residency, working with young people across loyalist and nationalist communities to create short film projects.

Bob is currently based in New York City where he is developing his first feature film script.

Aodán Coyne’s Solo Album Out This Friday

The release date for Aodán Coyne’s new solo album, ‘Gaps Between Stars’ is now just under a week away, Friday November 22nd. While currently on tour on the continent with his Socks In The Frying Pan buddies, Aodán will be back home in Ennis to celebrate the album’s arrival with an album launch celebration show at The Sanctuary, Ennis on the same night.

We have already had a taste of the album via singles ‘Chance And Gamble’, and more recently ‘Honey Wine’, both which set a fabulous tone for the long play due next Friday.

To record the album, Aodán teamed up with the same production team behind Emma Langford’s award winning album, ‘Quiet Giant’, Chris O’Brien and Graham Murphy at The Production Suite Dublin. This 2019 long-play follows Coyne’s acclaimed 2015 debut ‘If We Only Knew’.

Once he had the concept for his album, within six months it was written. The album was written on the outskirts of Ennis overlooking the lake of Ballyalla, a surge of scenic calm in the midst of the creator’s hectic schedule. “In retrospect, it was a crazy time for me, the band was in full swing and I really had no idea what to expect from trying out my own music. However, I think the fact I was going for a truly authentic sound and not being fake helped the process a lot.”

This time Coyne wanted to return to what he felt was always his first calling, being a singer-songwriter. “Just making the kind of music that I love. That sort of roots/singer-songwriter/folk thing, but with contemporary vibes and some experimental sounds. At the time I didn’t even know who, if anyone, would be interested. But I knew I just needed to record and get my music out.”

When at home Aodán frequently guests with his good friend Emma Langford, indeed he will again on return from his shows on the continent. Aodán also adds his musicianship to Emma’s pending new album.

Ennis born Aodán Coyne is a composer, songwriter, singer and producer. He is also a principal member of acclaimed folk band Socks In The Frying Pan, who has an enviable touring schedule particularly in the USA and on the continent. To decide then to release a solo album in parallel would be, to some, a non-enviable task! Not Aodán.

Other lives shows before end of November include:
Tuesday, November 19th – The Urban Co-op, Limerick (International men’s day)
Wednesday, November 20th – Bridge of Song, Bridge St. Bar, Mayo
Friday, November 22nd – The Sanctuary, Ennis, Clare (‘Gaps Between Stars’ Album Launch)
Thursday, November 28th – The Washerwoman, Ballina, Tipperary (With Emma Langford)

Lōwli Unveils Latest Single

Undeterred by losing her voice for several weeks, Lōwli captured her forthcoming release, ‘Worlds Above Us’, in a single live take at Camden Recording Studios last summer. Accompanied by Aisling Bridgeman (violin) and Rob Campbell (cello); the result is a fluid arrangement uninhibited by pretension, and layered in melodic nuances.

A playful piano line shepherds the song through a cinematic build, to elicit a response from a sparse, deliberate strings arrangement that personifies the ‘elegant pop-noir’ feel that Jim Carroll (Irish Times) found when he first listened to Lowli’s music.

‘Worlds Above Us’ is the work of a burgeoning songwriter in her element. Though Lōwli’s distinctive vocal is absent, the personality she has emanated as an artist up to now certainly is not. The indie pop hue of her debut EP ‘Feathers’ is not only complemented, but reinforced, by the classical and contemporary elements that ‘Worlds Above Us’ offers.

Inclusions on the Sounds From a Safe Harbour, Vantastival and Sofar Sounds lineups; resounding praise for her releases to date; and nods from several Ones to Watch listings are just the first steps in Lōwli’s journey: which is set to be an immensely exciting one.

‘Worlds Above Us’ is available on all streaming platforms now with an accompanying music video produced by Conor Dockery (Walking on Cars, Otherkin, Bitch Falcon).

Paddy Mulcahy Releases ‘How To Disappear’

‘How To Disappear’ is a 9 track album by Paddy Mulcahy. Written during the period when the 26 year-old composer was living in Montréal, taking inspiration from different spaces around the French-Canadian city and the pianist’s introduction to modular synthesizers.

This stunning piece of work intertwine’s solo piano and synthesizer compositions with jungle drumbeats and digital choirs – creating a moving, emotional and cinematic soundscape that immediately draws you into Paddy’s colorful story of his leaving Ireland, living in Montreal and his return to his native Limerick City.

The variety throughout the album is intended to reflect a somewhat bizarre 18-month journey; including all of the up’s and down’s, good and bad & everything in between.

As Mulcahy’s sound develops on from previous releases such as ‘The Words She Said’ and ‘From Water’ – we are reminded of how carefully he contrasts the piano against the synthesizer to create a unique and beguiling sonic universe.

‘How To Disappear’ is available on vinyl and digital release via Phases Records. Order your physical copies HERE.

Paddy Mulcahy is a Composer/Producer from Limerick City, Ireland.

Although classically trained in piano from the age of 5, Paddy soon sought out his own styles through his various experiments with electronic music in recent years.

In 2014, Paddy released a 4 track EP entitled ‘Memory Season’, followed by a piano performance at the launch of Nils Frahm’s ‘SHEETS EINS’ book.

In January of 2015, he played support to Lubomyr Melnyk on his first Irish performance.

That June saw the release of a new solo piano album entitled ‘Tape Sketches’, followed by an Irish summer tour, including a performance at Body & Soul Festival.

Paddy finished off 2015 by starting work on Eriú Dance Co’s ‘LÏNGER’, choreographed & written by Breandán De Geallaí.

In early 2016, he was approached by 1631 Recordings, who re-released the Tape Sketches album, followed by the release of a 5 track piano EP ‘twenty six’.

The rest of 2016 was spent working on new album recordings as part of the honors BSc in Music Production at Limerick Institute of Technology.

In between these personal projects, Paddy continued to provide music for international commercial adverts for companies like Deliveroo, MADE & Belstaff.

The composer’s music has featured at Cannes Film Festival, London Surf Film Festival, Newport Beach Festival, London Fashion Week & dozens of other events and venues.

Paddy’s album ‘How To Disappear’ is out now via Phases.

Jack Rua Releases ‘Rise’

Innovative pop artist Jack Rua is throwing innuendos out the window on his bold new dance-pop banger ‘Rise’, featuring Irish hip-hop artist Darce. Taking inspiration from EDM and house music, ‘Rise’ continues Jack’s lyrical themes of sexual liberation and self-empowerment, all over a sweetly produced track produced by Irish dance producer and musician Porridge.

Jack’s infectious pop hooks and summersaulting vocals mix seamlessly with Darce’s expeditious and raunchy rapping to create a grooving anthem that celebrates the healing powers of sex and love.

The song was released on November 15th and is available on all streaming platforms now, including on Spotify where it got added to the UK’s New Music Friday editorial playlist.

Stitched together from elements of glam; dance; folk and theatre, Jack Rua has developed a brand of music that can dance across the entire pop spectrum. Heavily influenced by the glamorously gaudy stylings of David Bowie; Lady Gaga; Prince and Madonna, Jack is carving a space for himself in the music industry where authenticity and depth can go hand in hand with artificiality and excess. His music, coupled with his visual work with fellow Dublin queer artist PureGrand, proves that Jack Rua is an artist with a unique sound and vision.

Orian Shares ‘Holding On’

‘Holding On’ is the second release from the Irish born, Berlin based independent artist Orian; a haunting and passionate offering co-written with internationally acclaimed songwriter Erik Alcock, who has written and released with international artists such as Celine Dion and Eminem, and co-produced by Truancy and Kalous Music. ‘Holding On’ is a delicate guitar melody driven, emotional and vocally powered track that showcases another side to the indie pop artist. Written during the summer of 2019, ‘Holding On’ finds Orian at his most raw and honest; which can be heard in the passionate vocal performance. An emotive track that touches off the idea of our struggles as human beings to find our place in an all consuming, stressed out world; and allowing ourselves to feel the worth that we all truly deserve to feel in order to find happiness, success and love.

Having performed as Joey Ryan for almost a decade, 2019 saw Ryan morph into Orian; a natural progression that reflected the songwriters move away from his folk and acoustic roots.

After independently releasing his debut single ‘Tryin’’ in May 2019, and achieving support from Irish radio stations such as RTE Radio One, BBC Ulster,  RED FM, BEAT 102103, KCLR, Dublin City FM and Shannonside, alongside support from Radio Eins and Fritz Radio in Germany, ‘Holding On’ is a strong and honest follow up to his first release, which has to date reached over 65,000 streams on Spotify, and is still climbing.

With influences ranging from The National to Bon Iver; Hozier to John Mayer; Orian is guitar melody-based, atmospheric melancholic pop; with strong, catchy toplines. After spending the last year touring Europe with bands such as Bastille, George Ezra and Jet, ‘Holding On’ will be supported by a single release full band show in Berlin on the 21st of November, followed up by a nationwide German Tour in early 2020, accompanied by a third single,  before the release of a four track EP in Autumn 2020.

‘Holding On’ is available on all streaming and online music store platforms now.

delush and Tolu Makay Share Collaboration

The Greatest Gift’ single was written and produced by delush (Enda Gallery) and features the incredible Afro-Irish soul singer Tolu Makay and the magnificent African Gospel Choir based in Dublin. It is available on all streaming platforms Friday 15th November 2019 via Welcome to the New World.

Speaking about this new single, Enda says “I’m not always in the position where everything makes sense. I often find myself in the period of doubt, the period of struggle or the period of not knowing if it will it all ever make sense again. I wanted to capture a moment of feeling that true freedom, that sense of everything in its right place, so that people can access it in more difficult times or celebrate it and feel it more deeply when it does come around, and it always comes around, sooner or later.”

This official video, created by COLLECTIVE DUBLIN, was made to showcase the universality of Love – the greatest gift. Filmed in Dublin, Ireland, it features over 100 people from all walks of life – Enda’s family, Tolu’s family, Free 2 Be Me Dance School (Dublin), diver Ciara McGing, aerlialist Nicola Moran and more –  all of whom are entirely themselves and loving themselves, no matter what their background is or challenges they have to face in the world.

“Opening with a soft, steady stream of glistening piano notes, “The Greatest Gift” is a tender and emotional ballad. Gallery is joined by Afro-Irish soul singer Tolü Makay whose wonderfully evocative, distinctive vocals are perfectly framed by Gallery’s minimal production… With the addition of the African Gospel Choir of Dublin the song ends on a fittingly uplifting, spiritual note.” – Pop Matters

After 4 years of producing, writing and collaborating with established artists in Berlin, Leixlip man Enda Gallery created his solo project ‘delush’ to share his own truest experiences and realisations (“but also just for the sheer fucking joy of it”).

In 2018, delush released ‘Don’t Let Me Win’ (“The type of song that wheedles its way into your life and never leaves.” – Cerys Matthews, BBC6 Music) and soon reconnected with Limerick, the birthplace of his musical journey, and its thriving hip-hop scene by collaborating with rapper Strange Boy on the follow-up single ‘It’s Alright’, which made rotation on RTE 2FM, Radio 1 in Germany, and the BBC Introducing Mixtape.

In spring 2019, he released his live EP – Live at Jazzanova Recording Studios.

delush is currently producing his debut album which is due to early 2020, and working with the Grammy-nominated producer Christian Rich (J. Cole, Mac Miller, Childish Gambino).

Hudson Taylor Share New Festive Single

Still glowing from the success of recent single ‘Back To You’, brothers Harry and Alfie Hudson-Taylor get ready to warm up winter with the release of a brand new Christmas song.

They say, “We never thought we’d be writing Christmas songs, but this one came along and well here we are! The song is about the little things that remind us of Christmas at home. There’s nothing quite like the holiday season in Ireland, there’s a buzz in the air and people seem to open up – memories are made.”

Recorded in America and Dublin with Grammy-nominated US producer John Rausch – best known for his work with Taylor Swift and Birdy – ‘How I Know It’s Christmas’ is that rare thing: a new Christmas song that feels like an instant festive classic.
