Unsigned Only Music Competition Seeks Entries

Unsigned Only is music competition designed for solo artists, bands, and singers all over the world who are not signed to a major label record company or any of its affiliates, subsidiaries, or imprints. The goal of Unsigned Only is to find an outstanding, talented performer: a band, singer, or solo artist…a newcomer or veteran…raw or polished – the “gem” that needs to be discovered. Unsigned Only is looking for the total package.

Conceived of and produced by the team who bring you the International Songwriting Competition (ISC), Unsigned Only is a fresh and novel approach to other music competitions. Yes, it offers great prizes, recognition, exposure, and the chance to be heard by a group of judges consisting of high-profile recording artists and industry professionals. But, Unsigned Only also takes it a step further and puts the Grand Prize winner in direct, personal contact with the influential record label executives who are the ultimate decision-makers. For the first time ever, a music competition offers the Grand Prize winner the unprecedented opportunity to be mentored by a group of record company presidents, A&R reps, and more.

Mentors include a group of high-profile record company executives including: Monte Lipman (President of Universal Republic); Pete Ganbarg (Executive VP/Head of A&R, Atlantic Records); Josh Bailey (Sr. VP of A&R, Word Label Group); Kim Stephens (President, Forward Entertainment and A&R/Capitol Music Group); Allison B. Jones (VP of A&R, Big Machine Label Group), and more to be announced.

The Grand Prize Winner will be awarded $10,000 in cash (plus additional prizes) and one-on-one mentoring by an elite group of record company executives. First Place and Second Place winners will also be selected in each category.

Bang – Valentino is Dead! | Alternative-rockers blast onto the scene with LA’s finest at the helm

EDGY and hard-hitting alternative rockers VALNETINO IS DEAD look set to emerge from virtual obscurity with a bang after teaming up with one of LA’s most prolific producers and engineers to mix their debut album.

Entitled, ‘Misadventures in Punk Rock’ the album was given a massive stadium rock sound by the team in LA whose list of clients include none other than Jimmy Page, Slash, Hole, Aerosmith and Red Hot Chili Peppers to name but a few.

VALNETINO IS DEAD comprises of two permanent members Gerard Bowe and Keith Smith who are no strangers to the Irish music scene having played together for years in their former band ‘The Keds’.

The album was officially released earlier this month and has already been picked up by Ian Dempsey who recommended the album to his listeners before giving it a spin on his show.

Despite the title, singer and guitarist Keith said this is not your typical punk rock album. He explained, “This album is more rock than punk in sound but where it lives up to its title is how it was created. Although it was mixed in LA to give it this huge sound it was actually recorded by us in our own home studio.”

“The punk rock ethos is all about doing things for yourself and that’s what we’ve done with this album and this new band from record the songs, to designing the artwork, to building the website and even having a big hand in creating the two music videos that accompany the album.”

Misadventures in Punk Rock is currently available from iTunes and on hardcopy from the band’s website www.valentinoisdead.com where you can also get a free download of the hard-hitting opening track ‘Up Your Anti’.

The album will get an official launch in Drogheda on 1st December with an afternoon in-store gig in HMV followed by a full set later that night in McPhails. The lads will also play Boyles in Slane on 6th December and a Dublin launch along with further shows is planned for early 2013.

IMRO Meets With Irish MEPs To Call On Support For Music Creators Worldwide

It is sometimes easy to lose sight of the very people who are at the heart of the creative process and whose interests are profoundly affected by legislation on intellectual property rights. Composers, songwriters and performing artists need freedom to create and live from their work; this freedom is crucial to maintaining our rich European cultural heritage.

With this in mind IMRO and The International Confederation of Music Publishers (ICMP) hosted a networking event in the European Parliament in Brussels on 13th November. The event was attended by Miriam Harkin MEP, Mairead McGuinness MEP, Liam Aylward MEP, Jim Higgins MEP, Gay Mitchell MEP and Pat The Cope Gallagher MEP.

The gathering provided a platform for music creators and their representative bodies to connect directly with European legislators to enable them to highlight the many challenges currently facing the creative community. IMRO Chairman, Keith Donald highlighted the lack of respect that is widely felt by many creative people in music, film, newspapers, literature and software because their work can now be so easily copied and stolen. He emphasised the need for regulation and a worldwide strategy that allows for technical innovation while not diminishing creators’ rights. The event concluded with a world premiere of a new work, which Keith Donald composed especially for the occasion.

Solidarity Songs | Young Songwriters Competition Launches in Kerry

Solidarity Songs is a national young songwriter competition jointly organised by Kerry One World Centre Tralee with KDYS and Clubheadbangbang. This year’s Other Voices Music Trail will feature artists performing at the Church and the IMRO Other Room, as well as many Irish acts including Daithi O’Dronai, Toy Soldier, Neon Wolf, Mick Heslin and In The Willows. Villagers | new song and video | Nothing Arrived

Villagers are to release ‘Nothing Arrived’ as the second single from their upcoming LP, {Awayland}, on the same day as the album – 11th January 2013. (The album will be released on 9th April 2013 in the US).

Nothing Arrived is a song of epic proportions and of much beauty, showcasing another side to the band’s multi-faceted, highly anticipated forthcoming album. The accompanying video, directed by Alden Volney (who also made the video for the previous single, The Waves), documents a day in the life of one Terrence Bliss – a lonely office worker whose repetitive existence is momentarily disturbed.

{Awayland} was produced and mixed at Attica Audio in Donegal by Conor J. O’Brien and Villagers’ guitarist Tommy McLaughlin, and is the follow-up to the band’s Mercury Award-nominated and Ivor Novello-winning debut, Becoming a Jackal. Villagers have just completed a UK and European tour as special guests to Grizzly Bear, as well as a handful of headline dates both here and in London.

Jerry Fish releases Free Download of ‘Back to Before’ in support of Carol Keogh’s Fundit campaign

Irish singer-songwriter Carol Keogh has launched a campaign on the Irish website Fundit to fund the recording and release of her debut solo album, Mongrel City. Her friend and collaborator Jerry Fish has decided to make his hit single Back to Before, a duet featuring Carol, available for download in support of her campaign. The track will be free to download for the limited period of one week from today.

Back to Before appeared on the 2009 album ‘The Beautiful Untrue’ by Jerry Fish and The Mudbug Club. People who like what they hear can help Carol make her debut album by visiting http://www.tinyurl.com/mongrelcity and pledging to pre-purchase her album and other great rewards. Her Mongrel City campaign ends on Sunday, 9th December.

Carol Keogh has been writing and performing since the mid-90s with bands such as The Plague Monkeys, The Tycho Brahe and Autamata, as well making notable guest appearances on recent albums by Jerry Fish and Sharon Shannon. For the past few years she has been developing the songs for her debut solo album, Mongrel City, many of which relate to her hometown of Dublin, the mongrel city of the album’s title.

On Monday, 15th October 2012, Carol Keogh launched a crowd-sourcing campaign on the Irish website Fundit.ie. The campaign, if successful, will realise Keogh’s long-held ambition to record her debut album, ‘Mongrel City’, with her backing band The City Fathers. Crowd-sourcing has become an increasingly viable way for artists to fund projects through pre-sales of work and other rewards.

As well as the opportunity to pre-purchase the finished album in several formats, Keogh’s reward packages include handwritten lyrics booklets, tailor-made cover versions, original oil paintings, private performances and acoustic renditions of songs from her back catalogue with previous bands. More information about Carol Keogh, the band and her visual art can be found on her official website.
