IMRO/MCPSI and YouTube Sign a Licensing Deal

Songwriters, Composers and the YouTube Community Benefit as IMRO/MCPSI Licence Agreed

IMRO/MCPSI and YouTube announced that they have signed a licence agreement that covers music included in videos streamed in Ireland via the online video platform. The licence covers the period until the end of 2012. As a result of the agreement the songwriters, composers and music publisher members that IMRO/MCPSI represents will be rewarded when their music is used.

“In the digital sphere where there have been few boundaries in the widespread distribution of music content in recent years the essential role that music creators provide in the value chain together with their underlying rights are important factors that have been very often overlooked and undervalued. IMRO/MCPSI is pleased to have signed this agreement with YouTube as it ensures that music creators rights are protected and that end users will continue to have access to the plethora of music content available on the YouTube service here in Ireland. We are happy to work in partnership with YouTube to ensure that the music creators that we represent continue to benefit from this successful online service”. Victor Finn, Chief Executive IMRO.

Donagh O’Malley, YouTube said: “We’ve been working hard to forge relationships that allow YouTube users to enjoy their favourite songs and discover new music on the site. We are extremely pleased to have reached an agreement with IMRO/MCPSI to help their members earn revenue and to enable new musical talents to emerge”.

Ergodos Festival MMX

The Ergodos Festival, sponsored by IMRO, takes place at the Project Arts Centre, Dublin on Friday 2 April and Saturday 3 April.

This year, the Ergodos Festival is all about optimism. The industry of men and women – their ability to make something – is an essentially positive force.

‘One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh, but the earth abideth forever.’ These words are millennia old, but they thread this festival, framing the first concert and permeating the second.

Another Generation, at 8pm on the 2nd of April, connects two distant ages, Baroque and modern. Performed by the Ergodos Orchestra, the programme finds roots in tradition, yet embraces a vision of new possibility. Solos and ensemble pieces by John Cage, Alexander Harker, Simon O’Connor, Jonathan Nangle and Garrett Sholdice resonate with J. S. Bach’s elegiac chorale prelude, Ich ruf zu dir, in four new arrangements.

At 8pm on the 3rd of April the premiere performance of The Sun Also Rises takes place, a work of film and music whose characters find strength in nostalgia, love and the eternity of nature, despite their desolation. The Ergodos Orchestra is joined by Ergodos Voices to perform the 70-minute score by Benedict Schlepper-Connolly. Archival Super-8 footage augments specially commissioned films by David Tynan.

Tickets (€15/€10 per concert) are available from the Project Arts Centre box office (http://projectartscentre.ie, +353 (0)1 881 9613).

Curated by Garrett Sholdice and Benedict Schlepper-Connolly, the festival will feature some of the most exciting and radically eclectic instrumentalists and singers working in Ireland and Europe today. The Ergodos Orchestra will feature pianist Izumi Kimura, violinist Ioana Petcu-Colan, violist Cora Venus Lunny, cellist Kate Ellis and clarinetist Jonathan Sage. Ergodos Voices, returning to Dublin following their critically-acclaimed debut at the National Concert Hall in December, will feature alto Nora Ryan, mezzo-soprano Michelle O'Rourke and soprano Peyee Chen.

Girls Names – Formed in January 2009 with their first gig booked before even playing together,  Belfast 's Girls Names unabashedly hark back to the early/mid eighties shadow world of Beat Happening, Black Tambourine, Felt, C86 and the Sound of Young Scotland. In their short existence they have quickly honed their craft in creating their own self-styled “disposable noise pop”, masking subdued bittersweet vocals and melodic hooks with reverb drenched guitars and Mary Chain primal drums.

Having sold out of their debut home taped demos on Cass/Flick (Belfast) last summer and after a string of support slots with the likes of Sic Alps, Wavves, Times New Viking, Lovvers and Gary War, Girls Names are set for their first release 'proper', with a 12" EP on Brooklyn’s much talked about Captured Tracks label and a full UK tour with label buddies, La La Vasquez in the spring.

Expect more releases in the upcoming months through Cass/Flick and Tough Love Records ( London ) and a debut album in the offing before the year is out.

La La Vasquez "Get on the party train with La La Vasquez. After playing their first show at Upset The Rhythm's Yes Way last year they've run riot in in sweaty rooms up [and sometimes down] the UK matching laid-back vocal harmonies with wicked shouts. Now they're moving on from their savage days with a melodic set of fuzzy jams that are a must hear in 2010. Au Pairs, Young Marble Giants, Bikini Kill, K Records… whatever, they love that stuff but they're on their own track. Don't miss their 7" released on Captured Tracks this month, "Don't Rush Me" on the Paradise Vendors/ Italian Beach Babes Compilation and their show at the NQ Trof. Going to be 3 Parts girl, 2 Parts beer, 1 Part Cider, all rulin'."

Temple Bar lights the flame for Trad Night by Candlelight

On Monday 22nd March, in The Oliver St. John Gogarty's Bar in Temple Bar the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, John Gormley T.D alongside RTE radio presenter & leading Trad musician Kieran Hanrahan officially launched Trad Night by Candlelight – a new initiative as part of Earth Hour 2010.

Last year 4,000 cities and towns in 88 countries across the world- the greatest mass participation event in history took place, when over one billion people turned off their lights for one hour to highlight climate change.  This year the Minister announced an new initiative – Trad Night by Candlelight – which will be a centre piece of this year's Earth Hour in Ireland where pubs and clubs throughout the country on March 27th will be asked to turn their lights off for at least an hour and celebrate Earth Hour in an uniquely Irish way with a traditional seisiún at 8.30pm.

At the reception the McVeigh sisters Roz, Joanne and Katherine performed a seisiún in one of Temple Bar's most established pubs, The Oliver St John Gogarty.

Speaking at the launch the Minister John Gormley said "At 8.30pm on March 28th, I'm hoping that people will not only turn off their lights for an hour. I hope people will make a decision to make a permanent change. The key message is that people make the difference at home, at work and at play and if sufficient numbers want to change their own attitudes and behaviour and lead more environmentally sustainable lives, then the challenge of climate change can be met together as a community and as a society." Minister Gormley pointed out that "there are Earth Hour picnics being organised in South Africa, pub quizzes in the UK and organic banquets in Australia, so I am delighted that Ireland will be marking Earth Hour in its own unique way with this trad night by candle light celebration." "Earth Hour is a symbol of the power we have to make a difference. Through one simple action, turning off our lights for one hour, we can deliver a powerful message about the need to reduce our carbon footprint and show the world that Ireland cares and wants to play its part in tackling climate change."

Every January Temple Bar plays host to the Temple Bar Trad Festival one of Irelands largest growing festivals which is organized by the Temple Bar Traders association TASCQ.  This festival which was voted best Trad Festival in 2008 & 2009 is programmed by RTE Radio presenter, Mr Kieran Hanrahan.

Temple Bar Traders today welcomed the initiative and already the following pubs in Temple Bar have confirmed that they will be taking part in Trad by Candlelight on the 27th March from 8.30pm – 9.30pm: The Auld Dubliner, Farringtons, Oliver St. John Gogartys, Vat House, Temple Bar Pub, Porter House, The Arlington, The Quays, The Morgan Hotel, The Foggy Dew and the Palace Bar.

GENERAL FIASCO | Buildings | The Debut Album | Out 19th March

General Fiasco are a feisty Northern Irish trio comprising of Owen Strathern on lead vocals and bass, his brother Enda Strathern on lead guitar and vocals and their friend Stephen Leacock on drums.

Their debut album ‘Buildings’ due to be released this Friday 19th March 2010 reflects the frustration felt watching friends succumb to alcohol and doing nothing to better their lives. “It’s all quite upbeat, poppy and rocky but the contents are all pretty bleak,” says Owen, “It was being aware of everybody wrecking themselves and not realising it. I’m sure everyone has something they really want to strive for, something they really want to achieve and it’s the frustration of not being fit to achieve it yourself and watching people not even try.”

By the age of eighteen Owen had been playing bass with another act for a few years, occasionally gigging at their home town Magherafelt’s sole rock bar with his younger brother Enda on guitar. The local scene was big on talk, small on walk; everyone dreamed of getting out of Northern Ireland, but nobody knew how.

Owen put off university in 2006 and dedicated a year to becoming a rock star, writing songs with enough weight and velocity to power their way out of Magherafelt’s cultural black hole. He roped in his brother and schoolmate Stephen and in 2007 General Fiasco moved to Belfast. Their first gig as a three-piece was at Glasgowbury 2007, Northern Ireland’s biggest unsigned music festival. A demo in the summer of 2008 landed them a spot on the BBC Introducing Stage at that year’s Reading & Leeds festival. Their first single ‘Rebel Get By’ was released in November 2008 and their second single ‘Something Sometime’ became Zane Lowe’s ‘Hottest Record In The World’. They signed to Infectious Records that summer.

In the past twelve months they’ve played the BBC Electric Proms; supported Snow Patrol, Fighting with Wire, The Pigeon Detectives, The Answer and The Enemy amongst others; and embarked on their own headline tour in the UK.

Buildings releases Friday 19th March on Infectious with the lead single, Ever So Shy, out now.

Bill Whelan Extends International Music Bursary For An Additional Year

Applications are currently being sought for the next round of The Bill Whelan International Music Bursary. The Bursary programme which was established in 2005 to support Irish music students studying abroad has already assisted a number of students from different disciplines ranging from film scoring, orchestration and music composition to continue their studies in the UK, USA and Germany. The bursary scheme is administered with the assistance of The Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO).

The very high costs associated with studying at prominent international music institutions raises significant obstacles for most Irish students offered places at such universities. The introduction of this award eases the burden significantly. Ongoing support and mentoring from the bursary selection team means that students are in a prime position to maximise their study and networking opportunities.

“As we head into year six, I am delighted to note the progress in the work and careers of the recipients to date and would encourage any students to come forward for the 2010 awards” outlined Bill Whelan at the announcement of bursary deadlines for 2010.

“Receiving the financial support which enabled me to study Screen Composition at the Royal College of Music in London in 2006 was just one of the incredible privileges that came my way through being a Bill Whelan Bursary recipient. Along with the respect that has come from being supported by Bill, I can barely describe the extent to which his sustained encouragement and enthusiasm has accelerated my career and personal development as a composer, both at and away from my writing desk. Having studied and worked alongside so many ’emerging’ composers also fighting for successful careers, I am constantly aware of the gift the Bill Whelan Bursary has been to me, and have yet to hear of a funding scheme that can offer anything comparable” added bursary recipient Anna Rice.

Bill Whelan, best known as composer of Riverdance The Show, a Grammy Award winner for ‘Best Musical Show Album’, has worked extensively in theatre, television and film. His orchestral works include the specially commissioned piece, The Seville Suite (1992) and The Spirit Of Mayo (1993). His work in international film includes Lamb which he co-composed with Van Morrison, his emotive score for the Jim Sheridan/Terry George film Some Mother’s Son and the original score for the film version of Brian Friel’s award winning Dancing At Lughnasa which starred Meryl Streep. His production and arranging credits include U2, Van Morrison, Kate Bush, Richard Harris and The Dubliners.

In August 2009 Glyder opened for Metallica in Marlay Park Dublin. The four piece band still have three members in their mid twenties have the musicianship and songwriting chops to match to bring their classic rock sound to audiences all over the world.  The third album now ready to be released has stunning Mark Wilkinson artwork and a guest solo on the title track by one of rocks finest guitarists Dave Meniketti from Y&T.
Glyder release their third album “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” on SPV. A&R Olly Hahn: "With Glyder we signed one of the finest rock bands from Ireland. They rock, they have catchy melodies and they play live their asses off. What more can you ask for!"

Reviews for their last album "Playground For Life"

“With a solid twin guitar attack ripping out the harmonies with aplomb and more swagger than Clint Eastwood….the same stadium gallop and romantic nuances that Lizzy exuded with glorious result”. – Classic Rock Magazine
"An eight-legged gift from classic rock heaven, Glyder emerged fully-formed with their superb debut album a couple of years ago…., the follow-up is an album of great songs, great performances and, most importantly, great spirit.- Metal Hammer
“Smothered with sublime harmonies and delivered with grit and precision” KKKK Kerrang
"There’s a reason they call it classic rock and the riffs of opener "Gamblers Blues" and the eerie atmospherics of the title track are just two examples of how songwriting will always outlive trends" – Rock Sound Magazine
“The quality of the songwriting really does separate Glyder from the vast majority of up and coming acts that would be viewed as their peers, which augers extremely well for their future”HARDROCKHOUSE.COM
