KÍLA announce the release of their 2nd single ‘Cara Liom’ from their upcoming album featuring The Paul Frost Brass Ensemble.
The single launch coincides with their forthcoming headline performance at this year’s ST. PATRICK’S FESTIVAL 2023 in Collin’s Barracks, Dublin.
“Witnessing this 16 piece at full throttle is something of a sonic celebration. Paul Frost’s arrangements fuses funk, mambo and New Orleans jazz to Kíla’s compositions, adding an even bigger sizzle to their already cracking tracks. Prepare to have your toes tickled, your hips wiggled and be danced into a euphoric state because this is the brassiest rhythm and tunes you’re ever likely to hear”.
The idea was concieved by founding member Rossa Ó Snodaigh who sourced funding from Liatroim Live Performance scheme in 2021, with a view to perform a New Year’s musical spectacular in the Glens Arts Centre in Liatroim. The last live concert Kíla played before Lockdown was at the Folk Alliance Festival in New Orleans and having been exposed to the street performers’ brass band sound he imagined what this might sound like with the band’s music. The fund gave him the opportunity to commission the trombonist and brass arranger Paul Frost to apply his magic to Kíla’s music. While the band have included brass on various tracks over the years, an eight piece ensemble would be a brand new venture, not only for Kíla but for Irish music itself. But Covid Lockdown that Christmas nearly caused the performance to be canceled. To save the show they had to cancel the audience, and instead scheduled a live broadcast allowing anyone with wifi to tune in.
The concert was a roaring success with audiences in countries all over the world dancing in their living rooms and sending platitudes over Twitter. Nine months later they performed it again at Dún Laoghaire’s Pavilion Theatre. This prompted them to record these tracks and release ‘Raise the Road’ their first single with the Paul Frost Brass ensemble in January to coincide with TradFest’s annual Féile Kíla in the National Stadium and now their 2nd Cara Liom on Lá ‘le Pádraig our Patron Saint’s day for St. Patrick’s Festival.
