Sounds from a Safe Harbour Festival 2023 adds five shows to their stellar line-up with LA Force; Cormac Begley, Kate Ellis, Romain Bly, and Caimin Gilmore; Anna B Savage + Brìghde Chaimbeul; INNI x Fischer: Afternoon of Scent and Music; and The Vernon Spring presents ‘Earth, on a Good Day’ with special guests.
Sounds from a Safe Harbour Festival (SFSH), renowned for its eclectic and ground-breaking programming, announce additional names to their extraordinary line-up of artists for the highly anticipated 2023 edition, taking place from 7th – 10th September in various venues across Cork City. Curated by Festival Director Mary Hickson, Bryce and Aaron Dessner of The National, actor Cillian Murphy and playwright Enda Walsh, SFSH will be an unmissable four days of music, dance, literature, theatre, and conversation, with lots of ticketed and free events to explore.
Newly added shows include:
- LA Force, 10pm, Friday 8th September, at the Pavilion.
LA Force, aka Ariel Engle, returns to Cork after her sold out show at SFSH19. Since then, she has been further involved in the 37d03d collective participating in the HIVER event in Eaux Caire (directed by Mary Hickson), and following that she features on Aaron Dessner and Justin Vernon’s Big Red Machine project. Commencing her tour at SFSH23, LA Force will present her much anticipated new album XO Skeleton, which is scheduled for release in September.
- A new collaboration between Cormac Begley | Romain Bly | Kate Ellis | Caimin Gilmore
Commissioned by Quiet Lights and presented in partnership with Sounds from A Safe Harbour Festival 2023. 2pm, Saturday 9th September at Live at St Luke’s.
In 2019, Traditional Irish concertina player, Cormac Begley, & Contemporary Classical double bassist, Caimin Gilmore, met after his performance of new works for double bass at Quiet Lights Music Festival. They were both eager to explore the possibilities for harmony & diffusion between both their musical worlds. In 2021, Quiet Lights commissioned them along with, cellist, Kate Ellis, & brass player / percussionist, Romain Bly, to collaborate on a new 40-minute cross-genre set for the festival. Sounds from a Safe Harbour festival is thrilled to partner with Quiet Lights in presenting the premiere of this new work.
The project seeks to highlight the similarities in experimentalism and wildness inherent in both genres, while creating an arrangement that fundamentally respects the tradition, and derives its composition from the music Begley performs, and how he plays it. The musicians are current collaborators with a wide range of traditional and folk musicians including John Francis Flynn, Martin Hayes, Lisa O’Neill, and Ye Vagabonds. Bly & Gilmore are currently working together with Begley as part of s t a r g a z e & Teac Damsa’s dance piece, Mám.

Acclaimed Artists Anna B Savage and Brìghde Chaimbeul unite for a mesmerizing double bill at Live at St. Luke’s, as part of Sounds from a Safe Harbour Festival
Anna B Savage, known for her soulful and emotive songwriting, has captured hearts and garnered critical acclaim with her uniquely raw and honest sound. Her deeply moving lyrics and powerful vocals have made her one of the most captivating voices in the contemporary music scene.
Brìghde Chaimbeul, a virtuoso piper and multi-instrumentalist, has earned widespread recognition for her mastery of the Scottish smallpipes. Her innovative and dynamic approach to traditional music has redefined the boundaries of the genre, captivating audiences worldwide.
- INNI & Fischersund: An Afternoon of Scent & Music, 12 noon, Sunday 10th September, the Pavilion
Experience the creative collaboration between two of Iceland’s most innovative brands – Fischersund, an Icelandic perfumery and art collective, and INNI, a renowned record label, studio, and publisher, who present an afternoon of captivating art, live music, and enchanting scents.

- The Vernon Spring presents Earth, on a Good Day, with special guests. 2pm, Sunday 10th September, Live at St. Luke’s
After many years recording and performing with a string of musical talents including Amy Winehouse, Kano, Gabriels, Joy Crookes and MF DOOM, London-based composer and producer Sam Beste embarked on his debut solo adventures as The Vernon Spring in 2021. Described by Radio 1’s Benji B as ‘an amazing record’, debut album A Plane Over Woods has been making gentle yet seismic waves and was recently followed by What’s Going On ~ an ambitious and audacious response to the seminal Marvin Gaye album of the same name.
Sam’s playing and composition style are multifaceted – an inevitable truth, given his wealth of experience – and yet there is cohesion and integration. You could draw parallels to the delicate muted piano of Nils Frahm, the gospel-inflected melancholy of James Blake, the sophisticated song writing of Joni Mitchell, or the feel of Donny Hathaway. But Sam Beste does not rely on influences. It is a singular and unique expression, tied tightly to the innate musicality of a hugely talented songwriter and producer.
Sam has been invited to create a festival specific edition of Earth, On a Good Day with some of the artists that will feature on the SFSH/37d03d residency, which is soon to be announced.
These names join previously announced shows: Kara Jackson, Indigo Sparke, Memorial, and Crash Ensemble with Diamanda La Berge Dramm, Feist’s Multitudes; the European premiere of Bonny Light Horseman with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra; Wilco, with support from Anna Mieke; and Ye Vagabonds’ Lighthouse Constellations. SFSH along with Teaċ Daṁsa and The Gate Theatre also bring the highly acclaimed ‘How to Be a Dancer in Seventy-two Thousand Easy Lessons’ to The Everyman.
