Ergodos Festival MMX
The Ergodos Festival, sponsored by IMRO, takes place at the Project Arts Centre, Dublin on Friday 2 April and Saturday 3 April.
‘One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh, but the earth abideth forever.’ These words are millennia old, but they thread this festival, framing the first concert and permeating the second.
Another Generation, at 8pm on the 2nd of April, connects two distant ages, Baroque and modern. Performed by the Ergodos Orchestra, the programme finds roots in tradition, yet embraces a vision of new possibility. Solos and ensemble pieces by John Cage, Alexander Harker, Simon O’Connor, Jonathan Nangle and Garrett Sholdice resonate with J. S. Bach’s elegiac chorale prelude, Ich ruf zu dir, in four new arrangements.
At 8pm on the 3rd of April the premiere performance of The Sun Also Rises takes place, a work of film and music whose characters find strength in nostalgia, love and the eternity of nature, despite their desolation. The Ergodos Orchestra is joined by Ergodos Voices to perform the 70-minute score by Benedict Schlepper-Connolly. Archival Super-8 footage augments specially commissioned films by David Tynan.
Curated by Garrett Sholdice and Benedict Schlepper-Connolly, the festival will feature some of the most exciting and radically eclectic instrumentalists and singers working in Ireland and Europe today. The Ergodos Orchestra will feature pianist Izumi Kimura, violinist Ioana Petcu-Colan, violist Cora Venus Lunny, cellist Kate Ellis and clarinetist Jonathan Sage. Ergodos Voices, returning to Dublin following their critically-acclaimed debut at the National Concert Hall in December, will feature alto Nora Ryan, mezzo-soprano Michelle O'Rourke and soprano Peyee Chen.
