Curtis Walsh Collaborates with Anna Pancaldi for the Powerful New Single ‘Bend’

Following on from an array of bright and euphoric singles including ‘Until I Fall’, ‘God Only Knows’, ‘Killing Me Softly’, ‘Midnight’, and ‘Almost The Same’ throughout last year, fast-rising singer and songwriter Curtis Walsh has now returned to deliver his first offering of 2021, the powerful ballad ‘Bend’, out on February 25th through Paragon Records.

Teaming up with fellow vocalist Anna Pancaldi for the release, ‘Bend’ sees the two artists deliver a warm and heartfelt release that oozes rich and sweeping emotion. Layered amongst a supple and sweetly played piano and echoed percussion throughout, the two singers take it in turns to swoon and croon their way through this intoxicating new serenade.

Speaking about the new song, Curtis said, “I really enjoyed working on this track with Anna during lockdown. It was a very chilled approach despite writing it over video chat. Anna  and I could both relate to the feeling of realising something has to change in a relationship but also being fearful of that change at the same time. So we tried to capture that emotion in this song.”

While Anna adds, “Writing and releasing this song with Curtis during lockdown was such a treat. We wanted to encapsulate the feeling of giving your every part to someone/something but coming to a realization that stepping back can at times be the most honest offering to you both when it’s no longer working.”

Since his early childhood, Curtis Walsh has been immersed in music. Growing up in the suburbs of Dublin, artists such as U2, Oasis, and Adele became the soundtrack to his earliest years, slowly impacting the way in which he would grow to love and appreciate music. But it wasn’t until his discovery of Ed Sheeran that his inspiration was truly awakened and he began to write music for himself.

But things weren’t always that easy. Having a harder and more troubled childhood than most, Curtis’ musical ambitions were sometimes derailed by his personal life, leading sometimes to focus more on survival than his musical career. But it was his label that helped carry him through the tougher times in his life. They were there to make sure he finished school after almost dropping out at sixteen, and they also convinced him to sit his Leaving Cert.

After finishing school, Curtis was more than ready to hurl himself into the music industry with everything he had, releasing his debut single ‘Full Recovery’ just one month later. The track itself reflected the world in which he had grown up in. Written when he was fifteen about one of his close friends, it became an emotionally wrought offering that earned him more than one million streams on Spotify and praise from the likes of Clash Magazine.

From there, he released his debut EP ‘Breathe’ in May 2019, which has garnered more than 15 million streams to date and showcased him as a far more matured artist as well. Rather than just writing simply structured songs, acts like Bon Iver and Jon Hopkins opened his mind to the possibilities of where he could take his music and become something bigger and more adventurous than most.

Throughout the COVID pandemic, Curtis decided to take the opportunity with both hands to figure out the kind of artist he wanted to be. With little to no influence or inspiration from the outside world, and no live shows to trigger his creative juices, he began to focus more on his own style and sound. Swapping personal stories for more existential questions about life and its meanings, he felt that the lockdown had served as a positive time for self-reflection and a chance for him to explore new ideas and avenues within his direction.

And while the lockdowns have shifted his focus on the artist he wants to be, his drive and ambition remains relentlessly unchanged. Curtis Walsh is looking to become even more adventurous and prolific in the coming years, with a more reassured feel as to who he is and wants to be seen as.

Anna Pancaldi is a London based singer-songwriter influenced by the likes of Joni Mitchell, Jeff Buckley and Carol King proves  a rare talent and someone to remember with her mature, deep, diverse vocals and thought-provoking  music.

With three Top Ten’s in the singer songwriter iTunes charts, Anna has gone on to tour in the UK, Europe  and the US, opening for the likes of David Ryan Harris (John Mayer’s guitarist), Jake Isaac and Fatai, as  well as headline shows in NYC, LA and Nashville.

Anna has performed on CBS LA TV, had her music featured on hit US TV shows such as ‘Pretty Little Liars’, ‘Famous in Love’ and also featured in and soundtracked a Levi’s campaign amongst others. Anna has had the support of Radio 1, 2, BBC 6 Music and BBC Introducing and over 2.5 million  streams on Spotify having featured in playlists such as ‘Easy’, New Music Friday’ and ‘Most Beautiful  Songs in the World’.

Anna is currently working on a full length album and working on various sync projects after the release of  three EP’s and her brand new single written in LA titled ‘How Do I Live With The Blue’ is out now!

ANDI Shares ‘Housewife’ Video

‘Housewife’ is the first single from ANDI’s upcoming EP ‘Cedar Ward’.

“‘Housewife’ is a song laden with drama. The song focuses on a feeling of despair and a desperate need to escape the mundane boredom of every routine. It touches on mental health, societal expectations of women, and generally feeling low.” – Amy Kelly

Amy Kelly cut her teeth fronting Dublin act ‘The Stoney Brokes’ and providing backing vocals for a number of acts in Ireland including ‘The Hot Sprockets’, ‘This Other Kingdom’ & ‘Vernon Jane’.

ANDI is the most recent project from Amy in which she steps out into the spotlight. Amy is a performer and ANDI showcases not just her presence as a live act but also her skill as a songwriter.

ANDI started as an acoustic 2-piece and initially developed into a full band for a performance at Knockanstockan Music Festival in 2019.

A stream of shows later that year lead to the recording of ANDI’s debut single, ‘Hermit’. ‘Hermit’ took influence from Tame Impala, The Pixies, Jeff Buckley & Elliot Smith. It was featured in Nialler 9, Hotpress, The Last Mixtape, it was featured on a number of Spotify Playlists and received national radio airplay.

Fears Announces Details of Her Highly Anticipated Album and Shares Second Single

This is the second single from ‘Oíche’.

Fears writes about ‘vines’: “This track was written before a breakdown. It chronicles a stage where one blames themselves, and sees that it is only them that is the problem in a situation. Listening back, I hear myself drowning in confusion as to why I can’t control my feelings, and want to shed those thought patterns.

Fears first single ‘tonnta’ received staggering support at radio in Ireland and internationally with plays on KCRW, NTS, Triple R in Australia, Tom Ravenscroft at BBC6 Music, added to RTÉ Radio 1 playlist, added to BBC Radio Ulster playlist. Support also came from RTÉ 2FM, Newstalk, Play Irish, Cork’s 96FM, Flirt FM, RTÉ 2XM, 98FM, KCLR 96FM, Raidió Na Life, Near FM, West Limerick 102 FM.

‘Tonnta’ was added to i-D Magazine’s Best New Music playlist, Nialler9’s Best New Irish Music playlist, New Music Friday Colombia, XL Recordings playlist and Get In Her Ears.

The video for ‘vines’ carries on where ‘tonnta’ left us. ‘Vines’ documents the journey from being lost at sea, washed away by the weight of blame, trauma, and rumination, to a Megalithic portal tomb – Ballybrack Dolmen, built circa 2500 BC, arriving at sunrise.

Fears explains: “This place holds particular significance to me as somewhere to offload weight, as my family and I go to this dolmen each Winter Solstice, write down something we want to let go of from the previous year, and burn it. As the sun rises, the longest night of the year ends, and you look forward to longer days and a fresh perspective. The rock I am carrying is granite, the main type of rock occurring in the Dublin and Wicklow Mountains, representing grief held in the land and physical space.”

Contemporary Harpist BRÍDÍN Shares New EP ‘Ocean Of Stars’

“I’m so excited to have this EP out, as I’ve been working on it for a while now getting it right. I’ve met so many incredible musicians along the way that I’m lucky to have worked with on my music. I couldn’t be more pleased with the result! From hearing them in my head as an idea, to watching them grow was magic and so exciting. I hope ‘Ocean of Stars EP’ can bring some happiness and calm to people in such a challenging time.” – BRÍDÍN

West Co. Sligo native, BRÍDÍN, carries on the traditions of unique skills and talents passed down through her family. She is fourth generation of her family to play Irish music and plays harp, flute, piano, and dances sean nós. And by day, BRÍDÍN, works as a full time funeral director and embalmer, taking after her father David McGowan, of RTE documentary fame.

“I’ve always been involved in funerals, working full time in it, it has completely changed my outlook on life. I see sadness every day and people going through the most horrible time. There are tragic funerals and you have to stay strong, and hold it together. When the funerals over and I go home that night I erupt. I gravitate towards my harp and write my music, which I find is a huge relief and escape” BRÍDÍN says.

BRÍDÍN has developed her own style influenced by her natural surroundings and rooted in her background in traditional Irish music. Her contemporary folk EP titled ‘Ocean of Stars’ is out now on all digital platforms. It is a collection of five tracks, ‘Wysteria’, ‘Floating’, ‘North West’, ‘Ocean of Stars’ and ‘The Salmon’s Tale, featuring Colm Mac Con Iomaire’.

Also featured on the EP are the boundless talents of band members: Clare Sands, Jake Curran, Paul Leonard, Brian Dillon (Meltybrains?), and Jack Selby-Smith.

Speaking about the songs featured Brídín says “’Wysteria’ is one of my favourite tracks, it opens up your imagination instantly and can bring you on a vivid journey. ‘Wysteria’ is an instrumental piece which you can find a beautiful music video we made for it on Youtube and Facebook of me and some colourful smoke bombs down lough Easkey bog, Co. Sligo. ‘Wysteria’ is calming and blissful.

‘Floating’ is my fun/dancy track which hypnotically sucks you into the groove. I wrote this song on the beach one holiday, it reminds me to stop and take a minute for myself.

The title track, ‘Ocean of Stars’, is really special to me, it reminds me of a time when I realised how important nature is to me. I can really hear the sound of waves in this.

‘North-West’ is a really calming instrumental piece I wrote which is inspired by the beginning and creation of life in nature, which also brings you on a vivid journey. When I listen to North-West, I can imagine a little seed growing into a big tree. In Sligo, we’re surrounded by nature, no matter what way you turn, so I decided the perfect name for this piece would be our location, the north-west coast of Ireland.

‘The Salmon’s Tale’ is the first contemporary tune I wrote, and arranging this tune inspired me to experiment more with my pieces. I think the tune itself is quite cool and the arrangement is bold, but then it breaks down into an unexpected outro, which is very calming and was a perfect way to end the EP, as I feel like it ties it all together.”

Once covid restrictions allow, BRÍDÍN plans to celebrate the launch of her EP with a live show from the cockpit of a decommissioned Boeing 767 plane, located at their “Quirky Nights Glamping Village” in Enniscrone Co. Sligo.

The Jonah Medal Release Debut Single

How far does someone need to travel, over how many years, to find what they’re looking for in the faces, names and sounds of the home they left so long ago? What answers are there to be found on the long road back to oneself? These are the questions that Wicklow born songwriter Bjorn Baillie asks himself, his collaborators and his audience, with his debut single ‘Septembering’, released today under the name of The Jonah Medal.

About his debut single Baillie says, “The song is about being in the middle of the mid-life storm. You’re pulled every which way by the younger who need and rely on you, and the older who need you for a whole other set of reasons. I like the word September as a metaphor for middle-age. You’re no longer in your spring-youth. So being in your 40’s is ‘Septembering’. The things that have come along in your life, the people who have become part of your family, and define who you are now. The responsibility and weight of those relationships is reflected in this song. The melody is one of the simplest but most instant of anything I’ve written. It feels like it has been around forever, but it just landed in my lap. A real gem.”

The song was part recorded in Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles and Brighton, UK (in Nick Cave’s studio).

Founded in Brighton, UK in 2020, The Jonah Medal began as a creative mission for Baillie to challenge his own forward musical progression, turn backwards and deeply inwards, and embrace the familiar.

Having written for many years for a band who needed singles and album tracks, The Jonah Medal is my finally feeling comfortable addressing the issues in my own life, in my friends’ lives, and the lives of my peers.” Bjorn Baillie

Baillie’s own creative journey had taken him around the world once already with his hometown band La Rocca. He spent his 20’s with them signing a major record deal, posting up in LA and touring with the likes of Phoenix, Jet, Silversun Pickups, and more. While based in LA, Baillie logged countless hours collaborating with artists of every genre; in the process, cultivating a deeply personal connection with the musical legacy, the lifestyle and the inhabitants of the legendary Laurel Canyon neighbourhood. There is a through-line from Baillie’s “Laurel Canyon period” into the new music of The Jonah Medal – the bare honesty and humanity of Carole King and Joni Mitchell, the soulful lyricism of Crosby, Stills and Nash and the humour of Randy Newman – these are the themes that Baillie knew he needed to express in this new body of work, with the new-found perspective and experience of a well traveled artist and a father.

I’m asking my own generation if they’re okay. Mid-life is here for so many of us. With older parents and young children… we’re the generation squeezed in the middle trying to hold it all together. THATS what I’m addressing, all following my lead to serve the song, with sincerity and warmth.” The Jonah Medal reflects the musical and lyrical themes explored by Baillie throughout his career, injected with the clarity and heart of a man living a truly full life. Weathered optimism, clear-eyed understanding, the highs and lows of relationships, and adulthood, all represented in the lyrics, the sounds and the fabric of this music.

Keychange Expands in Ireland

Keychange along with partners Ireland Music Week and sponsors IMRO have announced an expansion of the Keychange movement in Ireland. James Foley, Lead, Editorial at Spotify UK and Ireland is also announced as a Keychange Ambassador.

7 Irish organisations in total have now signed the Keychange gender pledge; Choice Music Prize, Foggy Notions, The Folly @ Cullohill, Ireland Music Week, HearOne Music, Minding Creative Minds and Róisín Dubh. All organisations have signed the Keychange gender equality pledge towards achieving 50% representation of women and under-represented genders – find the full list of Irish signatories here.

Eleanor McEvoy, IMRO Chairperson said, “International collaboration is essential to the creative and business development of all talented artists and the music industry’s future success. Enabling more women access to international networks and new markets at critical stages in their career will help them realise their potential as future leaders of an industry that is ready for and will benefit from change. Right now we have an opportunity to respond and commit to tangible change within the music industry”.

New Keychange Ambassador and Lead, Editorial at Spotify UK, James Foley said, “Even though the statistics on gender equality in music continue to make for bleak reading, I am ever-hopeful for change when I see the impact Keychange is having and the potential we all have to do more. In my day to day role in the UK + Ireland music team at Spotify, I’m focused on how we can create a more equal platform, give under-represented voices a stage and open up our listener’s ears to different viewpoints. I’m also keenly aware that gender equality in music is intersectional and can positively address other systemic inequalities. I take seriously the commitment to affecting change and connecting people who can unlock the challenges we face in making the industry a more equal place to exist. I’m really looking forward to working with everyone involved in Keychange as an Irish ambassador and I am excited about what’s to come”.

Angela Dorgan, Director of Ireland Music Week, said “The motivation for Ireland Music Week becoming a supporter and subsequently a partner in Keychange was to change the narrative around the lack of gender balance in festival line ups, to challenge the idea that “the talent isn’t there”. IMW have now achieved close to or over a 50% gender representation in our line up as a feeder festival of new and emerging acts in the past five years. The result has been more and more women and underrepresented gender acts apply every year.  The successes, visibility and audiences that those bands attract are speaking for themselves. Pledging to Keychange means we can all make a positive difference in our everyday corner of the music industry.”

Panel Event

On Thursday 25th February at 4pm GMT / 5pm CET, a panel titled ‘Community and Management’, focusing on the Benefits and importance of collaboration and creating your network, will be broadcast on the Keychange Facebook page here

‘Home from Home’, the Brand-New Album from The High Kings

Recorded live at Concert Deck in Dublin, The High Kings’ ‘Home from Home’, out 5th March, is a journey through classic folk songs, old and new.

The idea behind this album was to bring our fans on a journey across the world, to some of the places we call home when we tour, via some of the classic folk songs that have inspired us.”

Each city, each tour, seeing familiar faces in the crowd, and the welcoming we get year after year – that is our home from home… and to be separated during this last year has been so hard for us,” says Darren Holden, “We decided to come together to record and film these songs for release at a time when we should be playing them live to our fans.”

According to Brian Dunphy, “this album is our effort to bring us all together until a time when we can meet in person again.”

The album also features a guest appearance by Brian Kennedy on the iconic Irish folk song Carrickfergus.
