Diane Cannon Releases “Seán Ó Duibhir a’ Ghleanna”

It’s not often that a new voice arises out of an ancient tradition that fuses the richness of the past with the promise of the future. But out of the centuries-old traditions of her native Donegal, Diane Cannon is a singer and musician who beautifully brings the songs sung and the music played by the hearth fire of a long gone house ceili to the sophisticated tastes of a 21st century audience. From Meenlaragh, a small town outside the village of Gortahork in the heart of the Donegal Gaeltacht, Diane inherited her copious musical talents from both sides of her family; all four grandparents were accomplished musicians and singers.

As a youngster, Diane frequently won competitions and competes successfully to this day, most recently winning first place in the prestigious competition, Comortas Cuimhneacháin Shéain Óig Uí Thuama at Oireachtas na Gaeilge. Diane also regularly performs and records with her equally talented seán-nós singer and daughter Kelly Ní Chanainn, whom she proudly raised mentoring and steeping her in traditional Irish music and language.

For a number of years, I have been working and researching – with Lillis Ó Laoire – forgotten songs of my native area, great songs although they have never been recorded,” she says.“I would love to breathe new life into these old songs, rejuvenating them with modern arrangements and state of the art recording while still remaining true to the core tradition. This will reinforce the respect for what has gone before while at the same time moving the tradition further into the 21st century.

The first of these songs is the new single “Seán Ó Duibhir a’ Ghleanna” which is recorded under the direction of producer, composer and multi- instrumentalist Dónal Ó Connor of Redbox Recording in Belfast. The song dates back to the time of Cromwell’s … in Ireland in the mid 1700’s. The glen that is mentioned in the song is Glen of Aherlow in Tipperary. It is there that Seán lived and was evicted because of the part he played in the (battle/war/fight?) and was forced to exile to Europe. Albeit that it is Munster that is mentioned in this song and that it is a Munster version, there is a striking resemblance between it and the melody Nellie Mc Connell from Derryleconnell in Donegal had put to the song. As well as that Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill also recorded a version on her first CD from which she got from Nellie Ní Dhomhnaill of Ranafast. This would seem to indicate that the song was widespread throughout the country and that it has roots in the North as well as in the South. It was from Doimnic Mac Giolla Bhríde I head this version which he sings so well himself.

It was challenging for me to get the song right, as it depicts beauty and also at the same time heartbreak. Seán longs to celebrate nature and its beauty on a summers morning while yet his heart is heavy as he knows he must leave. Emigration is still something the Irish can relate to still to this day.

With great guidance, and empathy to the song and to the voice, the music and arrangement was carefully produced by Dónal O’ Connor with wonderful accompaniment by John Mc Sherry, Paul Meehan and Conor McCreanor. Diane is also currently working on recording her new album of contemporary and traditional music with these artists and others yet to be announced.

Michael O’Riordan Receives Midem Gold Pioneer Medal

Renowned Irish music publisher Michael O’Riordan has been awarded the Midem Gold Pioneer Medal for his extensive contribution to the Music Business. The medal was presented to O’Riordan, the only Irish person to receive the award, by IMRO CEO Victor Finn and Keith Donald, Chairman of IMRO’s Board of Directors.

Michael O´Riordan was a major player in the success of Release Records in the late 1960s, when the Irish music scene was mainly dominated by that label and its unrivalled catalogue of showbands, ballad singers and cabaret acts. Since the advent of Ritz Records he has been an unrelenting campaigner for more use of all types of Irish music on radio and television. More recently he has concentrated on the publishing side of the business through his Watermill publishing company. O´Riordan has also devoted much of his time to servicing the music industry. He is both a director and committee member of IMRO and MCPSI, served on the Music Board of Ireland and is currently president of the Music Publishers Association of Ireland.

Midem is the leading business event for the international music industry featuring four days of music conferences, forums, competitions and networking events. Midem has been held each year since 1967 in Cannes with several thousand musicians, producers, agents, publishers, PROs, government ministers, tech companies, managers, lawyers, executives, entrepreneurs and journalists from around the world regularly attend the event.  The Midem Gold Pioneer Medal is awarded to select individuals to commemorate their attendance at Midem and their contribution to the music industry.

The Acoustic Yard Tickets on Sale Now

Tickets are now on sale for the IMRO sponsored ‘The 2nd Acoustic Yard Singer/Songwriters Festival Westport’ on May 5th – May 7th, 2017.

Headlining this year will be Duke Special & Ulaid with special guest Jack O’Rourke on Saturday May 6th at the Town Hall Theatre. When contemporary songwriting and traditional music meet, the results can be something to be treasured. Such is the case with the collaboration between folk supergroup, Ulaid, and singer-songwriter extraordinaire, Duke Special. The project called ‘The Belfast Suite’ draws on Duke Special’s songwriting skills, from pre-rock’n’roll to modern acoustic pop. He injects drama and theatricality, bringing storytelling to the fore with meditative twists and turns amid the melodic architecture. Ulaid’s mixture of skills in arrangement, interpretation, composition and performance lend a peculiarly folk-but-modern, urban-but-pastoral air to the whole. For a collaboration that may have seemed unlikely in theory, proves itself thoroughly in practice; when heard, it somehow seems inevitable.

Also at the Town Hall Theatre, there will be a special concert celebrating the 250 year anniversary of Westport called ‘250 years of Westport Song’ on Friday May 5th.

The concert celebrates some of the great songs and songwriters to grace the bars, cafes and stages of Westport over the years. Artists include John Hoban, Tony Reidy, Johnny Fadgin, Connie Cullen, Brian Duffy, Finn Upbeat Costello, Rosa May Kinsella and many more. These celebrated artists have helped to create and continue the town’s musical heritage.

There will be rare visual footage (video clips and photographs) taken 25 years ago by Willem Blok to use as a backdrop to accompany the musical event.  Willem, who used to live in Mayo, is releasing a documentary in June 2017 called “25 years: County Mayo through Foreign Eyes”.

There are a host of other concerts throughout the weekend with artists like Nick Kelly (ex-Fat Lady Sings front man) Cormac O’Caoimh, Paul McDonnell, Kate O’Callaghan, Pa Curran (The Acoustic Yard Songwriter of the Year 2016), Davie Furey and many more.

Declan’s Sessions will roll up in their van to record some of the acts for social media and there’s a chance for new artists to join in the open mics and workshops available.

Slane Bound Otherkin Share ‘Bad Advice’ Video

Irish grunge-pop band Otherkin have just shared the video for their new single ‘Bad Advice’ The video is directed by Finn Keenan, and is the third collaboration between band and director, following ‘Ay Ay’ and ‘I Was Born’. Finn won the Best Music Video category at the ICAD’s Young Director Awards in Dublin back in February.

Finn says:

‘I love the look of a simple circle in a square and wanted to see how much we could play with that. We built four different coloured backgrounds with holes in them and then just spent the day moving them around getting interesting and confusing results! Not a bad ole way to spend a Sunday!’

Otherkin have just been announced as the openers for Guns ‘N’ Roses at Slane Castle on May 27th. The gig is a dream-come-true for Otherkin frontman Luke Reilly, who was born and raised in Slane. Luke says:

“I remember telling my brother that one day I’d play Slane. I remember years ago standing in my cousin’s bedroom in Toronto and he is the biggest Guns N’ Roses fan ever and I remember seeing all his posters and Guns’ records and I said that one day I’d play Slane.”

‘Bad Advice’ and Slane mark the start of a busy summer for Otherkin. The band have also been confirmed for the mega rock/metal festival Download in the UK in June, as they criss-cross Brexit-land and beyond for the big gigs of the summer months.

Otherkin are just putting the finishing touches to their debut album, which will be released by Rubyworks later in 2017.

‘Bad Advice’ is available on all streaming and download platforms.

Diatribe Records Presents Two Landmark Performances

Diatribe Records presents two landmark performances to celebrate the release of new recordings by Benjamin Dwyer and Darragh Morgan at The Complex Dublin on Friday 28th April.

Benjamin Dwyer – ‘Umbilical’ a stunning world-premiere recording of a major work featuring internationally renowned artists Maya Homburger (baroque violin), Barry Guy (double bass) and David Adams (harpsichord).

Accompanying the release is an essay by Dwyer entitled ‘Umbilical: The Story of Oedipus, the Story of Jocasta…’ in which he repositions the traditional narrative of the myth to foreground Jocasta’s perspective. In doing so, he proposes that “music is not only a sensuous phenomenon that invades us physically and psychically; it also creates a space within which intimacy might be communally shared.”

‘Umbilical’ is not a passive “evasion of tragedy”, but rather a direct confrontation; one in which “according to Lacan, the intensity of Jocasta’s sexuality calls into play the function of eroticism as proposed by his understanding of jouissance, which, building upon Freud’s constructions of eros and thanatos, posits sexual enjoyment as an eroticized death-drive. He sees the degree of frenzy in jouissance as taking the subject beyond the pleasure principle; a notion that is amplified in a proposal by Bataille arguing that Jocasta’s eroticism is ‘the disequilibrium in which the being consciously calls her own existence into question.”

Darragh Morgan – ‘For Violin and Electronics’ is a landmark release featuring six major new works by leading electroacoustic composers Paul Wilson, Jonty Harrison, Ricardo Climent, Jonathan Nangle, Scott Wilson and Simon Emmerson.

Darragh Morgan is one of Europe’s leading violinists, internationally recognised as both soloist and chamber musician and frequently appearing at major festivals in many of the world’s most prestigious concert halls.

As a chamber musician, he has collaborated with artists such as Thomas Ades, Emmanuel Pahud, Joanna MacGregor, Nicholas Daniel and John Tilbury, and as a highly active and renowned interpreter of contemporary music has worked with and premiered the music of many of the most  important composers of our time including Arvo Part, John Tavener, Gavin Bryars, Philip Glass, Howard Skempton, Michael Nyman, Gerald Barry and Michael Finnissy.

Darragh has led Ensemble Modern, London Sinfonietta, MusikFabrik and the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, was a member of the acclaimed Smith Quartet from 2005-11, and is violinist in the Fidelio Trio.

Umbilical celebrates its international launch with a live performance of the complete work on Friday 28th April 2017, at The Complex, Dublin, with Darragh Morgan ‘For Violin and Electronics’ launching on the same night.
