Ailie Announces 1st Single Since UK Songwriting Contest Win

Following her UK Songwriting Contest win with her love song “How Much Do You Love Me?” (Love Song Category, 2014), Ailie Blunnie announces the release of the title track from her forthcoming album, “West To The Evening Sun”.

Officially released on Friday, February 10th, ‘West To The Evening Sun’ is a modern folk ballad telling the story of someone longing to get away from their life as it is, to a place where they feel safe to dream of better things (“I’m going west to my freedom and west to the evening sun”).

The sounds used in the song draw from the outside world (wind chimes) and the body (body percussion, breathing, whispers), as well as traditional instruments like bodhrán, guitar and piano. The intended result is a watercolour of sound and texture, permeated by a sense of hope and resilience.

From Leitrim, Ailie Blunnie grew up on the banks of the Shannon: a playground of lakes and woodlands, and a stone’s throw from the rugged coastlines of North Leitrim and Sligo.
She studied music at NUI Maynooth (BA Music/French; M.Litt Music) and psychology at DBS (H.Dip Psych) and now lives in Dublin where she writes songs, continues to study psychology, and takes a keen interest in all things science and astronomy.

A taster from the Leitrim singer-songwriter’s forthcoming debut album shows a craftswoman who knows the right measure of guile and atmospherics which a soundscape of this majesty requires.” (Jim Carroll, Irish Times)

Stoat Release “Talk Radio Makes Me Feel Alone” Today

Following a long time out of the public eye, Stoat are back with a new single ‘Talk Radio Makes Me Feel Alone’, released 6th February ahead of upcoming album ‘Try Not to Think About it’ due later in the spring.

‘Talk Radio Makes Me Feel Alone’ is a high-energy, danceable tune over a stomping rant against talk radio. It’s got shades of Two Door Cinema Club and Metronomy, and the kind of comic bite like you might find in Scroobius Pip or even Sleaford Mods.

This is their first release since the single ‘Nobody in Heaven’ all the way back in 2007. Which was taken from their previous and first album, ‘Future Come and Get Me’. People said some nice things about that:

Fun and sheer joy
Weird and absolutely wonderful
‘…excellent songwriting core, with original melodies and ingenious changes’

Despite the lack of releases, Stoat have been busy over the past decade, trying out new sounds and messing around in the usual musical backwaters that have always drawn them. Categorisation has always been a bit of a problem. Their back catalogue features instrumentals, straight up folk, punk, spoken word pieces, and a fair bit of guitar-based pop. The new album is a little more danceable, but similarly diverse. Lyrically, there is a common theme through much of it, and that’s trying to figure out the best way of being alive without being sad or angry.

They’re one of those bands who never really got anywhere, and never will. That moment of realisation, when you see that you’re not going to be rich and famous, that’s when you’re supposed to break up. They never did. Reality sucked all the ambition away, but not the itch to try for great tunes, or the fun, or the love.

We’re a band, not a brand’ says Cormac, who plays bass and did most of the heavy lifting on this recording.

Joshua Burnside Announces Debut Album “Ephrata”

Northern Irish singer-songwriter Joshua Burnside releases his debut album Ephrata on 5 May via Quiet Arch Records. Written in a burst of a few weeks whilst living in northern Colombia, the songs on the album deal with a diverse range of themes, from PTSD and technophobia, to larger questions about time, love and death in the modern age. Balanced with a diverse palette of sounds, Burnside deftly blends alt-folk and elements of the Irish folk song tradition with South American rhythms and Eastern European influences, whilst introducing synthetic and found-sounds, synths loops and crunching beats to create a stormy world that shifts and swirls perspective like a lingering lucid dream.

Burnside released his critically acclaimed first EP If Your Goin That Way in 2013, which was described by The Irish Times as; “Rumbling, brooding, powerful, magnetic.” The lead single “Black Dog Sin” received numerous radio plays from Gideon Coe and Lauren Lavern on 6 Music and went on to notch up 1.5 million plays on Spotify and over 50,000 plays on YouTube.

The influences of his Irish background and his love of Gothic Folk-Americana, has brought him fans both in the UK and America. Ephrata is the name of a small town in Pennsylvania, nodding to the transatlantic connection. Burnside visited Ephrata whilst on tour a few years ago, when a nearby market burnt down on the first night he was there and fire engines drove past all night. He explains his state of mind whilst writing the title track; “I was going in between dreaming and being awake, having apocalyptic dreams. The song uses synths and upbeat Colombian rhythms to contrast some of the darker lyrical themes.

Ephrata sees a change in direction for Burnside, moving away from an indie folk sound. The gothic and religious themes remain but a distinct Latin flavour has wormed its way into the music, inspired by his time in South America. In need of a change of scene and creative stimulus, he stayed with his cousin who was living in Colombia for a few months. He had no money when he went out there so he borrowed a small classical guitar and started writing the album. He even played with a local Cumbia group (mixing traditional African dance music with European instrumentation) and soaked up the rhythmic influences, most notably in songs such as “26th Street” (named after the street in Bogota where the political satirist Jaime Garzon was assassinated) and “fightorfight” (featuring guest vocals from Hozier cellist and backing vocalist Alana Henderson).

The lyrics are very much central to the songs and are at times deeply personal and intimate such as in “Holllllogram”, which touches on the modern addiction to the Internet. In the song he explores the problems with loving someone from afar on social media sites, as he says; “All you see is a pale reflection of them, none of the details, like the sunlight reflecting on the moon and then again on to a rippling ocean, your vision of them is completely distorted.”

There’s an apocalyptic theme running throughout the record and much of the album is about PTSD. Joshua explains; “How something as routine as getting your blood taken can set off a fight or flight style anxiety attack, all of a sudden it’s as if the world is ending.

The whole album is more dramatic and songs like “Tunnels pt 2” is rockier than anything he has done before. The arrangements are bolder and more colourful and there’s a greater sense of urgency. It is balanced out by a lighter side, with upbeat tracks such as “Ephrata” and “Unrequited Kind” belying the serious lyrical themes.

Burnside’s contemporary influences include bands such as Sun Kil Moon, Dirty Three, The Books and The Microphones, but this year has also found himself listening to a variety of old tapes, with the incongruous mixture of Dick Gaughan, Talking Heads, Toto La Mompasina and The Cure creeping in to his own sound.

A multi-instrumentalist, Burnside played most of the sounds on the album but was also joined by a number of collaborators and producers with whom he’s worked with over the past few years, most of whom play for different people and have their own solo projects. These include his brother Connor on drums and percussions, electronic solo artist Rachael Boyd on violin and synths, Clark Phillips on bass and Sarah Martin on trumpet.

New single “Tunnels pt3” can be streamed on Soundcloud here.

Éilís Kennedy Releases New Album “Westward”

“Westward”, the new CD by Éilís Kennedy is a product of life on the Atlantic fringe, with songs in English and Irish inspired by famous musical nights in Dingle and beyond. Having travelled to the west coast of California to record with Grammy Award winning guitarist William Coulter, this album reflects where Éilís is at now, as an artist. Featuring traditional and contemporary songs and in a new departure for Kennedy, two self-penned originals, referencing her own distinct place and people.

Baile an Mhúraigh is at the edge of Europe, the most westerly tip of the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry. It’s a place that lies between the wild grandeur of Mount Brandon and the booming Atlantic Ocean. It is here that Éilís Kennedy’s parents transmitted to her a lifelong interest in poetry and song. At home, both music and the Gaelic language were part of everyday life, a happy fact reflected on this beautiful new recording Westward. She has been fortunate to have had the opportunity to listen to many of the finest exponents of song in her locality and she has absorbed all that resonates within that vibrant Gaeltacht tradition, yet it is the emotions and stories associated with singing that have informed her love of song.

John Benny’s pub in Dingle, famed for its all night singing sessions, just so happens to have Éilís as its Bean a’ Tí or Woman of the House and Éilís and her husband John Benny are renowned for inviting Ireland’s finest artists to perform here. It is through immersion with this melting pot of musicians and singers that have passed through Dingle and settled in the area, that Éilís was first encouraged to record. She released to great critical acclaim two solo CDs Time to Sail in 2001 and One Sweet Kiss in 2005. In 2007, alongside Rita Connolly, Seamus Begley, Jim Murray, Eoin Ó Beaglaoich & Dáithí Ó Sé, she was part of Béal Tuinne, a 15 song cycle, based on her own father, Caoimhín Ó Cinnéide’s poems and set to original music by world renowned composer Shaun Davey (Brendan Voyage, The Relief of Derry Symphony). In 2009 she formed Lumiere with Pauline Scanlon, on discovering a shared interest in and love of song and on enjoying the new experience of duo singing. They released 2 albums, Lumiere and My Dearest Dear, and have toured Ireland, Australia, the USA and Europe. They have done much to bring the songs of Ireland to a wider audience and have received huge praise for their spirited performances worldwide in places such as Carnegie Hall in New York and The Barbican in London.

For this record Éilís has taken to the pen for the first time. ‘The Flannel Red’ tells a personal tale of superstition from the Great Blasket Islands. ‘Highway Mack’ references the currently relevant issue of homelessness. These new songs sit alongside fresh interpretations of classics such as ‘John O’Dreams’ and less well known gems such as ‘An tÚll’ and ‘Pé in Eirinn Í’.

This cd reflects some of my musical travels in the last 20 years and, for the first time, some original songs of my own. Now that I am older, with more time, I have the freedom to spend time writing as well as learning new songs. The people with whom I have developed my music over the years also feature here, and I recorded it outside Ireland to bring that perspective that being away from the familiar can bring. For me there is a sense of the past from my own family, and also a glimpse of the new. I had strong ideas of sound and also the look of the booklet and photographs which years of recording and performing have given me in a sense an independence.” Éilís Kennedy

“Éilís Kennedy makes a welcome return as a solo artist, and her third album Westward is a fresh-faced, wide-horizoned beauty. Debuting as a songwriter, Kennedy’s late vocation reveals that her finely tuned ears are matched by an equally poised pen.” **** The Irish Times
