The final event in Concorde’s series UP CLOSE WITH MUSIC at the RHA Gallery this year features new work by composer Rhona Clarke and artist Marie Hanlon, a 70th birthday tribute to Frank Corcoran, the premiere of a specially composed work by Concorde’s 2014 student composer Patrick Egan, music from Norway and Dublin contemplating ‘dawn’, and music from Icelandic and Irish composers reflecting on ‘breath’.  The concerts take place at 2.30 and 3.45 pm and admission is free.  Programmes feature new Irish music in an international context.  The Gallery opens at Noon and current exhibitions include Dorothy Cross: Connemara and James Hanley: Souvenirs.

Up Close with Music is supported by a Music Project Award from The Arts Council.

New TG4 Music Show Bosca Ceoil Announces Pauline Scanlon as Presenter

Bosca CeoilTG4’s newest, most exciting traditional Irish music series, Bosca Ceoil, is recording in Monroes Live, Galway from April 7th-11th. It has been announced that Pauline Scanlon from Lumiere will be the presenter of the series.

Pauline Scanlon has a voice described by The Irish Times as “a superb mix of china cup fragility and steely strength”- Hailing from the strong West Kerry tradition of song, she has the ability to interpret her physical and emotional landscape. Pauline has released 4 albums, all to critical acclaim, 2 solo offerings and in recent years 2 as half of celebrated duo Lumiere. Pauline’s distinctive voice has seen her perform around the globe on stages from Glastonbury to New York’s Carnegie Hall. Over the years she has performed and recorded with some of Ireland’s most cherished artists including Sinéad O’Connor, Damien Dempsey, Séamus Begley and John Spillane to name a few. Throughout her career Pauline has exemplified her worldly knowledge of different musical styles and showcased her ability and willingness to cross-traditional boundaries while maintaining her roots in West Kerry.

Bosca Ceoil brings together an eclectic mix of famous faces and new artists and is brought to TG4 by the team behind 2013’s hit series, Fleadh Live. Gifted Empire Productions broke new ground with massive audience ratings for Fleadh Live and was a huge success with their groundbreaking coverage of Fleadh Ceoil 2013 from Derry.

Artists already confirmed to appear in the filming of Bosca Ceoil include:

Sharon Shannon, Cara Dillon, Dervish, We Banjo 3, Moxie, Frankie Gavin, Flook, Four Men and a Dog and Mick Flannery.

Now added to the line up are Lumiere, Buttons & Bows, Joanie Madden, Beoga, Steve & Joe Wall, Edel Fox & Nell Byrne, Alan Kelly Gang, The Bonny Men,  Raw Bar Collective, At First Light, New Road with Lisa O’Neill & Donal McCague.

Upcoming Songwriting, Music & Performance Workshops

luan parleSinger-songwriter, Luan Parle, is currently in the middle of a series of Songwriting, Music and Performance workshops taking place at venues throughout the country. This month, Luan will be hosting a two-day workshop on Glór, Ennis on 15th and 16th April and then moving on to Making Music in Gorey, Co. Wexford on 18th and 19th April.

Luan recently hosted workshops in Naas and Wicklow. The participants of the Wicklow workshop will be performing their song at the Wicklow Wide Coffee Morning in Enniskerry this morning, Friday 4th April.

Dave Geraghty launches new ‘Join Me In The Pines’ project

Join Me In The Pines (1)Bell X1’s David Geraghty released his debut solo album ‘Kill Your Darlings’ in 2007, to critical and fan acclaim. The album was also nominated for a Choice Music Prize that year. 2009 saw Geraghty return with his second solo offering ‘The Victory Dance’. Both of these albums were written and recorded between stints in the hectic Bell X1 touring schedule.

Similarly, Dave’s new project, ‘Join Me in the Pines’ was written and recorded over a year and half while on and off the road. JMITP is a return to the somewhat isolated creative process under which his debut album was made. This time around the process benefits from a newly built home studio, (which was tried and tested on the demos for Bell X1’s “Chop Chop” album). “Finally there’s a place, other than their flight cases, where all these instruments can reside. Every musician’s dream is to have their own home studio. However, this dream is of the double-edged sword variety. Being a workaholic, it’s sometimes difficult to switch off knowing that the studio is attached to your living room.”
