Christie Hennessy Song Competition Open For Entries

A series of music events are scheduled to take place in Tralee this coming May to celebrate the life and music of iconic songwriter and performer – Christie Hennessy. A full programme of events will be announced in the coming weeks. As part of the exciting programme we are launching the Christie Hennessy Song Competition. Details on how to enter are outlined below.

About Christie Hennessy

Christie was born in Tralee, County Kerry; he was the youngest of 9 children. There was always music in the house. His father played jazz on the accordian, his mother, a great storyteller, sang traditional Irish songs. Neighbours and family members, including Henry Curtin who played drums (Frank Sinatra's drummer), would join in the regular sessions of music and song. (Happy Days)

From these early memories, Christie's influences ranged from Elvis, Al Johnson, Bill Haley, Fats Domino, Robert Johnson and Mississippi John Hurt to The Beatles and all musicals.

Christie left school at 11½ (the ½ he said was important). At 15 he went to work on building sites in London by day and played in the R&B clubs by night. Christie was 23 when he wrote his first song.

Christie released his first album "Christie Hennessy" (also known as "The Green Album") in 1972, "The Rehearsal" 1992 (triple platinum), "A Year In The Life" 1993 (quadruple platinum), "Lord of Your Eyes" 1994 (triple platinum), "The Box" 1996 (triple platinum), "This Is As Far As I Go" 1999 (double platinum), "The Definitive Christie Hennessy" 2003, "Stories For Sale" 2005, "The Platinum Collection" 2007.

Christie was discovered by the late John Peel.

Christie composed the theme tune and incidental music for the BBC TV series "Get Well Soon" written by Ray Galton ("Steptoe & Son") and composed and wrote a musical/feature film about his native Ireland "Two Stops to Paradise".

As well as writing Christie produced two of his own albums with Steve Nye, "The Box" and "This Is As Far As I Go". He solo produced Aled Jones' album "Whenever God Shines His Light".

The following artists are among the many who have covered Christie's songs.

Christy Moore – "Don't Forget Your Shovel"
Frances Black – "All The Lies That You Told Me"
Moya Brennan – "Oh Jealous Heart"
Nizlopi attained their first No.1 ("JCB Song") sampling some of Christie's lyrics from "Don't Forget Your Shovel" (Xmas single 2005 – UK & Ireland)

Christie was the Patron to the Irish charity "Children in Crossfire". His special focus was on the schools literacy programmes, as Christie was unable to read or write himself due to his childhoold years spent roaming the countryside rather than attending school. He suffered from severe dyslexia which was not picked up at school.

Following a trip to Kenya with the charity in 2006 and after spending time in the different villages with the children, Christie wrote a song "A Price For Love". He thought it was very important that the lyrics came from what the children would say to us all if they could. All royalties from this single are being donated to the charity in perpetuity. You can find out more about "Children in Crossfire" on their website

Irish Songwriter Donates Songs for Australian Flood Relief

Irish songwriter and IMRO member, Brendan Graham has donated two of his songs, for the CD, FLOOD RELIEF – ARTISTS FOR THE FLOOD APPEAL, released this week by Sony Music, Australia.

Graham’s songs You Raise Me Up, sung by Australian artist, Mark Vincent, and Sometimes A Prayer Will do, sung by new discovery, 13-year old Queenslander, Straalen McCallum will line up with an array of Australian and International artists and songwriters, who have waived all royalties in an effort to help relieve the terrible distress caused by the Australian Floods.

Denis Handlin AM, Chairman and CEO of Sony Music (Aus & NZ), said in a statement “The effect of this tragedy and its terrible toll on life, families, communities and property has touched many people both here and around the globe," he said. "On behalf of Sony Music and the Sony Foundation, our thoughts and prayers are with those affected, and our immense gratitude goes to all the emergency service people and volunteers who have so generously given in this time of need.”

“We have been overwhelmed by the response by both local and international artists wanting to contribute to the cause and our thanks go to all those artists and songwriters for generously donating their tracks royalty free. We also thank Sony DADC Australia for kindly donating the CD manufacturing.”

Among those featured on the 3-CD album are contributions from Aussie artists including Midnight Oil, Jessica Mauboy, Guy Sebastian, Tommy Emmanuel, Lee Kernaghan and Crowded House, together with international artists such as P!nk, Keith Urban, Sting, Bon Jovi, Kings Of Leon, Beyonce, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Foo Fighters, John Mayer, Bob Dylan and Jeff Buckley.

In 2009, Sony Music’s Bushfire AID – Artists For the Bushfire Appeal CD sold over 110,000 copies to raise more than $1.7 million for the Salvation Army’s Victorian Bushfires Appeal

FLOOD RELIEF – Artists For The Flood Appeal aims to have similar success with proceeds from the sale of the CD going to the Salvation Army Flood Appeal – through the charitable arm of the Australian Sony Group of Companies, The Sony Foundation.

Of the inclusion of his two songs, the Mayo-based songwriter said ‘’It is a privelige to be asked to help even in the smallest way in a tragedy of such proportions as the Australian people are now suffering. We have all watched the TV footage. It is almost overwhelming to see the scale of devastation caused, and heartbreaking to witness… but the Aussies are a people of great spirit and community. They will rise together through this’’.

17th March – Limerick (Venue TBC)
18th March – Dolans, Limerick
24th March – Chawkes, Adare

Acoustra are a four-piece trad/folk/rock band from Limerick who have been writing and performing original material for ten years. They have a new EP out on March 11th 2011 – ‘The way it used to be’ – which tells of the current hardship we all face at the moment. The initial impetus for Acoustra came about in 2001 (for the craic) and the four-piece have never looked back since. They have a wide repertoire and a vast variety of songs ranging from original and covers, which they are known to play at gigs to rock the boat somewhat, but their utter passion resides in original song and tune writing of Trad fused with and deep rooted folk rock.

The Saw Doctors
2nd April – The Olympia Theatre, Dublin

After celebrating a No.1 Album: The Further Adventures of…., and a busy year of festivals (V Festival, Oxegen) with sell out shows across America, the UK and Ireland, The Saw Doctors partnered with Smyths Toys to raise much needed funds for the St. Vincent De Paul Society over the Xmas period and raised over €10,000. Having returned from a recent jaunt in the USA, they play at The Olympia on April 2nd.

After a year of steadfast gigging in some of the country’s most illustrious intimate venues, Young and The Union begin their nationwide tour on Feb 18th (tour dates above). Anyone expecting to see a singer-songwriter soulfully whispering into a microphone should think again. This will be a fevered, rock n' roll countrified affair!

Eleanor McEvoy
3rd March – 19:30 Theatre Royal- Thursday, Theatre Royal Waterford, Ireland
4th March – 19:30 Airfield- Friday, Airfield Dundrum, Ireland

Eleanor's music has evolved and developed over her career and this album is a confident statement.  Her continuing absorption and influence by other forms of music continues to delight and confound any listener who may attempt to pigeon-hole her simply with reference to the winsome ‘Only A Woman’s Heart’ which appeared on the massively popular album “A Woman’s Heart” back in 1992.  That was then, this is now!  “I’d Rather Go Blonde” has been mixed by Ruadhri Cushnan’ who did the breakthrough Mumford & Sons record of this year and has a wilfully contemporary relevance.
Eleanor will also undertake two headline shows of her own in March where she will be playing tracks from throughout her career but also of course from “I’d Rather Go Blonde”.  See www.eleanormcevoy.com for further details.

The Danger Is

Up-and-coming indie-pop artist THE DANGER IS aka Dubliner Niamh Farrell is to play a headline show at CRAWDADDY on Saturday 5th March. Farrell's self-titled debut EP has been making waves since its release last year. Support will come from Tony Wright's (ASIWYFA) new project VERSECHORUSVERSE. The Danger is the working title adopted by Dublin based artist Niamh Farrell for her musical endeavours. Niamh has been writing for years and after a two-year period of experimentation has created a 4-track E.P. recorded in Wicklow in 2010 and produced by Ken Mc Hugh. The E.P. confronts a multitude of emotions; from fear to happiness, love and its confusions. It is laced with honesty and humour and features climactic instrumental arrangements. Niamh graduated from N.C.A.D. with a degree in fine art in 2008. Her art and music strive to question our place within the world and within ourselves. An important element of The Danger Is, is the artwork. It consists of an imagined horizon combining the past and the present, the personal and the universal. These micro/macro landscapes and musical experimentation enable The Danger Is to present an animated, hopeful and honest perspective of life and a young musician interrogating the idea of what happens when complacency rules. Some highlights of recent months include performances in Crawdaddy supporting Warpaint, The Olympia supporting The Coronas, and supporting Brit Award winning Ellie Goulding on her Irish tour dates. Niamh will also be featured in the upcoming season of RTE's Other Voices. "Striking, classic indie-pop with alluring ties and bows from Niamh Farrell" ~ Jim Carroll / IRISH TIMES "Farrell's eponymous debut EP contains four confident alt folk ditties, each brimming with emotion and humour (see the delightfully-titled 'Rub Who You Love'), while standout track 'All for Gold' has a sneaky tribal underbelly. Feist fans, form an orderly queue." ~ Celina Murphy- Hot Press, Dec 2010 "A lot of people falling in love with The Danger Is in Whelans right now" ~ Blogger Nialler9 Tweeting during the "Ones To Watch" Festival 15-1-11 "Niamh Danger is one of the most recognizable singers to appear on the scene for several years. Her songs, voice and onstage charm are all instantly likeable and rolled together they make for a very special performance." ~ Robert O'Connor, goldenplec.com, Nov 2010 March 5th, 2011 ~ Crawdaddy, Dublin Tickets: 10 Euro including booking fee from ticketmaster.ie and usual outlets ~ Doors: 7:30pm Introductory Self-Titled Debut EP Lefthand Productions ~ Available in All Good Record Shops and iTunes.

ISNI International Agency Established in London

Officially incorporated as a London-based not-for-profit organisation in December 2010, the ISNI International Agency is helping media companies prepare for the International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI), a new standard which will streamline the way creative rights holders are referenced on the Internet.

The International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI – Draft ISO 27729) is an ISO certified global standard capable of easily identifying the millions of contributors to creative works, including writers, artists, creators, performers, researchers, producers, publishers and more. The ISNI International Agency, which will be responsible for ISNI’s administration and governance, was officially incorporated by its six founding members – CISAC (of which IMRO is a member), IFRRO, IPDA, ProQuest, OCLC and the Conference of European National Librarians (represented by Bibliothèque nationale de France and the British Library) – as a London-based not-for-profit organisation on December 22nd, 2010. The consortium members represent more than 300 rights management societies and 26,000 libraries worldwide. While the Agency creates the ISNI reference database – assigning ISNI identifiers to over 5 million names – and begins building a network of ISNI Registration Agencies, media and content companies are preparing to integrate ISNI into their operations.

“As digital formats come to dominate the entertainment landscape, a global standard that can identify all contributors to all cultural goods – whether they be artists, creators, producers, publishers – is key to an efficient legal marketplace,” said François-Xavier Nuttall, Corporate Director of the ISNI International Agency and Senior Technology Consultant for founding member CISAC.

Responding to this need, ISNI was developed under the auspices of the International Standard Organisation (ISO). The Agency’s six founding members – CISAC, IFRRO, IPDA, ProQuest, OCLC and the Conference of European National Librarians (represented by the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and the British Library) – reflect the groups that will benefit most from the standard’s integration by media companies, including creators, traditional and digital book/serial publishers, performers, libraries and other research/cataloguing specialists.
