Faction Records is delighted to present Uly’s second release, and first EP on the label, ‘pak it in //mama’.
Uly’s is back with a three-track EP on Faction Records, off the back of a very successful debut single release last March.
It consists of a completely new track, ‘pak it in’, his first ever release, ‘mama’, and a live studio recording of the same track.
‘pak it in’ is textbook Uly. Awash with his characteristic dusty, lo-fi production, it’s groovy, easy going and has a chorus that’ll get stuck in your head for days, and maybe even make you want to take a road trip.
“[…] my sister has always struggled with keeping her mental health in one piece. She’s strong, but she does get weighed down quite a bit. For a while I had been kind of neglecting my big brother duties, and wasn’t looking out for her as much as I should have been – it sucked for her. Long story short – we got back on the same page, and since then I’ve been making efforts to be more available for her – to be a bit more clued in as to where she’s at. pak it in is a like a little reminder to us both of that effort.
Mel was also constantly asking me why all the important women in my life had songs written about them, except her. I had to hook her up at some stage, you know?”
On ‘mama’:
“[…] mama is the first song I ever released as Uly – a special one for me. It’s pretty straightforward, when you listen to it. It’s a song for my moms.
What’s cool about it though, is that it marks that point that I finally got over whatever mental blocks I was having for years – stopping me from actually releasing my own music properly. I don’t know what mental switches I tripped during the writing process, but I knew I had finally found my thing and was in no position to just sit on it and not put it out there.
mama is a bit rough around the edges – you can hear how things have changed for me since last year, be it in the quality of song writing, the style, or production quality – but it’s nice to be able to share it with people again. It’s important to acknowledge where you start with this sort of thing.”
