After a four-year hiatus, Dublin’s beloved alternative folk-rock-blues band, The Riptide Movement, returns with their highly anticipated new single, “The Old Stomping Ground,” set for release on November 1st, 2024.

This rousing track marks the band’s first release since 2020, with its infectious energy, timeless storytelling, and traditional earthy tones. It is the kind of song that will not only define The Riptide Movement’s comeback but is poised to become a song sung proudly across Ireland, from small-town pubs to grand stages for generations to come. Known for their genre-transcending approach, The Riptide Movement breaks new ground on “The Old Stomping Ground,” blending their signature folk-rock-blues sound with traditional Irish and Celtic elements. The track offers a nostalgic nod to legendary bands like The DublinersThe Wolfe TonesThe Pogues, and Dropkick Murphys while still keeping true to their own authentic, distinctive sound and identity, which gives “The Old Stomping Ground,” a fresh contemporary sound.

Inspired by actual events, the song tells the unforgettable story of a boxing legend brought to life through the band’s hallmark blend of heart, humour and evocative storytelling. Lyrically rich and musically dynamic, the song is a testament to Malachy Tuohy’s lyrical prowess, alongside the band’s musical versatility and craftsmanship.

As Tuohy sings:

“Now mean Sean Stone lived up to his name, with a horseshoe in his glove and an anger in his brain, but Doyler was fast; yeah, he could duck and weave, but he never saw that dirty trick that Sean had up his sleeve.”

“The Old Stomping Ground” was written in Dublin and recorded at Orphan Recording Studios in Curracloe, Co. Wexford. It features special guest performances from some of Ireland’s most talented musicians, including Sean McKeown on the Uilleann pipes, Gavin Glass on banjo, mandolin, and pump organ and Tennessee’s dancing fiddler Hillary Klug on fiddle.

The Riptide Movement is made up of Malachy Tuohy (vocals, guitar, piano), John Dalton (guitar, whistle), and Ger McGarry (bass, harmonica); the band have expanded their sound on this song by incorporating their touring supergroup, including Aaron O’Grady on drums and Ian Smith on (guitar, synth, piano). The track was produced by the legendary Gavin Glass, whose signature touch brings out the anthemic and timeless quality of the song. ‘The Old Stomping Ground’ is a nostalgic, triumphant and anthemic return to form for the Riptide Movement.
