Carlow, Ireland – The Mercadonnas, an emerging rock band from Carlow, Ireland, release their debut single, “Céad Míle Fáilte,” today, Friday August 23rd, 2024.

The track, available on all major streaming platforms, is a dynamic post-punk ballad that explores themes of Irish identity and the human struggle for goodness in challenging times. “I wrote this song wondering about who we are and how that’s changing,” says O’Flaherty. “Historically, Irish people know what it is to be a refugee, a migrant. The Irish diaspora is proof of that. Maybe that’s why we pride ourselves so much on the Irish welcome, ‘Céad míle fáilte’ and all that—we give visitors here the welcome that we wish our grandfathers, uncles, grannies had when they had to go abroad. I hope that never changes.”

Céad Míle Fáilte” is the first of several singles The Mercadonnas plan to release independently over the coming months. The band’s sound, described as “abrasive music for abrasive times,” is a reflection of their sharp social insight, signature humor, and undeniable pop hooks.

Led by frontman Jack O’Flaherty, formerly of the synthwave band EXILES, The Mercadonnas seek to distinguish themselves with their unique blend of abrasive rock and insightful lyrics. “Céad Míle Fáilte,” which translates to “A Hundred Thousand Welcomes,” is a powerful introduction to the band’s sound—a mix of reverb-soaked guitars, driving basslines, and cavernous drums, all underscored by O’Flaherty’s raw, emotive vocals.
