Once described as “the ferocious coming out of a great new band” by The Nationals’ Aaron Dresner, following their promising self-titled debut album in 2008, it has been far from smooth sailing for The Dying Seconds.
With great expectations surrounding their sophomore album Glimmerers in 2011, chronic illness meant it would take the band another 12 years to release their third album. However, a relatively quick turnaround now appears to be on the cards, with news of a fourth album, Feast, set for release later this year.
Last Friday, June 12, The Dying Seconds released the first single from the upcoming album, titled ‘Precious Rusted Things’. The electronic elements in their indie sound are immediately evident in the intro, as a reverberated keyboard melody runs throughout the track before returning to the forefront in the outro. A dreamlike, sparkling texture glistens over the second half of each verse, becomes increasingly noticeable as the song progresses. Predominately, built around a hypnotic, Saharan-inspired syncopated guitar, the song reaches its high point through a beautiful contrast in tempo: a prolonged note held by Cantan soon gives way to a quick and catchy cadence that completes the chorus.
Speaking on the track, the band stated: “Precious Rusted Things is a joyful celebration of the things we carry with us through life, long after they’ve lost their initial shine. It is an anthem to the flaws which make a cherished thing more personal, more unique, more human.”
A highly enticing and optimistic first glimpse at what The Dying Seconds have in store, Feast looks set to bring the band back into focus. With momentum building once again, The Dying Seconds could well be returning to their position as the ones to watch in the Irish indie music scene.
