Singer-songwriter Elena Duff releases a new single called ‘Darkest Day of the Year (Winter Solstice)‘. Rather than a traditional Christmas song for this time of year, The Darkest Day of the Year marks our ancient tradition of celebrating Winter Solstice / Mid-Winter (which was Christmas long before there even was a Christmas!).
Winter Solstice marks the darkest day of the year where the sun appears to stand still in the sky, occurring between December 20th and 23rd. The date was celebrated for 5000 years in Ireland (and still is today!) and the Irish word for it ‘An Grianstad’ means ‘the sun stop”.
The Darkest Day of the year is upbeat, with rich vocals at the forefront and features acoustic guitar, a pulsing drum beat and kalimba for a dash of musical sparkle. Lyrics imagine a scene in ancient Ireland of a lost woman finding comfort and love during Solstice. It carries the message that though times are dark that better times will come.
