Acclaimed singer-songwriter Rhob Cunningham unveils Tyrant, the second single from his highly anticipated EP Shook Change, out November 22nd via OLS Records. Tyrant marks a significant departure from his previous release Lucy, bringing a bold, traditional rhythm inspired by Russian Folk music.
“Tyrant” draws its thematic and stylistic influence from Vladimir Nabokov’s short story “Tyrants Destroyed”, capturing the rising madness of a failed assassination attempt. The track’s momentum increases as it progresses, reflecting the protagonist’s spiralling inner conflict and escalating obsession.
Cunningham’s raw, poetic lyricism is front and centre as he narrates the inner turmoil of a character, blurring the line between personal justice and national consequence.
Musically, Tyrant is grounded in Russian Folk roots, and its accelerating tempo builds towards a feverish climax. Cunningham is joined once again by Cillian and Lorcan Byrne of Basciville, and Brandon Watson of The Ocelots, whose combined talents bring a dynamic, energetic edge to this powerful track.
The single was co-produced by Mark Connaughton at The Meadow in Delgany and mixed and mastered by Thomas Gabú Gabriel in Switzerland’s Valley of Sarnen.
Tyrant offers the second glimpse into Shook Change, a 4-track EP set for release on November 22nd. This will be Cunningham’s first collection of new material in nearly two years, continuing his exploration of lyrical intensity and genre-blurring sonic landscapes.
To celebrate the release of Shook Change, Cunningham will perform a special headline show at O’Regan’s in Dublin City on November 21st, supported by Zoé Basha. Tickets are available now via Eventbrite. This performance coincides with the 10th anniversary of his critically acclaimed album The Window and Day, offering fans the chance to experience his extensive back catalogue alongside new material.
