Their upcoming four-track EP ‘Punch Drunk’, out This Friday, August 28th, captures the band at their most confident and cohesive, signalling a clear step forward in sound and identity.

Punch Drunk is the latest EP from Irish indie outfit Madraí, picking up where their previous release What I’m Doing This For left off. Where that record wrestled with the uncertainty of whether there was anything left to salvage after a relationship, Punch Drunk begins in the aftermath when the fight has been fought and the protagonist is left to reckon with what remains.
Across four tracks, Madraí explore the emotional disorientation of love through moments of longing, frustration, introspection and surrender.
Love becomes a boxing match, with the protagonist admitting they have put themselves through round after round only to emerge ‘Punch Drunk’ battered, exhausted and unsure whether there is anything left to fight for.
From there, ‘Boathouse Blues‘ offers a moment of stillness and reflection, finding clarity in the quiet of a place where the protagonist can finally sit with their thoughts. ‘Start of the End’ turns inward, questioning whether certain pursuits are driven by genuine meaning or simply boredom, before arriving at the quiet security of surrender. Closing track ‘So Long’ captures the manic uncertainty of long-distance love, moving from determination and longing into loneliness, frustration and finally the bittersweet acceptance of knowing that, at the very least, they tried.
Sonically, ‘Punch Drunk’ sees Madraí push their indie sound into more atmospheric and experimental territory. Formant-shifted vocals, reverse delay trails and swirling guitar textures heighten the record’s sense of disorientation, mirroring the emotional fog at its centre.
‘Punch Drunk’ picks up immediately where Madraí’s previous EP ‘What I’m Doing This For‘ left off, turning the unresolved tension of its closing moments into the emotional aftermath of a relationship that never got its last-minute rescue.
‘Punch Drunk’ embraces the messiness of moving on. It is a record about looking back, sitting with uncomfortable questions, and eventually recognising that sometimes letting go isn’t losing the fight, it’s knowing when the fight is over.
The song opens with a direct callback to the previous EP’s title track:
“left the light all night for you, the morning stubbed it out”
Reframing the idea of leaving the door open for someone who ultimately never came back. There is no buzzer-beating reconciliation, no dramatic return to save the relationship. Instead, the protagonist is left dealing with the physical and emotional exhaustion of having fought for something until there was nothing left in the tank.
That exhaustion becomes the song’s central metaphor, with the experience of love likened to a boxing match:
“put up another fight for you, and threw the second round and now I’m just punch drunk.”
The protagonist has taken hit after hit, leaving them disorientated, bruised and struggling to make sense of what happened.
Musically, Madraí subtly mirror that feeling of intoxication and instability through experimental recording techniques, including formant-shifted vocals and reverse delay trails woven through jangly guitar lines. The result is a track that feels slightly unsteady and dreamlike capturing the sensation of being emotionally battered while still trying to find your footing.
‘Punch Drunk’ is ultimately about what happens when you realise that love can demand everything from you, and that sometimes the hardest part isn’t throwing another punch it’s accepting that you’ve already fought enough.
