Niamh Regan is a critically acclaimed songwriter from county Galway. Released in the midst of the pandemic in 2020, her debut album Hemet announced her arrival as one of the most distinctive songwriters in Ireland today. Earning nominations for both the RTE Folk Awards’ and the Choice Awards’ Album of the Year, the album received soaring praise, and led to performances on Fanning at Whelan’s, The Late Late Show, Other Voices, and La Blogothèque.
Niamh says “Looking back on 2021 it really was a special one (in spots). Massive thanks for coming along for the ride. There were many firsts for my music last year and it’s all down to you. I couldn’t have sold out shows and toured with a full band if it wasn’t for the support and belief in the music so yep, I hope to just keep it up and hopefully you’ll stick around with me as we jump into 2022 together.
I’ve been writing away, slowly but surely the last few months and I’m getting excited about the second record already. But in the meantime, I’ll be releasing an EP called ‘In The Meantime’ this March. It’s a collection of four songs that I wrote during the first + second lockdown here in Ireland. And I guess the EP has themes around everyday life, feeling stuck, family, love, loneliness, loyalty and escape.”
A natural storyteller, Regan’s songs are windows into her world, snapshots of the intimacy of everyday life. This is evident on her new EP, In the Meantime, due out in March. With her singular mastery, Regan’s songwriting draws us into the intricate details of everyday life and elevates them into something universal.
“Creating the EP was a little bit of magic for me and also felt like an escape. I’m so grateful to have had some stellar musicians bring it alive in the studio and to work alongside producer Alex Borwick again. All thanks to the Elevate Bursary and the International Galway Arts Festival.”
