ComhCheol is a new music collective that brings people with experience of Ireland’s direct provision system together with local artists to create powerful, collaborative music. The project was conceived by Dublin-based multidisciplinary artist Blue Niall, who says:
“I had the idea after the riots last November. One thing that gets lost in all the noise around immigration is the real people at the centre of it. These are human beings, not headlines – and we rarely get to hear from them directly. I believe cross-cultural collaboration makes culture stronger, not weaker. Look at the spicebag, or Irish-language hip hop – we’re seeing what happens when new and old cultures merge, and Irish identity is thriving as a result. That’s what ComhCheol is about.”
The collective’s debut single ‘Home’ will be released on Monday, 16th June to mark the beginning of Refugee Week Ireland.
Some of the artists from the project will perform live at Dublin Digital Radio on Saturday 21st June at 2pm, as part of a live cypher event recorded in Flux Studios to celebrate the single’s release.
The project began with a gathering in Paradise Studios last summer, where artists from a wide range of backgrounds introduced themselves and their stories. Several producers contributed beats for consideration, including Rory Sweeney, Mickzart, Blue Niall, and Hiiki. The group discovered remarkable common ground despite their different upbringings; many Irish artists in the room had also emigrated and spoken of homesickness, heartbreak, and songs written about family. They each shared a song from their home country, while Irish musician Iarla Ó Muirthile performed traditional songs and uilleann pipes. Producer Rory Sweeney spoke about his influences from South Africa, which led to a powerful conversation with asylum seekers in the room who shared their love of Amapiano.
From that session, Peggy introduced her idea for a song called ‘Home’, which became the collective’s debut single.
“When I was in the studio, I asked everyone what home meant to them,” says producer Mickzart. “What came back was comfort, support and welcome – everyone brought something different and that really shines through.”
Blue Niall is a rapper, designer and activist whose work boldly fuses Irish mythology with contemporary social commentary. A rising force in Ireland’s cultural landscape, his creative voice has been spotlighted by DUMMY, District, Hot Press, Nialler9 and RTÉ. His landmark artistic venture, Óisín: A Modern Retelling of the Legend of Óisín in Tír na nÓg, reimagines the ancient tale through a fresh, urgent lens, rooted in today’s Ireland.
And this is only the beginning.
With a slate of exciting new developments on the horizon, the Óisín project is about to enter an ambitious new phase—expanding its reach, deepening its impact, and bringing bold new creative elements to life.
For a decade, Blue Niall has worked as a designer on community projects in Ireland and the UK. He makes memes, parties and has a radio show on DDR. He co-creates projects rooted in liberation, folklore, and the future–ComhCheol is one such project.
Mikey Cullen is a poet, teacher, lyricist and spoken word performer. He’s been published in Totally Dublin and performed at Electric Picnic, All Together Now, and Féile na Phobail.
“The song is about solidarity – one love and all that good stuff,” says Cullen. “It’s been amazing to meet and work with people from around the world who’ve come here to build better lives.”
haga:ndröfi, from Indonesia, brings a haunting, poetic lens to the question of home:
“Home is the poem left unfinished; an ellipsis aching with possibility.”
Peggy, from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, is a celebrated gospel singer whose music now fuses Afro Jazz and soul.
“Ireland gave me and my children a second chance at life,” she says. “I live with no regrets.”
Mickzart, a Dublin-based producer, has worked with acts like Qbanaa, Absentee and Slevo. A member of the D12 INC collective, he began making music seriously in 2020.
In a time of increasing division, ComhCheol aims to counter fear with creativity—bridging communities through sound and showing that culture grows stronger when it’s shared.
