Co. Donegal band Silver Winged They Fly release their first single Cold in the Soul today, August 13th.

It’s a commentary on the times we live in, growing ever more relevant by the day even though the song was originally written during early pandemic.

“It’s a song about how being switched OFF inside yourself, leads to a lot of problems being switched ON in society and the world”, says singer Ruairi Friel. It’s cold in the soul of man, oh to be guided” he sings in the chorus.

Hypnotic drum machines and synths meet shoegaze guitars and vocals with emotionally charged lyrics.

Resentment and darkness rise in our world, as the lyrics offer hope in despair “but you know I love you, even in these dark times”

“It’s a song borne from contemplative solitude, dark nights of the soul, recognising pain. Those fleeting moments where visions of the horror and the beauty of being alive in this time arrive together, interwoven”, says songwriter Ruairi Friel. “We tried to reflect this feeling in the recording which tries to capture darkness and transform it.”

Produced by Orri McBrearty (Bell X1, Villagers, SOAK) and starring Sarah Cullen on vocal harmonies.

The forthcoming video follows the same thought process and is directed and co-produced by Sarah Cullen and Ruairi Friel using a combination of new and archive footage to create a beautiful but unsettling montage exploring nature, society, introspection and war, inspired by legendary filmmaker Adam Curtis.
