MayKay Releases New Single – ‘Busted’
MayKay finally launches her solo career with ‘Busted‘, the first single from a forthcoming album on her own creative imprint, GrainStore Records.
Best known as the fearless frontwoman of Fight Like Apes and later a member of electro heavyweights Le Galaxie, MayKay’s debut solo work finds her distilling years of collaboration into something wise, witty and truly her own.
Slinky, spaced-out, and driven by a hypnotic thud, ‘Busted‘ is a series of short, sleazy stories carrying a razor-sharp message: “Be honest with yourselves and more importantly, with your boys. Talk to your boys. Please.”
“People with bad intentions will always try to complicate the issue of consent,” says MayKay. “But it’s not complicated. Do you want women to trust you or not?”
The track was sparked when MayKay saw long-time friend Ian McFarlane (Squarehead, Tieranniesaur, Cruel Sister, Mik Pyro, Anamoe Drive) playing lap steel on Instagram.
“That moment unlocked all this music for me,” she recalls.
After years of holding back in favour of collaboration, MayKay embraced a stripped-back, self-led approach for her upcoming album. The result is a sound that, in her words, “finally sounds like me.”
‘Busted‘ is out now via GrainStore, with the full album to follow later this year.
ABOUT MAYKAY
MayKay is a singer, songwriter, TV presenter and voiceover artist. As lead singer of Fight Like Apes she was named as one of the best Irish musical acts of their generation – She’s toured the world with The Prodigy and supported the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
“Almost going into Debbie Harry territory,” she has wowed crowds at festivals across Europe and the US including South by Southwest and Glastonbury.
For the first time she’s stepping out on her own playing a collection of music she’d consider the soundtrack to the most trivial and most painful parts of her life, but she hopes, with the tongue in cheek grin of Beck or Jenny Lewis.
MayKay has collaborated with musicians Elaine Mai, DJ Kormac, Duke Special, Jerry Fish and award-winning Irish electronic quintet, Le Galaxie, who she joined as front woman in 2017, ahead of the worldwide release of their third album.
Since 2015, MayKay has presented Ireland’s leading live music series Other Voices – along with BBC presenters Annie Mac and Huw Stephens – and interviewed artists including Little Simz, Mark Lanegan and David Gray.
