Let’s take a step back in time…
The origins of the song emerged in the early 80s via Michael Sembello of Flashdance soundtrack fame. Fast forward to 1995 where Irish act 4 Rhythm released their own version of the song. The appetite for this melody was catching and then spawned into a remix further liberated by Irish duo, Sound Crowd. McCabe, like many other Dublin DJs at the time (including co-writer Al Gibbs), was constantly drawn to the Maniac instrumental and as a party piece would dabble, throwing different raps over it.
In 1999, the time felt right for him to record his own version and so took to safe surrounds of the reverent walls of The Temple Theatre, a church converted into a youngster’s raving paradise. The reaction from early doors amongst revellers was notable. From here, a twenty-year-old Mark took the live recording to the airwaves of Pulse FM, a pirate radio station based in Dublin where he was a DJ and presenter on the Drivetime slot. As the tune was teased out across the Dublin frequency, the appetite for it was undeniable and began to skyrocket. The Pulse FM land line was off the hook with requests for Maniac. Abbey Discs swiftly spotted this craving and approached Mark to officially record the song for them to release. With that, the DJ took to the Clontarf Cricket Club on the north side of Dublin where he captured some additional live elements at one of his sets. Shortly after, in February of 2000 Maniac 2000 was officially released. As anticipated, the anthem soared to number one on the Official Irish Charts, fending off stiff competition from pop royalty such as Madonna, The Backstreet Boys, All Saints and Westlife where it reigned supreme for ten consecutive weeks.
Fast forward fifteen years, when Electric Picnic came calling! It was time to give credit and celebration to a song that continued to act as a time machine for fans. As soon as those infamous hi-hats rang out, the dancefloor was instantly transported back to a joyous place of nostalgia. The reaction? Undeniably electric! For McCabe, it came as an awakening of sorts, allowing him to witness and embrace the essence of just what this anthem means to people. That moment in the fields of Stradbally 2015, confirmed that Maniac 2000 was still deep-rooted and pulsing through the veins of so many. What Mark once felt was a song he couldn’t shake and, in some ways, overshadowed the rest of his musical career, swiftly shifted to a reality of something way beyond that. He witnessed its cultural phenomenon in all its glory.
Of its journey, McCabe says: “The Temple Theatre days were really special. We were just kids loving dance music and there was no real-life pressure, but EP was a different type of special, it was an awakening for me. I hadn’t performed in almost 10 years so really wasn’t expecting much, but that night we lit a fuse. 10 years later now here we are” (2025)
To celebrate the anthem’s silver jubilee, Mark decided it was time to step back into the studio and revive Maniac, twenty-five years on. Along with vocalist Mimi Lane, he has reimagined the hit and has delivered MANIAC 2000 25TH (Anniversary Edition), available to stream now, for the first time, ever!
