“This Irish trio lean into their heritage with traditional instruments and evocative, poetic songwriting. Yet their sound has a distinctly pop feel, soaring with anthemic choruses and frontman Eddie Keough’s distinctive, barrel-chested burr.” – The Independent
Each new week seems to bring a new highlight in the continuing breakthrough of Irish trio Kingfishr. The latest development has seen the band rise into the Irish Official Singles Chart at #4 with ‘Killeagh’ – an achievement which not only provides them with their first Top 10 single, but which also sees them claim the distinction of being the only Irish artist in the Top 10. The track has also reached a new peak position of #4 on Spotify’s Irish Chart.
The success of ‘Killeagh’ provides another big momentum moment for Kingfishr. Last year ended with all 23,000 tickets for their UK and Ireland headline tour selling out, which they soon followed with confirmation of their debut North American and European headline runs – most of which have already sold-out. Their upcoming outdoor shows in Ireland triggered phenomenal public demand, selling out over 30,000 tickets already including sold-out shows in Cork, Limerick and Dublin and was recently boosted by two further shows: a second night at The Marquee in Cork on July 16th followed by the Heineken Big Top in Galway on July 20th.
And today brings even bigger news – the confirmation of their first ever headline arena show at Dublin’s 13,000-capacity 3Arena on December 19th. Tickets for the show will go on general sale HERE from 10am this Friday, April 4th.
The success of ‘Killeagh’ is particularly special as it’s a song of personal significance for the band. Bassist Eoin ‘Fitz’ Fitzgibbon played for the Killeagh GAA hurling club in his youth, and was asked by a current player to write an anthem in honour of the team. Kingfishr delivered, and the song received a rapturous reception when it debuted in Cork last Nivember.
Eoghan ‘McGoo’ McGrath (banjo) explains, “Fitz is from a small town in east Cork called Killeagh, after which the song is named. He played hurling for his club for close to 20 years before turning his hand to music due to injury. We wrote the song in support of his club. Specifically an East County final that they just won (hon the lads). It’s about the pride of belonging somewhere and references the local area heavily.”
Completed by vocalist/guitarist Eddie Keogh, Kingfishr operate in the sweet spot between contemporary indie-rock and a trad Irish heart, their songs powered by palpable emotions which inspire huge singalongs at ever-growing live shows. Beyond their own gigs, Kingfishr have been a hit on tour with James Bay, as well as supporting Bruce Springsteen, George Ezra, Tom Walker and Snow Patrol. They have also played the Glastonbury, Reading, Leeds, TRNSMT, Electric Picnic, Isle of Wight and Rock Werchter festivals. But you’re also just as likely to find them in intimate settings, regularly dropping in to play house parties or joining impromptu pub jams wherever they go. Regardless of the scale of the occasion, they consistently inspire fans to spread the word by word-of-mouth.
That’s not to say they’re rooted in the past. Their accomplished musicianship and easy-going charm gives them a natural appeal via socials, while their classic songwriting is exploding on streaming platforms – see over 80 million streams without yet releasing a studio album or EP for evidence. Their one album release so far, ‘Live From Dublin’, went straight to #1 on the Irish Independent Chart. Acclaim is mounting too. They won the Music Moves Europe Award at the start of this year and were nominated for Irish Breakthrough Artist at the RTÉ Choice Music Prize Awards.
