‘MerryGoRound‘ is an uptempo folk pop track. It is a metaphor for the dizzying pace of modern society and how difficult it is not to get swept up into materialistic ideologies. It is intended to make the listener pause and reflect upon their lifestyle.
The song kicks off with a bang akin to the alarm clock of life. In the first verse and pre chorus, the narrator observes the materialist actions of people in society, with a caveat emptor – enter into this lifestyle at your own risk. The risks being firstly that you won’t be able to get off the rollercoaster; and secondly, you risk losing your peace forever.
In the song the characters distract themselves from a lack of fulfilment and meaning on a never-ending rollercoaster of pleasure seeking behaviour and acquirement of possessions. Verse two describes the influence of peer pressure.
By the end bridge, the narrator’s resistance is crumbling and they are giving up hope on resisting the lure towards a more materialistic lifestyle. They describe how their mind is becoming addicted to the seduction of chasing achievements and how they can’t take a break from striving for more. The song ends with an “I told you so” sentiment – i.e. once you’re on the rollercoaster of modern life, you won’t ever get off of it.
