Irish songwriter Barry J Walsh releases blistering, harmony drenched, summer single ‘Suddenly June’
Suddenly June is the sound of tar melting on a summer street, a ‘99 ice cream running through your fingers, open tops and summer frocks, flops that flip and skinny dips. Surfs up. It follows hot on the heels of Walsh’s two scorching Powerpop singles from last year, Rescue Me and The Sound, which burned up the airwaves and frolicked about in a rolling tide of critical acclaim.
As Sunday morning bells toll on a chilly November stroll around town, “waking sinners and their doubts”, Suddenly June opens with some brightly strummed acoustics and gentling vibing keys before suddenly cranking into gear with some crunchy chords, a snaking riff and four to the floor tub thumping to waken the listening silence. From there, the sun starts peering through the cracks to curl up the edges of a slightly Blurred 60’s postcard, all Beach Boys finger in the ear harmonies and Kinks style knees-up before some stinging bee swarm Rickenbacker jingle jangle sees summer burst through like a charabang careening towards the nearest beach.
Suddenly June is a ‘count your blessings’ song, and that blessing is often right under your nose – “sometimes I forget that you are there, even though without you I’m nowhere” opines the singer with creeping self-awareness and not a little gratitude for his blessed lot.
Once again recorded at his son Oisin’s studio, with the Spearside frontman at the controls and providing drums and various instrumentation, Suddenly June will be released on Friday May 23rd on Barry’s own Rufus Records label and will be available worldwide and beyond on all the usual digital platforms.
