HousePlants, the creative force of Bell X1 frontman Paul Noonan and the innovative producer Daithí, continue to captivate audiences with their unique blend of electronic music. After the critical success of their 2021 Choice Prize-nominated album Dry Goods and the subsequent 2022 EP Seaglass, the duo has had a whirlwind summer playing to enthusiastic crowds at festivals across Ireland. Now, they’re back with a new single, ‘Someone Throws a Brick’, a tantalising preview of their forthcoming second album.
Following the success of previous singles ‘No Pushover’ and ‘Every Flower is a Field’, HousePlants continue to explore new sonic territories with ‘Someone Throws a Brick’. The track showcases their signature electronic soundscapes combined with lyrics that invite listeners to reflect on the world around them.
Speaking about the new track, Paul says:
“It seems that from sneering at Elon Musk talking with his bros in the bath about The Simulation Argument (see HousePlants – No Pushover), I too became interested in the idea that we are living a simulation, and am now a wannabe bro in Elon’s bath. I’m sure the Germans have a word for this…
What if, many millennia hence, there are lifeforms controlling what we are now experiencing as life, in some sort of evolution of a computer simulation? Pushing us around, in a Petri dish??
That we really have no agency – that the joys and devastation, cruelty and triumphs are at the whims of and for the entertainment of these beings?
My head hurts a little when I try to understand how this might be the case, or even that we’re living a simulation within a simulation, but sometimes I can touch it. Ultimately I don’t think it’s the case, but a fun one to think on… And as always, is window-dressing for making people move. We hope it does so.”

LYRICS
Are we already there
Are we already there
Are we all just code
Some brittle, some bold
They pushing us around
In a Petri dish
They pushing us around
Like little fish
Sometimes
Feels the deck is stacked
Sometimes
I don’t even try
Feeling
That the dice is loaded
Squeezing
The little guy
Till someone throws a brick
Are we already there
Are we already there
Just dancing from string
And we don’t know a thing
They pushing us around
In a Petri dish
They pushing us around
Like little fish
Sometimes
Feels the deck is stacked
Sometimes
I don’t even try
Feeling
That the dice is loaded
Squeezing
The little guy
Till someone throws a brick
I’m wearing paper clothes
Everybody knows
