Irish electronic duo HousePlants, the collaborative project between Bell X1 frontman Paul Noonan and producer Daithí, continue to deliver the feel-good energy that has become their hallmark, with the release of their latest video for Someone Throws a Brick. The track is taken from their newly released second album, Half Known Things, which dropped on October 18th.

Directed by Allyn Quigley and starring comedian and actor Fred Cooke, the video is both visually playful and conceptually intriguing. Originally born from a riff Daithí composed for one of Quigley’s short films, Yellowbelt, the video is a creative nod to the director’s connection with the track. Reflecting on the collaboration, Daithí shares:

“The music from Someone Throws a Brick started its life as a little riff for Allyn’s film, Yellowbelt, which I scored. So, it felt fitting to have him create the video for the final song! I love this video so much, I get a dumb little grin on my face every time I watch it.”

Paul Noonan adds: “We had bounced a few ideas around till Allyn sent us a vid of an unlikely dancer in a games arcade, and we had our thing… Dance machine instructing man in how to move, live, laugh, love! What greater allegory for how we’re all living a simulation, our strings pulled by smartarses of the future??”

The video’s concept draws on the simulation hypothesis, as director Quigley explains:

When I spoke to the guys about doing a video for this track we talked a bit about the simulation hypothesis and the idea that some people have put forward that we are living in some form of artificial or computer simulated reality. The track is so joyous and fun, I wanted to play with that idea but do something about breaking away from the monotony of the everyday and embracing life (simulated or not).”

HousePlants have built a reputation for their electrifying live performances, from festivals like All Together Now and Beyond the Pale, to opening slots for legends such as Chic and Leftfield. Their unique combination of energetic rhythms and heart-on-sleeve storytelling has earned them a loyal following. With Half Known Things, the band deliver more of the vibrant, feel-good energy that has become their hallmark, while venturing deeper into sonic experimentation and live band dynamics.

The result is an album full of heart, heat, and groove, with distorted textures and vibrant beats driving the music forward. Half Known Things pulses with life, capturing the raw, raucous energy of their live performances.

Standout tracks include “Swimming Pool,” an upbeat anthem that captures the messy joy of life, and “My Love My Umbrella,” a haunting ballad that draws inspiration from Irish writer John McGahern’s works. From start to finish, Half Known Things offers a sonic experience that is simultaneously introspective and celebratory, inviting listeners to lose themselves in the music, and most importantly, have fun.
