THREAD, the debut EP from Kerry songwriter Amano and Cork producer Kalabanx (Garry McCarthy/ GMCBeats), will be released on August 2nd.
THREAD is an experimental Irish-language music project reaching beyond the rules of genre and finding ephemeral homes in trip hop, afrohouse, sean-nós, drum and bass, pop and electronica.
With emotive hollers from the spirit of the land, melodies woven of past and future traditions and base-heavy soundscapes that encapsulate Éire in an age of metamorphosis, Amano and Kalabanx have set out to take listeners on a journey into unchartered waters for ceol gaelach.
The project is stitched together by the red thread of fate, a Japanese folkloric allegory for the earthly teachers we call our anamchairde or soulmates. The blood red pulse of the record is also a nod to An Dream Dearg and the ongoing struggle for language rights on the island of Ireland.
THREAD was recorded at The Kabin Studio in Cork City. Contributors to the EP include Liam Ó’Maonlaí on harp and vocals and Rónán Ó’Snodaigh on bodhrán.
Available on all major streaming platforms from August 2nd, an extended edit of THREAD including three additional live recordings will also be released exclusively on Bandcamp.
An sean bhean spins her wheel in the EP’s striking artwork which was co-illustrated by Irish artists Aoife Tierney and Darach Ó’Braonáin.
