Limerick soprano and classical crossover artist, Eve Stafford, released her debut single ‘The Room Next Door’ on Saturday. In a fitting tribute, the song was released on All Souls’ Day, November 2nd, a day dedicated to remembering those we have lost.
Rooted in Celtic tradition, families light candles and visit graves to remember their loved ones. This heartfelt piece soared to the number one position on the Irish iTunes charts upon its release, resonating deeply with listeners. The artist was overwhelmed with touching messages from fans who shared how they found solace in listening to the song in private on such a meaningful and reflective day.
‘The Room Next Door’ is a beautiful ballad penned by Eurovision-winning songwriter Brendan Graham (The Voice & Rock ’n’ Roll Kids) set to music by Denis Carey. The song tells of your deceased loved one close by in the room next door waiting for you to join them.
How it all began: during the summer, composer and musician Denis Carey approached Eve about this song. As a well-known local requiem mass soloist, and having worked with Denis many times, he felt Eve was the perfect choice. “When I first listened to the demo of the song, the tears began to fall and I was overcome with emotion” Eve shared. “It resonated with me profoundly, as I, like many, have experienced grief. I often find solace in signs that appear to me like feathers, robins and rainbows. I believe that things happen for a reason, and I felt that I was meant to sing this song in loving memory of my big sister Jane, whom we lost over a decade ago. I couldn’t believe the timing as I was in the midst of planning my first album, and I was thrilled that this song found its way to me.”
Eve, who has spent over a decade with her family business; C. Thompson & Sons Funeral Directors in Limerick, as their resident soloist, music coordinator, and celebrant, understands that saying goodbye is never easy. “Appropriate and gentle music can provide comfort in times of deep sorrow, especially when words fail us” she remarked. This moving song, described by Eve as “a beautiful tribute that would be perfect for a funeral service” carries with it a message of hope and remembrance.
Recorded at The Stables Studio, Cratloe, Co. Clare, the newly established recording space of renowned folk artist Ger O’Donnell of folk duo ‘Trasna.’ The track features Denis Carey, piano and keyboard, Anna Jane Ryan, violin with Ger O’Donnell, double bass and arpeggione. Mixed by Ger O’Donnell and mastered by Richard Dowling.
‘The Room Next Door’ is the first single release from Eve’s debut album ‘Songbird’ which promises a rich blend of Irish music across the ages, infused with classical influences and her unique signature soprano style will be released in December.
Eve studied with acclaimed vocal coach, Olive Cowpar for a number of years and in recent times with Irish operatic baritone, Brendan Collins. Whilst she has a background in classical music she enjoys singing a variety of genres and is a sought after wedding singer having performed at weddings in Munster for over 12 years.
