Bríd Lyons is a folk musician, singer, and songwriter from Kilkenny who weaves poetic lyricism with acoustic melodies to craft songs that explore the beauty of nature and the complexity of the human experience.
Drawing inspiration from artists like Hozier, Ye Vagabonds, Lisa Hannigan, and Anna Mieke, Bríd’s music blends Celtic roots with an ethereal quality. Her sound moves seamlessly from haunting a cappella melodies to intricate, rhythmically layered acoustic arrangements, all grounded in the timeless traditions of folk music.
In recent years, Bríd has been selected as one of the KCLR representatives in the HotPress Local Hero Talent Search and has played several prestigious gigs such as the Ruby Sessions and Whelan’s Ones to Watch.
Bríd has also supported Irish folk giants such as Sharon Shannon in Whelan’s Main Room, Lisa O’Neill, Rónán Ó’Snodaigh, and Myles O’Reilly at the beautiful St. Canice’s Cathedral, and opened for Jerry Fish on Kilkenny Day.
Bríd has been building her identity as a composer and performer for the past 9 years, working both independently and in collaboration with others. Her single, October, released in late 2021, marked her debut as a solo artist. Her second single, Mother, released in 2022, was awarded The Circle Sessions Song of the Year.
She followed up with I Must Go in April 2023, the third single from her debut EP, Tied to the Turf, which was released that May. Bríd then embarked on a co-headline Irish tour that May, selling out the Hole in the Wall in her hometown of Kilkenny.
This past November, Bríd released Lantern Song, a declaration of a new creative era marked by emotional depth and maturity. The release was accompanied by a music video, further immersing listeners in Bríd’s unique artistic vision.
As she reconnects with her creativity, Bríd is preparing for an exciting 2025, with four more releases in the pipeline. Her work has been featured in IMRO, Golden Plec, The Last Mixed Tape, Ragged Cast, Hotpress, and many more, establishing her as a compelling voice in the Irish folk scene and an artist to watch.
They say absence makes the heart grow fonder, and ‘Mothlight’ tells the story of a love both distant and deeply intertwined—bound by shared skies, moonlight, and the quiet moments that linger long after they’ve passed. This folk ballad captures the delicate tension between longing and connection, written with a sense of intimacy and raw vulnerability. The lyrics weave a tale of both yearning and gratitude, where the mothlight becomes a metaphor for tenderness and fragility in the fading light of a long Summer evening.
Ultimately, ‘Mothlight’ is a testament to the enduring power of love and connection across the distance, wrapped in a mysterious and melancholic folk ambiance that lingers like the glow of a dying candle.
‘Mothlight’ came to life on a summer trip, where Bríd realised that a connection that was still in its infancy back home was a meaningful and powerful one, and that it took the distance to put it all in perspective. Years later, in a dramatic twist of fate, that very relationship ended on the morning Bríd went to the studio to record ‘Mothlight’, casting new shades on the meaning of the song and exposing an irreplicable vulnerability in Bríd’s vocal performance.
Musically, ‘Mothlight’ is anchored by a soft, atmospheric arrangement that complements its lyrical storytelling, and features fiddle accompaniment by Jayne Pomplas. The song was recorded and mixed by Gavin Doyle and mastered by Martin Quinn.
