Leila Jane is a talented singer-songwriter in the Alternative Pop genre, based in Dublin. With vocals that have been compared to the likes of Janis Joplin, Sandy Denny, Jess Glynn, Robyn and Sia, Leila Jane has been successfully melding her influences to create her own style of alternative pop. As well as honing her sound, Leila Jane likes to infuse her songs with strong messages of triumph over darkness.
Her music takes inspiration from her early blues influences. Imelda May, a well-known artist, recognized the unique sense of heart in Leila’s music and awarded her the ‘Imelda May Scholarship’ at BIMM Institute Dublin.
‘Judgement Call’ is a departure from the hard-done-by perspectives of many Leila Jane hits, particularly of ‘Tightrope’ and ‘Poison’. Perhaps courageous in a different sense, this time Leila is taking the reins of the relationship, causing her fancy to beg for ‘’time’’ and ‘’taking things slow’’. We could say it is quite the role reversal and also ironic, seeing as this is Leila Jane’s most danceable ‘pop’ song in a world where the genre lends itself to themes of instant romantic gratification.
To craft this quirky bop, Leila Jane worked with producers Sam Stevenson and Michael Heffernan. She initially came up with the chorus and a verse on what felt like the first day of Spring in 2023.
“It had been a long winter and all of a sudden it was a peaceful sunny day. I had just visited this cool studio, meeting one of my recording engineers for the first time. I had this dreamy sense of positive beginnings as I walked home across the grassy parks and the song began to come to me’’.
As time went by, the chorus stuck in Leila Jane’s head. It wasn’t until Autumn of the same year that she decided to write the rest of the song and get on with recording it. The music video will also be available on the release day.
“In the music video, I wanted (in a darkly humorous sense) to depict chasing after the stable, sensible relationships, instead of the cliché of chasing the thrills and butterflies of more unstable relationships.”
Untangled’ is Leila Jane’s debut full-length album and will be released on 22nd November 2024. The title is a reference to the lyric: “untangle this restless heart and let it make new roots’’ from ‘Careful Wanderer’. The idea of freeing oneself through expression is at the forefront of Leila Jane’s artistry and ‘Untangled’ is a homage to that.
The album may have variations in sounds, some with live instrumentation, others with electronic production- but the theme of unspoken emotional truths and Leila’s unique voice remains a haunting constant. Her songwriting is conscientious, and as she is set free, her wish is that the listener is too. Healing cannot occur until we have compassion for the most unbearable parts of our experience. This album is Leila Jane in her unwavering and rawest form waiting for you to discover the depths of her artistry.
