After more than a decade of quiet evolution and sonic exploration,
Dublin-based Electric Penguins return with their long-awaited third studio album,
The Way Lights a Fire, Pt.1— out now via Bohemia Records.
Marking their first full-length release since 2010’s critically acclaimed II, the new album showcases the band’s signature blend of cinematic dreamscapes, vintage psychedelia, progressive electronica, and alt-rock soul. It’s a culmination of years of artistic growth and creative rebirth.
The album features previously released singles “When The World Is On Your Shoulders,” “Close Your Eyes (And Try Again),” and “Oxygen” — each offering a window into the band’s expansive, genre-defying sound.
Formed in Dublin in 2005 by Mark Cummins and Paul Murphy,Electric Penguins originally emerged as a trio, releasing their debut Goodbye from the Electric Penguins in 2006. Their sophomore album, II, followed in 2010, with the lead single “Highgate Hill” becoming a cult hit — championed by BBC Radio London’s Robert Elms as his track of the year.
In the years since, the band has remained creatively active, contributing music to Channel 4’s Sounds From The City series and collaborating with artists like Kim Wilde, remixing tracks from her Wilde Winter Songbook.
The Way Lights a Fire, Pt.1 also introduces a refreshed lineup: Paddy Kiernan on bass and Sack’s Tony Brereton on drums, with the late Barry Grace contributing piano — a deeply felt presence on this record.
