“Mirrormouth” is the second solo album of Branwen Kavanagh.
Fresh from a 2024 of releasing two collaborative albums of original songs with Rufous Nightjar and Twin Headed Wolf, Branwen returns with a solo album of new material entitled “Mirrormouth”.
Produced by Simon O Reilly, this album is a wash of distorted telephone vocals, subtle synths, tempered guitars and stacks of pedals with the occasional storm of grinding noise.
The album is an honest reflection on love, with nine songs illuminating nine distinct experiences and written over many years of Branwens’ life. The album reveals itself as a stripped back piece, centred on guitar and voice.
Branwen references their Mothers’ poetry and portrays each song as a “postcard to a darker hour” crystallising moments both cherished and poignant.
Branwen wanted the album to sound like a record that someone might have pulled up from the bottom of a lake. Nostalgic, distorted and hazey, like many of our repeating memories and worn out love stories, with songs, like hymns follow repeating patterns that drift between clarity and being flooded in the tides of noise and storms.
The title Mirrormouth was inspired by a dream that Branwen had about Tom Waits who had a mirror over his mouth. Anyone who spoke to him would see their own mouth moving where his was. It brought about ideas of reflection in relationship, projection and perception. And how much of what we see is a reflection of ourselves.
There will be a limited run of CDs of “Mirrormouth” for sale on Bandcamp.
