April Shares Fantasy-Shattering Single, ‘TV Show’ via FADER Label June 12th
April Lawlor, known mononymously as ‘April’ shares “TV Show” via the FADER Label.
The last single to come before her upcoming EP, ‘An Axe to Grind’(DATE TBD), the track strikes the perfect balance between rose-tinted whimsy and melancholic reminiscence; capturing the feverish haze of heartbreak.
“TV Show” is about a whirlwind love; the type that sweeps you off your feet and leaves just as quickly as it came. We hear April reckon with reality, parsing through what was real and what felt real.
“I met you on a TV Show / Felt quite like a dream / Was it all a joke?” she croons over gently pinging harmonics that later give way to steadily thrumming synths.
Over the three minute track, listeners follow April through a masterfully assembled amalgamation of soundscapes. Starting off dreamy, one would think the track is bound to be a picturesque love song, until the tone shifts to reflect the uncanny reality of the situation, building to a climax only to suddenly drop off after April quips: “You told me that / Was all the time that we had.”
Sonically emulating the feeling of whiplash so characteristic to turbulent relationships, April shares with listeners that relationships often change; sometimes as abruptly as one changes a TV channel.
April shares, “‘TV show’ ended up feeling like a dream. It’s about this feeling I tend to experience, this kind of blurring between reality and fantasy — especially when it comes to love. I fell in love and when it was over I wondered if it was even real. It felt like I had left my body and just come back to reality. Sonically this song really expresses that for me, it feels kind of seasick. It’s vulnerable and a real piece of myself.”
