Belfast is a deeply personal reflection on Tom Gee’s first four years living in the city, capturing the highs, lows, and unexpected moments that have shaped his life there.
With a characteristically honest and occasionally tongue-in-cheek perspective, the song opens with Tom’s bemusement at Belfast’s seemingly endless supply of churches. From there, it moves into more difficult territory, exploring periods of mental health struggles and the devastating experience of miscarriage, before ultimately arriving at the joy and transformation that came with the birth of his son.
Rather than presenting these experiences as a simple journey from darkness to light, ‘Belfast’ embraces the complexity of everything in between. It is a song about finding your footing in a new place, navigating grief and uncertainty, and discovering moments of hope, resilience, and connection along the way.
The track features beautiful piano work from Belfast-based artist M Alexander, alongside haunting backing vocals from the incredible Sarah McCreedy. Drawing influence from artists including Foy Vance, Sara Bareilles, and John Mayer, the song blends intimate storytelling with a warm, melodic arrangement that allows Tom’s lyrics to sit at the forefront.
