The all-female garage band, Shark School, released their impressive debut album Selachimorpha on Friday, 26 June. The album follows a strong run of singles from the band, earning them a growing reputation as one of Ireland’s most exciting acts.
Shark School are Nora Staunton, Peggy Ford and Meg Bruce, a trio quickly making their mark on the Irish music scene. They have shared stages with acclaimed Irish acts including New Dad, The Love Buzz and Elaine Malone, and performed at festivals such as Beyond the Pale, All Together Now, Electric Picnic and Whelan’s Ones to Watch. Having toured across Ireland and the UK, the band are known for energetic live sets sharpened by their sarcastic wit.
The band describe their sound as “sonic assault with more bite than a Great White’s dentures! If Wet Leg and Nirvana had a child and raised it with Catholic guilt…”, a fitting introduction to the world of Selachimorpha. From the opening track, ‘Chondrichthyes’, listeners are pulled into Shark School’s chaotic, abrasive soundscape. The album delivers an atmosphere that fully envelops the listener right up until the final note, leaving you ready to hit repeat again and again.
IMRO’s standout track is ‘Shark Song’, one of several moments that give the album its force. It brings together everything the trio does best: jagged guitar riffs, driving drums and punchy vocals. Tight yet chaotic, it captures everything you’ll come to love and expect from Shark School.
