Formed in Cork in 1998, Boa Morte can be best described as a melodic slowcore band interwoven with elements of folk, alt-americana and post-rock. Despite only releasing four albums since their inception, the band are now preparing to release two albums in a six-month period.
Last week, Boa Morte released their first single from this ambitious two album project, titled ‘The Following On’. The track features quiet vocal melodies, a repetitive acoustic guitar motif and subtle percussion, before additional instrumentation enriches the second half of the song.
The song can almost be divided into three stages: first, a conventional catchy verse, supported by the previously mentioned acoustic guitar motif; second, a bleaker middle section spearheaded by the reintroduction of the drums and faint background vocals; and finally, a return to calm as the song gently fades out in its final minute. The single highlights the strength of Boa Morte’s melodic and creative instincts and serves as an enticing preview of the first full length release of the project.
The first of the two-albums, Signal:Lost, is due for release September 18th, 2026, with the second album, The Following On, set to follow in February via Gare du Nord Records. The albums combine earlier demo material with new recordings, and the exploring of these different arrangements in the studio.
The band recently reunited with producer James Darkin to record the two albums. Darkin previously worked with Boa Morte on their previous album Before there was Air (2019) and now returns to produce the bands fifth and sixth albums. Despite this reconnection, Boa Morte are keen to differentiate these upcoming albums from their previous records, by rethinking basslines, experimenting with oblique chords and rhythmic patterns, and making a conscience effort to deviate even more from the straightforward and familiar.
If Signal:Lost represents a wayward distress-signal, it is the band’s innate melodic compass that brings everything firmly back on track.
