Songs of the Irish American and Canadian Diaspora

June 11, 2021

Songs of the Irish American and Canadian Diaspora, is the second of two documentaries made by the Irish Heritage Trust/Strokestown National Famine Museum/Quinnipiac University Famine Institute (All under the aegis of the Dept of Foreign Affairs Emigrant Support Scheme).  The documentaries are centred around songs by leading Irish songwriter Brendan Graham which recognise significant events in our history both at home and abroad.

The video includes performances by Seán Keane, The Chieftains with Liam Neeson, Cathy Jordan, Anthony Kearns with former Wings guitarist, Laurence Juber, and the Irish Tenors from Ellis Island, introduced by Martin Sheen.

Professor E.Moore Quinn, Dept of Sociology and Anthropology, College of Charleston SC., provides commentary on the songs and their ‘fit’ within the song writing tradition of Ireland.

In other Brendan Graham related news and as part of New Zealand’s contribution to tomorrow’s Global Wellness Day, a live performance of You Raise Me Up will be streamed worldwide. The performance will be by Tenor Boyd Haven and the choir of Te Whanau Pukehuia with a Maori blessing interpolated with the song.
