Other Voices | Derry – Londonderry 2014 Announced

November 21, 2013

Following on from the recent announcement regarding the twelfth Other Voices pilgrimage to Dingle this December, the world renowned music television series today revealed that Derry/Londonderry is also on the musical itinerary for a second visit, following the hugely successful inaugural Other Voices weekend earlier this year in the UK City of Culture 2013.other voices

Other Voices will strike out for Derry/Londonderry in February 2014, stopping off to record music and musings on February 7th, 8th and 9th. The stunning Glassworks building will once again play host to a galaxy of local and international musical talent all of which will be streamed live to a number of local venues, while the Banter Sessions and the IMRO Other Room will also be filmed in the City of Song. The hugely popular Other Voices Music Trail will run in venues and spaces across the city, bringing the spirit of Other Voices to neighbourhoods and communities across the Derry City Council area.

Actor Aidan Gillen will once again host the show, presenting the recordings and events in both Dingle and Derry/Londonderry. Already scheduled to perform in St. James’ Church on the Dingle leg of the Other Voices gathering are David Gray, Hozier, Lisa O’Neill, Mogwai, Patty Griffin, John Grant, Asgeir, Agnes Obel and Lulu James with more yet to be announced. The line-up for Derry/Londonderry remains firmly under wraps and will be announced just after Christmas.

Philip King, series editor, spoke of the return to Derry commenting, “Last year we had a remarkable experience in Derry. We met really talented musicians and production people, forged a suite of partnerships with CultureTech and heard just great music. We are delighted to return to Derry to nurture and develop the relationships established between Dingle and Derry last year. We have an opportunity to build an enduring legacy over the next three years, share our knowledge and learning with the city and establish a renewable and refreshable resource making this singing city audible and visible the world over”

The Minister for Culture, Arts and Leisure Carál Ní Chuilín welcomed the return to Derry.  She said:  “Other Voices is one of those unique and special events that leaves a lasting impression. It offers the full musical package and provides experience for performers and back stage people alike. It captured the spirit of City of Culture 2013 and I am so pleased that it has agreed to return to Derry in February even bigger and better than before and expanding their music trail to communities surrounding the City centre as part of my Department’s approach to strategic development of the North West of Ireland – it’s an event not to be missed.”

Mayor of Derry, Cllr Martin Reilly said:

“I am delighted that Other Voices is set to return to the city again following the success of the event during our 2013 UK City of Culture celebrations, an event which achieved phenomenal success in terms of involving local talent and showcasing our city to an international audience.  As Mayor I have had the opportunity to meet with Philip and his team in the City and to explore the possibilities of a return visit.  Other Voices February 2014 production will complement the City of Culture Legacy Plan which has a special attention on Derry-Londonderry as a City of Music in 2014. This opportunity in 2014 will build on community involvement, educational programmes and national and international showcase for local talent from this city as well as inviting visitors to see what Derry has to offer.”
