Tom Dunne Appointed Chairperson-Elect of IMRO

The Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO) is pleased to announce that Tom Dunne has been elected Chairperson-Elect of the organisation. The IMRO Board voted to appoint him to the role at its meeting on 3rd December, and he will begin his three-year term when he succeeds current Chairperson Eleanor McEvoy in May 2026.

Eleanor McEvoy, who will conclude her tenure after many years of dedicated service to IMRO—both as Chair and as a long-standing board member—welcomed the Board’s decision:

“I am delighted to announce, on behalf of the Board of IMRO, that Tom Dunne has been elected as the next Chair and will take up the role when I step down in May. We are truly excited for this next stage and reassured knowing that IMRO will continue to thrive under Tom’s capable and thoughtful leadership.”

About Tom Dunne

Tom Dunne is best known as the lead singer and co-songwriter of the Irish band Something Happens, who rose to prominence in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Signed to Virgin Records, the band enjoyed two No. 1 Irish albums, sold-out national tours, extensive international touring—including fourteen tours of the United States—and a succession of hit singles.

Tom later established a distinguished career in broadcasting. His alternative music programme “Pet Sounds” on Today FM became one of Ireland’s most influential music radio shows, inspiring a series of compilation albums—Tom Dunne’s 30 Best Irish Hits—which achieved multi-platinum success. He went on to present major talk programmes on Newstalk Radio and today hosts the station’s flagship music show, continuing to champion emerging and established Irish and international artists.

His media work also includes regular television presenting and writing for The Irish Examiner and The Sunday Times. Alongside his broadcasting and journalism, Tom remains an active musician, performing both with Something Happens and in collaboration with Fiachna Ó Braonáin of Hothouse Flowers.

Speaking about his appointment Tom Dunne said “I am delighted and feel very privileged to be the new Chair elect at IMRO. I am particularly honoured to be taking over from Eleanor McEvoy who over her nine years as Chair has helped IMRO grow into one of the most respected and successful music rights organisations in the world. I eagerly look forward to taking up the position in May.”

IMRO Chief Executive Victor Finn, together with the wider IMRO team, look forward to working with Tom as he steps into the role in 2026 and as the organisation embarks on an exciting new chapter.

Oisín Leech to Perform at Solstice Arts Centre with Special Guest Steve Gunn

Following an extraordinary two-year run of international touring and critical acclaim, Irish songwriter Oisín Leech will return to his native Navan for a special hometown performance at the Solstice Arts Centre on Sunday, 30th November. The show will feature very special guest Steve Gunn, who has just released his highly acclaimed new album Daylight Daylight on No Quarter Records.

Leech, who is Meath-born, released his debut solo album Cold Sea last year to widespread international praise. Since its release on Canadian indie label Outside Music, his solo career has flourished, with sold-out headline shows at The Sugar Club in Dublin, London’s Lexington and Bush Hall, and a full house at L’Archipel in Paris. Cold Sea was recorded on the Donegal coast with Brooklyn artist Steve Gunn producing, Tony Garnier (Bob Dylan’s longtime bassist and musical director) on bass, Dónal Lunny on bouzouki, and Róisín McGrory on fiddle.

Following the album’s release, Leech has been in high demand. He performed live in session from Maida Vale for BBC 6 Music, appeared on Other Voices, sang on RTÉ’s “Fanning at Whelan’s,” and played a sold-out Rough Trade in-store event in London. Cold Sea went on to become an Album of the Year pick for MOJO, UNCUT, The Irish Times, Hot Press, The Thin Air, and more, with BBC 6 Music awarding it their coveted Album of the Year as chosen by Cerys Matthews.

The momentum continued into 2025, with Leech receiving invitations to perform at Glastonbury 2025, Green Man Festival, and the Galway International Arts Festival. He also toured extensively across Europe and the UK with Gaz Coombes (Supergrass) and Tindersticks, performing at iconic venues including the Royal Albert Hall and La Salle Pleyel in Paris. His London Union Chapel performance even saw Ron Sexsmith join him onstage for the encore. Irish audiences have since seen him grace the stages of the Olympia Theatre and the National Concert Hall.

Alongside his touring schedule, Leech continues to curate Joey Procida’s Folk Club in Navan, which has welcomed artists such as Andy Irvine, Lisa Hannigan, Willy Mason, and Dónal Lunny.

Now, after an extraordinary journey with Cold Sea, Leech is “bringing it all back home” for what has become a must-see annual performance at the Solstice Arts Centre. For this special night, he will be joined by Steve Gunn, who will open the evening with a solo set at 8pm before joining Leech and his band for the main performance at 9pm. The Navan show will also feature musicians Graham Heaney (double bass) and Saramai Leech and Cormac O’Keeffe of Perlee, among others, contributing on synths and electric guitars.

Audiences can expect stunning performances from Cold Sea, along with brand new material presented by a stellar ensemble.

Limited seats remain.

Brendan Graham at 80: The Arrow of Time Debut Album Release

Internationally acclaimed Irish songwriter and bestselling novelist Brendan Graham has released his debut album, The Arrow of Time. The album, now available to stream across all major platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, and SoundCloud, was officially launched on 3rd October 2025.

Graham is best known for writing two Eurovision-winning songs, Rock ‘n’ Roll Kids and The Voice, as well as penning the lyrics of the global anthem You Raise Me Up, the latter made famous by artists including Josh Groban and Westlife.

Beginning his songwriting career in 1968, Graham marks a milestone with The Arrow of Time, a powerful album that coincides with his 80th birthday and reflects a profound, personal journey through music and memory.

The Arrow of Time revisits some of Graham’s most loved compositions, reimagined with fresh emotional depth and creative collaboration. Highlights include:

  • A moving re-recording of Rock ‘n’ Roll Kids, with Graham reuniting with Paul Harrington and Charlie McGettigan, whose unforgettable Eurovision triumph in 1994 propelled the song to fame.
  • A spellbinding, spoken-word rendition of The Voice with Eimear Quinn, blending Graham’s lyrical poetry with Quinn’s ethereal vocal grace.
  • A powerful interpretation of You Raise Me Up, where Graham’s narration is set against composer Rolf Løvland’s solo piano performance of his timeless melody, offering listeners a new, intimate connection to the beloved classic.

Graham’s songs have reached audiences worldwide, performed and recorded by artists such as Josh Groban with Aretha Franklin, The Gipsy Kings, Johnny Mathis, Secret Garden, and Karen Matheson. His music has also featured at major events, from the Olympic Games and the opening of the Northern Ireland Assembly to the Super Bowl and the White House.

The Arrow of Time is produced by the highly respected musician and producer, Feargal Murray. Murray is no stranger to Graham’s work, having recently recorded a highly acclaimed album of Graham’s songs with the current Gradam Ceol winner, Cathy Jordan.

Graham is a master storyteller in both literature and song, whose work has helped shape Ireland’s cultural identity. Through songs such as Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears (The Annie Moore Story), Orphan Girl, Crucán na bPáiste, The Coast of Labrador (Sean Keane), and Across the Rio Grande (The Chieftains and Liam Neeson) as well as his best-selling ‘documentary novel’ of the Great Famine, The Whitest Flower, Graham has brought Ireland’s history vividly to life.

“The Arrow of Time marks a special moment in my journey, my debut album, released to celebrate my 80th birthday. Until now, I have been the songwriter behind the songs, never the voice on the albums. What better way to honour this milestone than by collaborating with the extraordinary artists who have brought my words to life?

Creating this album has been a joyful and deeply emotional experience, filled with gratitude for the incredible people I’ve met along the way. I hope these songs continue to find a place in your heart, just as they have in mine.”

The Gold Standard: Winners Revealed at the 2025 IMRO Radio Awards

The 2025 IMRO Radio Awards took place this evening at the Lyrath Estate Hotel, Kilkenny, bringing together the best of the Irish radio industry to celebrate another remarkable year.

Hosted by Dermot Whelan, the event recognised excellence across news, music, sport, current affairs, entertainment, and innovation, with winners announced in 42 categories.

Chair of the IMRO Radio Awards committee, Chris Doyle saidCongratulations to all of this year’s winners and shortlisted nominees. Your work represents the very best of Irish radio; creative, compelling, and deeply connected with audiences.  The standard across the board has been exceptional, and it’s a true privilege to celebrate the talent, passion, and dedication that make our industry so vibrant. Radio continues to thrive, innovate, and inspire, and tonight we honour not just the achievements, but excellence that defines our sector. It’s a proud moment to stand alongside such outstanding colleagues and celebrate together.”

This year’s ceremony saw the largest number of entries in over ten years. The Awards continue to showcase the strength and creativity of radio across the island of Ireland, highlighting its vital role in informing, entertaining, and connecting listeners.

The evening also paid tribute to the 2025 Hall of Fame inductees – John Bowman (RTÉ), Fr. Brian D’Arcy (BBC Radio Ulster), and Scott Williams (ONIC) – each honoured for their outstanding contribution and lifelong dedication to Irish broadcasting. This year’s Outstanding Achievement was awards to RTÉ Radio 1’s Liveline at 40.

Eleanor McEvoy, Chair of the main sponsors IMRO said “At its heart, radio has always been local. It’s rooted in community – it’s rooted  in the accents, the humour, the news, and the songs that mean something to the people who tune in every day. When a station reflects its listeners, when it champions the artists and songwriters who live among them, something magic happens. People hear themselves in it. They feel seen, and they feel connected. That connection matters. Because if everything starts to sound the same, if all we hear, wherever we travel, are the same playlists, the same stories –  then society loses something vital. We lose the colour, the richness, the individuality that makes every city, every town, and every county, unique. As a songwriter, I know how important that first play on a local station can be. It’s not just airplay –  it’s belief,  and it’s validation. There’s nothing that can give you that endorsement in the way that Radio can, and it’s always been utterly vital – in helping artists find their voice, and in helping audiences find their soundtrack to their lives”

Speaking at the event, Coimisiún Na Mean Commissioner Aoife MacEvilly said “Coimisiún na Meán is delighted to be sponsoring this year’s IMRO radio awards. I would like to congratulate all involved in tonight’s success. It’s been busy. We have, since 2023, re-licensed 24 commercial radio broadcasters. Sound & Vision continues to support the sector with €1.5million going to radio stations and €1.6 million to independent radio producers in 2024. Separately, our currently open News Reporting Scheme includes €3 million ringfenced for commercial radio by Minister Patrick O’Donovan. The development of our new Broadcasting Services Strategy will involve extensive research and consultation activities, including an environmental and economic analysis of the current and future Irish broadcasting landscape, and audience research to better understand evolving needs and expectations. We look forward to engaging with radio stations to hear yours views on how radio can continue to play a vital role in serving Irish audiences.”

In 1969 Brian was ordained as a Passionist priest. He served as a superior and parish priest at Mount Argus in Dublin, Crossgar and in Enniskillen at St. Gabriel’s Retreat, The Graan.

Brian D’Arcy began his career in journalism in 1967 writing for various magazines and became the first priest in Ireland admitted into the National Union of Journalists.

In August 1970 he was appointed as editor of ‘The Cross’ magazine and resided in Mount Argus until 1975, when he was appointed production editor of the Catholic Communications Centre in Dublin.

Since 1976 Brian has written a weekly column for ‘The Sunday World’, and continues to the present time. Brian has also been a presenter for RTE Radio since 1977.

In 2006 Brian published his memoirs in ‘A Different Journey’ which was a bestseller in Ireland and he has since written two other books on contemporary spiritual issues – ’Through the Year with Brian D’Arcy’ and ‘A Little Bit of Healing’ and ‘It Has to Be Said’.

Brian D’Arcy was born in Enniskillen in 1945. He was educated at St. Michael’s in Enniskillen, University College Dublin, Berkeley College in San Francisco and the Catholic Theology Union in Chicago. Brian continues to live in Enniskillen and away from broadcasting he enjoys sports, walking and reading.

Scott Williams

Scott Williams has played a pivotal role in the development of independent radio in Ireland.

The first voice heard on the independent airwaves when FM104 (then Capital Radio) launched in July 1989, he has held may roles as presenter, Programme Director and Chief Executive during his career. Scott was involved in station launches for Capital Radio, FM104, Limerick’s Live 95FM, Lite FM, Dublin’s Q102 and more recently Pride Vibes, the innovative LGBTQ+ service, for Wireless Ireland.

During his term as Chairman of IBI he espoused a policy of collaboration across the radio sector to achieve strategic objectives. His ‘Choose Radio’ marketing initiative paved the way for the establishment of Radiocentre Ireland. The launch of ‘The Irish Radioplayer’ app in 2015 marked the first major sectoral initiative between RTE and IBI. Initially launching with 43 services, the app is now the portal to all Irish independent and RTE stations. Scott served as Chairman of the Irish Radioplayer Steering Board from 2015 to 2024.

Scott served as Chairman of JNLR from 2018 – 2025 and over that time oversaw the evolution of the survey over successive contract terms including a new software analysis tool from Adserve and strategic development to include digital listening alongside traditional FM delivery.

In 2008 Scott received a PPI Gold Radio Award for the innovative ‘Make Small Print Big Print’action campaign which aired on his Q102 Drivetime programme and he was awarded an Outstanding Achievement Award in 2016 for his work on the origination and delivery of the Irish Radioplayer app.

From 2017 to 2025 Scott served as Group Content Director for Wireless Ireland across FM104, Dublin’s Q102, LMFM, Limerick’s Live 95, Belfast’s U105, Cork’s 96FM and C103. Over that period he led the teams to improved JNLR ratings and custom content offerings.

Scott stepped down from Wireless in Jan 2025 and now runs a small consultancy service – Billboard Productions.

The IMRO Radio Awards Hall of Fame continues to honour the legends of Irish radio – those whose voices, vision, and leadership have defined the medium and inspired generations.
