CMC – third Nights of New Music

The Contemporary Music Centre and the Irish Composers’ Collective join forces to present a third Night of New Music in the Kevin Barry Room of the National Concert Hall, 27 April 2011. Following on from the  other highly successful Nights of New Music, this night begins again with The Contemporary Music Centre’s new music::new Ireland salon series, followed by the Irish Composers’ Collective monthly concert, with a special offer on wine and tapas in the National Concert Hall during the break.

The Contemporary Music Centre’s new music::new Ireland salon, 6pm – 7pm, 27 April 2011, features composer/performer Karen Power in a collaborative work entitled Movement of Sound with dancer/choreographer Mary Nunan. Movement of Sound seeks to combine movement and sound in a way that will speak across a number of artistic platforms, attracting fresh and untried audiences and creating new and more complete experiences of movement, sound, movement through sound and sound through movement. The final piece which involves musicians Kate Ellis (cello) and Deirdre O’Leary (clarinet) will tour 16 – 19 June to Cork, Limerick and Dublin. The project is funded by the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaion.
The new music::new Ireland salon series aims to encourage newcomers and enthusiasts alike to engage with the music of Irish Composers. Each performance takes place in an informal atmosphere with dialogue encouraged between composers, performers and audience. This is the Centre’s eight series and this year to celebrate 25 years of the Contemporary Music Centre and as part of a series of events planned for 2011, the salons will take place across the year on the last Wednesday of each month, apart from the summer months (June, July and August).

Her initial interest in composition came during her undergraduate degree in University College Cork (UCC). In 2009 she completed a PhD in acoustic and electroacoustic composition at SARC (Sonic Arts Research Centre), Belfast, with Prof. Michael Alcorn.  Karen’s compositional interests are constantly shifting, transforming and re-shaping, with current projects including a video and sound collaboration.

Mary started her professional career as a member of Dublin Contemporary Dance Theatre (1981-86) and then went on to become a founder member and Artistic Director of Daghdha Dance Company from 1988-1999.  In addition to choreographing her own work Mary has also been involved since 2002 as a collaborative artist and performer, in the Maya Lila collective, under the directorship of Joan Davis. Mary has been Course Director of the MA in Contemporary Dance Performance at the University of Limerick since 1999
The Irish Composers’ Collective is pleased to welcome the Quiet Music Ensemble – John Godfrey, Séan Mac Erlaine & Isla de Ziah to their monthly concert series and this month they will perform the works of Alyson Barber, Solfa Carlile, Patrick Connolly, Susan Geaney, Aristides Llaneza and Adam McCartney, 830pm – 930pm, 27 April 2011, pre-concert talk at 815pm..

Vantastival 2011

Vantastival, one of Ireland’s newest independent festivals, is returning to Dunany Estate in Co. Louth this May bank holiday weekend and Alabama 3 Acoustic and Unplugged have been added to the increasingly impressive line up.  The acoustic outfit, featuring Larry Love, Aurora Dawn, Rock Freebase and Harpo Strangelove, are touring the UK this March and April, and are due to appear at Vantastival on Sunday, May 1st.  Whipping Boy, The Frank and Walters, Duke Special, Wallis Bird, Jamie Lawson, The Cast of Cheers and Donal Dineen playing with Congolese guitarist Niwel Tsumbu are all on the bill for the second Vantastival festival.

Vantastival earned great praise last year for its endorsement of the Irish music scene and a huge number of up-and-coming unsigned acts are on the line-up.  Some, like Miracle Bell, The Riptide Movement, The Hot Sprockets and Sounds of System Breakdown, appeared at the inaugural event last year and are making a welcome return, while a host of new acts will also perform. Sweet Jane, fresh from their appearance at SXSW in Texas, will be joined by We Cut Corners, Windings, Bipolar Empire, Bill Coleman, King Kong Club winners The Cujo Family, and many more.

Vantastival is a celebration of campervan culture and a top class music festival rolled into one.  Three stages host over 70 live acts from Friday 29th April to Sunday 1st May, while a range of activities focusing on the campervan lifestyle are an interesting addition to the only festival of its kind in Ireland.  The BRING YOUR OWN BEER policy and €85 weekend camping tickets make it more affordable than most music festivals in this country, and the family-friendly nature of the event is a bonus, with free entry for children under 14, a range of children's entertainment and a family camping area.

Additional features at Vantastival 2011 include the Gramophone Disco, Guth Gafa documentary film tent and an open mic stage, as well as a Campervan Cook-off, Scrapheap Challenge, food and craft stalls and a number of quirky art installations.  €40 day tickets are available, with €30 weekend entry for 14-17 year olds.  Campervans are welcome to park on site at no extra charge, but you don't have to have a campervan to enjoy all that's on offer and there is a dedicated tent campsite for those without vans. See www.vantastival.com for more details.

Declan O’Rourke Live in HMV Grafton St

HMV will welcome Declan O’ Rourke to its Grafton St store on Saturday April 9th at 12.30pm. The platinum record selling singer-songwriter will be playing live and signing copies of his highly anticipated third album Mag Pai Zai.

The release of Mag Pag Zai represents an exciting venture for Declan O’ Rourke; it is the first album to be released on his own record label Rimecoat Records. Recorded primarily at The Factory and Windmill in Dublin and mixed at the world-famous Platinum Sound Recording Studios in New York, Mag Pag Zai sees the return of some old collaborators such as Steve Wickham.

That Declan O’Rourke is in a new, different and more elevated place as a songwriter is proven by the sheer quality of the material on Mag Pai Zai. From the deceptively simple opening song, Slieve Bloom and the heart-wrenching tale found within Langley’s Requiem to the life affirming Be Brave And Believe, he has fortified his talent with a firm mixture of intuitive lyrics and pure melodies.

Declan follows the release of Mag Pai Zai with a nationwide tour in May and June which will see him play in Limerick, Cork, Galway and Dublin to name a few. For more information on the tour log on to: www.declanorourke.com
